Focal length comparison: 10mm - 200mm

Never having tried the 10-22 lens I had no idea how much wider 10mm is than 17mm on my 17-85. I'm rethinking my idea of selling my 17-85 and picking up the 24-105L. I think I need to pick up a 10-22 before I do that.

That's a really nice demo man, although, I'm wondering about it.. how physically close were you to the sign that says "Digital Necessities"? I'm looking at the 24mm shot you have and if I was standing a reasonable distance from that sign, I know I would be able to get a much wider shot at 24mm than the 24mm in the pic.

ps. do you work at a camera store?

That is a nice comparison. I think until you try the 10-22, it's hard to appreciate how wide the 10mm is. On a crop body, it's a very nice lens to have. For me, the 24mm wide end on the 24-105 is just an awkward focal length. Kind of a tweener length. IMO, that lens was, and is, designed and is better on a camera like the FF 5D, of a 35mm film body. The 17-85/10-22 or 17-55/10-22 is about an ideal combo for 1.6 crop cameras.

^^Just to add, the 10-22, more than any other lens I've tried on the 20D, opens up a whole new world of photography and is a lot of fun to use. You just can't get that look to your photos with longer lenses.

also I would guess the distortion at 10mm on a FF would be pretty much ridiculous.

Sorry, I'd like to take credit for that little demo shot, but I stole it from a photography forum I'm on. So no I don't work in a camera store.

Dan posted it awhile back, I just bookmarked it.

If you're thinking about a 10-22mm, get it. I have one but haven't used it that often. But I love it. Take a look at wndrlst's flickr page for her BVI, she took a lot with a 10-22mm.

I'm planning a trip back to Yellowstone and Grand Teton sometime this fall or maybe spring. That lens would be great for those landscapes.

Although it's easy to get caught up in grandeur and overdo the sweeping vista shots. Often times, the more impressive landscape shots are those that isolate a particular feature or portion of the scene.

the 10-22 is my favorite lens right now.

The viewing angle is 107 degrees. That's insane. You can stand in a corner of a room, and take a picture of the ENTIRE room. You can walk right up to someone, take their picture, and they won't even realize you are taking a picture of them. It's great fun.

and they

Your 5D? But it's FF, baby...IWHI. I do hope they give the 6D a faster frame-rate.

Well yeah, duh. But seriously, isn't that largely lens-dependent? I have read that the 5D has some problems with vignetting, but didn't get the impression it was very severe. Do you have to correct everything you shoot in PP, b/c I haven't really noticed a problem with your photos?

I dunno - I think its pretty noticeable. Especially noticed it with the NYC pics. I don't usually correct vignetting but I did on a few of those. You can see severe vignetting on the 1st HDR. Maybe its just this lens.

I did this a couple years back when I picked up the 10-22mm and the 100-400mm Canon lenses. All from the same spot on a tripod.

10mm

22mm

100mm

200mm

300mm

400mm
