Does anyone use flickr.com. I signed up but haven't really used it even though I take quite a few pictures.

What's the main advantage over just storing them on your computer?

There are lots of us on flickr: https://acurazine.com/forums/cameras-photography-44/list-your-flickr-photo-hosting-site-so-we-can-have-look-330119/

It's not an either/or scenario, the site just lets you share your photos with others. You still want a copy of the photos on your computer, but the online version could be used as a backup in the event of an extreme failure of your other backup methods.

The main advantages, as I see them, are 1) sharing your photos with others for feedback and/or exposure, depending on your goals; and 2) it's an easy way to view others' photos, and sometimes techniques, for inspiration and education.

Do you have the option of NOT sharing you photos with others?

You can share with nobody, just family, or friends and family. I believe you can also make a temporary pass to your photos that expires after some time. You give people a URL to access your photos and they're viewable until the pass expires.

OK! Sounds cool and complicated. but I assume they make it simple for dumb asses like me. From what I read the problem for me will be sifting through the complicated to find the simple. Sounds like it could be useful though even though I'm a rank amateur.

I should find out if any one I know is using it. There's a bright idea. And if not, invite them. Ok. I'm getting it. Thanks.

It really isn't complicated at all. Flickr is a great site for hosting your photos, and the explore feature alone makes it worth while. You can find a lot of great stuff from all over the world. Just jump in with both feet. If you have questions, there's plenty of Flickr-ites here to answer your questions.

The only thing that keeps me way from services like flickr is the thought that one day they can make a change to their TOS to say that anything you uploaded to their servers is now their IP and that by using their service, you allow them to use/resell the pics you upload however they want.

Any tips for having the images on Flickr (JPG) look even remotely like I make them look in Lightroom? I work on them as RAW, and export as 100% quality JPG (and Tiff), but when I upload them they seem to lose allot of the manipulation effect. Colors seem flatter, less dynamic range than in the version I work on in Lightroom.

Any ideas?

^^I haven't noticed that. Maybe it has something to do with Lightroom settings?

I would guess its the color profile issue... Lightroom should be set to sRGB. Forgot where you do it OTOH :<

Yeah, I probably just suck at PP. I guess the conversion to JPG doesn't help either.

stogie, are you saving (exporting) them with Adobe's ICC Profile colors? ...i ALWAYS uncheck that option and they turn out as they look in photoshop (otherwise the colors are off after saving as JPEG from RAW)...

I haven't started doing PP in photoshop yet, just LR. Is that in LR too? I think I chose sRGB?

i haven't used lightroom or anything...but figured two adobe graphics programs must be similar...i'm sure somewhere it has the option to export using adobe's color profile...check that out and see if it makes a difference...

You want to export as sRGB for the web.

Cool, I think I am exporting as sRGB. Maybe it is a monitor issue with my laptop not being the same as my desktop.

whoa - flickr has really nice Account Stats!! I just found out about em.... Top 10 lists showing most viewed pics by varying criteria, referring sites, etc. with option ("All Photos and Videos") to see these stats for *ALL* of your pics and videos.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/username/stats/

change username to your username

Pro accounts only. (which is why I didn't notice it before).

is it new or something? I just clicked Account Stats and it came up.. it's probably because I've only had my pro acct for like, a month.

Did DCist ask for permission?

The boot fettish site having your pic is pretty freaky. You don't have fun res pics available, do you?

I posted it in the DCist group on flickr, which grants them permission, so that's all good.

The other thing - yes, I have full res uploaded, but the permissions are set such that only friends and family should have access to them.

Time to take the ex off the friends and family permissions

Edit : And I didn't know you could set permissions for sizes, just on and off. I need to look into this. Thanks.

Yes, I'm sure - I have it set such that contacts marked as friends or family are the only ones with access to the full res versions.

Under the option "Who can download your stuff?" Only the people you grant access to do so can view it larger than the medium size. Otherwise, of course, they could right click/save as and have it. So the magnifying glass option over the photo just doesn't appear when you have it restricted.

IIRC (and I think I do) - isn't this the second (confirmed) time your boot picture has fancied the amusement of some odd fetish type of site? I just tried finding the post but I can't.. some dude linked your boot pic in this really creepy group full of pics of like, army guys wearing hats and boots and stuf..

It was one of the dudes who marked the pic as a favorite...

Another cool thing, in case you don't know, is that you can hotlink pics that are only viewable by you, and everyone can see them when you do that. It's useful if you want to use flickr for a web-hosting requirement, but don't want the picture to have public access on flickr. Yet, everyone can see your hotlinked pic.
