National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore shoots in some of the most exotic locales on earth, but often in wretched conditions for weeks on end, and always under pressure to produce pictures worthy of publication in a legendary magazine.
A devoted husband and father of three, he often wonders if it’s the best job in the world, or the worst.
At Close Range with National Geographic provides a rare glimpse of the havoc a tough, dangerous job can create for one’s personal life, especially for someone like Joel Sartore.

It was good although Joel repeatedly asked his assistant and wife if they thought he liked his job. He seemed pretty unhappy untill he would develop his rolls and look at his pictures.
Personally, I thought almost all of his images were great; however, a lot of them get thrown out by the editors of National Geographic. My dream job for about 4 years has been to work as a photographer for NG, but after that special, I really have to rethink it. I even remember him saying that he always gets emails from people saying they want to be a photographer for NG, and he said something along the lines of who would want this job besides a type a personallity. It was also pretty obvious that his family kind of had mixed feelings about his job.
Overall, it was very interesting to get his perspective of actually working for NG. I really had no idea it would be the way he described it.

When I was in the 8th grade, they made us come up with a career choice. I had no clue what I wanted to do. So I wrote down Playboy Photographer. All of the girls were like "OH" and the guys were 'high fiveing".
The show "At Close Range" was really good. To get inside Joel's head, I won't say because of those who haven't see the program.
