Getting the camera you need or more than you need?

I'm going to use Nikon as an example.

Nikon D90 - What I want-need. Ok, I'm sure it's still more camera than I really need.

Nikon D600 - More than what I need. It's the newest.

Consider that I do keep a camera for a long time. My current camera is a Nikon D50. So I consider it to be an investment for the long run.

The question comes down to is it "better" to get what's current, vs what's already 3 years old?

I know there is a price difference, but that goes with being new vs. old. In no way am I saying the D90 is lesser of a camera or not good.

Like cars, if there is going to be a new MDX next year 2014 , than it make sense to buy the 2014, even thou the 2013 is a very good car by itself. The 2014 will seem "less old," in the future compare to the 2013 even thou they are only one year apart.

I hope this example make sense on the question I'm asking.

If I were doing it over again and for myself, my current camera was handed to me as a gift. I'd get the most camera that I could afford. If I were in your shoes...the D600 for sure, provided I could swing it.

After reading what you want, have and drool over. Get a D7000...

My son has D50, my has D90 and I added a D7000 to my bag just about one year ago. I use it A LOT ! 80% percent of the time.
