First DSLR...

So i took another impulse buy and picked up a Canon EOS 30d with a 28-135mm Canon lens. I'm coming from a a sony dsc-t200 point-and-shoot camera.

I know NOTHING about DSLR's AT ALL...So I'll probably be poking around this part of azine for the next few weeks. Still haven't decided if I'm going to keep it yet or not. It just really depends on how fast I learn to use the camera to its full potential.

Any recommendations as to where to start? And whats this camera going for as far as street price? I know retail was like $1500.

1. Buy & read "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.
2. Get out and practice. It's the only way to really learn it.

Everyone and their grandma has DSLR these days. Read the manual (!), play around with it, shoot, shoot, shoot, and have fun. If, in the end, you find it's more than you need or want, go back to using a really great P&S --- there's nothing wrong with 'em -- it just all depends on what your needs and desires are in terms of your photos, and photography as a hobby.

Different people have different priorities when it comes to taking pictures: Some like ease of use, portability, quick and easy, versatility, specific functions, budgets they want to stick to, etc, etc, etc....... That's up to you to decide. But I'd definitely try it out for a little bit to see if it's for you....You may come to really enjoy it!

I started toying around with a Canon Digital Rebel XT as my first DSLR. Was absolutely amazed at the possibilities with it, and spent hours upon hours just sitting outside, and taking pictures. (Until I realized how much Nikon's better)

Anyhoo, best experience is your own. Definitely read Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure.
