Considering the Tamron AF 18-270mm

Anyone have any experience with it? I just picked up a Canon T1i. I have tested the Cannon L lenses & Regular Lenses, & I can tell the difference between the Tamron & the Cannon L Lenses... The Regular lenses though, not so much. I just cant seem to find a better bang for the buck. So here is my question to you photog heads. Any advice, PROS-CONS before I spend $500(after rebate) on this lens?

I have handled that lens but have not used it extensively. I don't have it myself, but my inlaws do...

In short I am not a fan of that lens. It feels a little wobbly when zoomed right out - which may equate to distortion. The few shots I took seemed soft. Also focus is slowish and noisy - people say the noise doesn't bother them and it didn't for me on my 17-50 at first, but later it started to bother me. It makes candids tough to capture when people turn their heads to see what that grinding noise is coming from your lens.

I own 2 Tamron lenses (17-50 and 11-18) I am relatively happy with them but am really coveting an L.

All that being said... Getting that range of zoom with one lens and for that price it may be a good starting point. Don't think though that it will be your last lens...

Super zooms usually have a down side, that could be distortion on the lowside or softness on the longside. I don't believe anybody here has this lens, I would suggest going to amazon.com and B&H photo.com and read the customers comments.

In my opinion the best bang for the buck zoom lens is the canon 70-200 F4L. Doesn't have the wider angle stuff but it's an awesome lens.

For an additional $200 I'd get the Sigma 579101 Zoom Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO HSM Macro for $694.

An inexpensive Canon 6473A003 Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Autofocus Lens for $162

Zoom Super Wide Angle SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens for $359

I wouldn't stick to just one lens for everything, but get one or two that work really good. May cost a little more, but you'll be happier with the pics. I was on a budget so I got a used Tamron AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for my walk around lens. Then use the 18-55 kit lens as my wide angle, and a 70-300 III as my zoom and a 50mm 1.8. I probably have under $500 in those three and they take good pics. Of course I'd love to have 3 L lenses, but since I'm not getting paid and I can touch up the photos a bit in CS4 I have to stay on the lower end with this hobbie.

I had the 18-200 makes a great travel lens when you only want one lens.

In all reality you never want one lens. I leave my 17-55mm 2.8 on my d300
but i hate myself for not having my 50mm 1.4 in low light
and my 70-200 vr 2.8 for bird shots or far shots.

yeah, I gave up my canon 18-200 in favor of a tamron 17-50 (which i've since upgraded to a canon 17-55) and canon 70-300 IS. in most cases, i can fill the gap between the two with my feet

GOOD POINT about the 2 feet thing. I think you guys are spot on about this not being the last lens I will own, but after reading some reviews I think I will start with this lens. Range is great for my vacation I ill be taking in december.

Im sure I could photoshop the clarity & sharpness on a few select images anyway.

Don't get me wrong the 18-200 was quite a compromise of a lens. 7x zoom factor, and the fact that it was all in one lens makes traveling or light shooting quite easy.

You'll have fun with it but just don't get caught playing with the more expensive lens cuz after that you might not go back =)

18-200 is 11x zoom.

I think superzooms are the great. When I went to Taiwan for a month, I only brought my Sigma 18-200 OS. It has limitations, like low light shooting, that you have to keep firmly in mind.

whooops haha I was thinking the old 18-135 dang haha...
i'm sure vr/is does help here and there as well.

I know i used mine quite a bit but picked up a 17-55mm 2.8 nikon so the 18-200 was obsolete with my 70-200 vr 2.8

only thing is i have to lug both of them and switch them out haha...
