just noticed on the picture for the 60D grip.
it looks like you insert the batteries on the side, like in a cartridge, much like the rebel series or the nikon D300/D700 grip.
maybe it might take the 1DmkIII/IV batteries as well.
if so thats nice, never liked the way its set up on the 10-50D and 5D/7D

Anyway, considering the starting launch price is $1100 for the 60D (versus $1400 for the 50D), that should pretty much kill any thoughts that the 60D is a successor to the 50D. That belongs to the 7D. (Although when DSLRs first came out prices dropped like a rock - the D30 was $3000, and the D60 was $2200)
I recall when the 7D came out there were thoughts that there wouldn't even be a 60D at all.
Why is this a fail? I wouldn't use it often, but anytime I'm using live view it would be quite nice.
I'm primarily using live view for either video, or shooting at a weird angle (above my head).
I guess it should make the camera thicker.
It's nice that they are (kinda) standardizing on a battery - the 60d/7D/5D all use the same battery now.

They always used the same battery. BP511A.
It wasn't until they released a new one with the 5DmkII that they had a difference.

It's another moving part to break, especially if it drops. Not to mention the body is now plastic...So you have this swinging plastic piece now. Dirt etc can also get trapped between the screen and the body. It's not a feature I see myself using. This is just one reason why the 60D is fail to me. Or actually, it's win if I consider the 60D "super rebel" has nothing on the 7D...So my 7D won't drop in price anytime soon.

This is great news for me. I've been wanting to upgrade from my 350D for a while now but couldn't justify the cost of the 7D.
The plastic body and old AF system are a bit disappointing, but I have plastic now and worse AF (I primarily use center locked AF anyway). The size seems perfect, and it has the top LCD and the 2nd scroll wheel, stuff missing on the Rebel that kept me from upgrading to the 550D. The articulating screen is cool too. I had that on my G2 9 years ago and loved it.
It's definitely more disappointing to all you 50D and 7D owners, but this is all win for me!

The 60D was a little surprising, but I'm sure it will sell well. It's a moderate step up from a Rebel and I'm sure that's who their audience is. The 7D is the natural upgrade path from the 50D.
We have a G11 with an articulating screen and I love it. I use liveview with my camera on a tripod to check for critical focus, and quite often the camera isn't placed in a good location where I can easily look at the screen. This would be a help, and I especially think it would be useful for video.
I was hoping for a long overdue upgrade to the 24-70, but after seeing the prices of these new lenses, I'm a little scared to think of what it's going to sell for.
I've been managing fine with manual focus, but I think I need something with AF for event coverage. The 24-105 is probably going to end up in my bag if something new doesn't come out in that range.

In retrospect, I guess it all makes sense now.
Well, you are getting the 50D's autofocus, which is a nice bump up from the T2i's.
You are getting all cross autofocus sensors now, versus just the center point.

It's only 720p

fine by me, I wouldn't want 1080 in a small cam like that, I think its a bit overkill. Of course they'll probably be doing that in a few years heh.

But that the excuse that people used with Nikon only doing 720p...

for DSLR's, yes. I would want 1080p. :troutslap

wow I am so into the G12. 3 dials on top, a thumbdial, dial on the back, AND a dial around the lens, a la S90. 6 dials!

Pics of the bg-e9 grip battery cartridge for the 60D
Hopefully that shows up.
Anyways I prefer this over the 10-50D and 5D/7D grip.

Canon will now add locking mode dial to your EOS 5D Mark II or 7D... for $100
BY DARREN MURPH
POSTEDDEC 2ND 2010 02:09AM
Oh, sure -- Pentax may have thrown one in gratis on its K-7, and Nikon has done the same on its D3S, but none of that really matters if you're the proud owner of a Canon, now does it? For those fed up with accidentally moving their mode dial during a critical shoot, Canon is now offering a chargeable service for the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D cameras. For the tidy sum of $100, the outfit will install a Mode Dial with a center-located lock button -- the goal here is to prevent the wheel from moving during "normal camera operation," while simultaneously milking an extra Benjamin out of the outfit's loyal customer base. 'Course, there's a glass half-full / half-empty way to look at this. You could bang on Canon for not including this from day one, or you could be grateful to have the option at all. Your move, cynic.

saw that, I think its a ripoff. I'll save my $100 and be careful with the switch.

oh yeah me too, esp when haha. oh well, i call it 'art' factor.

I can't follow that story, because the D3s doesn't have a mode dial. And Nikon's have a lock for their shooting style dial.

I notice a lot of people wondering how it can happen. And you know, I was thinking about it myself the other day. I can't put my finger on it but I know it happens. I think sometimes I inadvertently fidgit with the camera (??) esp while under the 'influence' I think thats one possible scenario. And then sometimes I accidentally brush the dial against my body or something when walking amongst the crowd, that's all I can think of. Actually it happens often enough that I'll check the dial before taking most shots.
