Is this serious? If this is some sort of technology that I don't know about please fill me in. The lens isn't even attached?

It would work. The lens doesn't need to be attached for it to transmit light... but there would be lots of light leakage. Reflections off of the metal mounts would create all kinds of mess on the exposed image. Usually a setup like that would have a sort of bellows on it to block out leaked light.

If I understand correctly, bellows in modern day photography is usually used for some sort of macro setup.

I dunno... Macro, Tilt-Shift... Certainly not your average enthusiast. Someone who needs a lot of control of their optics.
