Decisions.. Decisions.. L series lens VS 5D MK1
I currently have a Rebel XT with a couple of lenses. I've out grown my DSLR for a while now. However, I've accepted it and delt with the issues and have invested my money towards lens.
Now the thing to understand is that I'm not a professional photographer, and photography isnt my biggest hobby, so I dont invest all my money into it.
I've been saving money for the 24-70mm 2.8 L lens. Great lens. I've always wanted a FF DSLR as well but they are pricey. So I figured my next camera will be a 50D. Well.. looking around for fun I realized the 5D MK1 DSLRs are alot cheaper than I had thought. With some hagling it could be bought for 1,000 bucks or so.
So now, I cant decide whether to go with the 5D or the L series lens. What do you guys think?
Something to mention is this: I have the 50mm 1.4 and I love it. However, on the Rebel it's not wide enough. So I've had it for sale for the past couple of days, aiming to sell it and get a wider prime. But if I get the 5D, that issue would cease to exist and I could keep the lens. But it does mean that I cant get the L series.

How do you mean out grown? What about it does it not let you do?
While you have the money get the glass, bodies come and go but glass is always there.

Well, I bought the XT when I was 16. I'm 20 now. I have bulky hands. The XT is too small and uncomfortable. Plus I dont like how it weighs so little. As far as actual Camera limitations, the biggest issue I have is focusing. Long story short, I cant manually focus due to my eyes. Thus I heavily depend on the camera to do it for me. The XT has a very bad focusing system as far as the focus points go. I've had many situations where where I cant get it to focus on what I want it to. I prefer the diamond shape over the +. I think canon realized what a shitty system it is. They switched to the diamond style the gen after. I could use ISO 3200. And FF would be a BIG plus. It would save me from some trouble with selling lenses, and buying new ones.
I mean, I know overall there isnt much of a difference, and it wont change my pics night and day. But I suppose I'm just looking for a change, needing something new. And actually, I talked to this guy I know who is a professional photographer, and he thinks if I want to upgrade to FF that it would be better to just go with a 1Ds MK2 rather than a 5D MK1. They cost about the same, and the 1DsMK2 is better.
To be honest, I think the switch to a 1Ds MK2 or a 5D MK1 would probably be the only switch for me for the next 5 years. Unless I drop the camera and it breaks or something bizarre like that. Especially the 1Ds MK2. It has a 42 point focus system which is most helpful. And although newer cameras have higher MP and do videos, I dont need either. I know the XT has been fine so far, except for the few things I mentioned.
I guess what it comes down to is, should I get a FF body first or a L series. Eventually I'll be getting both. One now, the other next year.
I can tell you I'm not an IS person. I think it's a waste of money, and unecessary. A lot of people are guessing in the next couple of years Canon will probably release an Is version of the 24-70. Which means I could save a few bucks as the lens drops in value.

I think the bigger question is, what glass do you have now? If you already have a good list of quality glass, I'd upgrade the body. Otherwise, get better glass.

Equipment is listed in the other thread, has entry level zoom and a 50mm 1.8.
I say go with glass, and if you want to go full frame sometime, stop buying EF-S lenses.

I dont know the street price for a 5D MK1 now but have you considered a current generation camera like the 7D? I know its not full-frame but I am just curious whether you considered it. The 7D's SOOC range steamrolls over the 5D MK1's - due to current generation processing advancements and technology. If you must get full-frame within a certain price range then I can understand your wanting either of those cameras but I just have to put my 2 cents about the current generation of cameras and their benefits over the older ones.

I decided to skip out on FF. My final decision is actually nothing I had expected. I love my XT. It's in perfect condition. I bought it brand new. Less than 5k actuations. The list goes on. It does have a few things that bother me, but oh well. I did order a battery extender for 28 bucks, and I'm going to try it out, to see if I like it. If I do then great, if not then I can take it off. If I like it and it breaks because its 28 bucks then I'll know it's going to be worth while to buy a decent one.
Anywho, I decided to continue with the challenge of the XT, and am in the market for a 17-40mm 4 L. I'm going to keep my 50mm 1.4 . I've been pretty happy with my lens combination (50mm 1.4 & 17-35mm 2.0-4.0). An upgrade on my zoom would be interesting. The only thing that bothers me is that I cant sell the sigma zoom. I originally got it for free because it has a focus ring issue. Any buyer who finds out about it will just say no, or demand it for 50 bucks tops.

From what I've read, the 17-40L f/4 is less than spectacular on crop.
