Canon lens question

I've read pretty ho-hum reviews of the base lens that comes with the RebelXT. A couple of websites are offering a package that pairs the XT with a 28-200 f/3.5-6.3, rather than the 28-80. I tend to shoot in the wider angle ranges (will be purchasing a 10-22 ASAP), so am not as interested in the zoom as I am curious to know if the general quality of the lens is better or worse. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? It's only an extra $100, but if I'm better off just going with the base lens, that's what I'll do.

Thanks for any input!

The kit lens (18-55mm) is actually pretty sharp and it covers a good focal range for a walk-around lens. I have many samples that I've shot with it if you'd like to see some.
Here are a couple shots from the 2004 Detroit Auto Show:

I wouldn't pick either the 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 or the 28-200 f/3.5-6.3. The 28-80 is one of canon's worst lenses and the 200 f/6.3 far too slow unless you only plan on using it in bright daylight.

I would shoot with the kit lens until you get comfortable with your camera. It's only $100 so it won't break the bank. If you're going to get the 10-22, grab a tamron 28-75 f/2.8 at the same time. Sell your kit lens if you have to, but I think you'll find it's a handy focal length to have around.

I don't have the lens, but I have to say, looking at the 6MP shot of the Porsche, it looks pretty good. Especially if that shot is straight out of camera. I'm not sure you need a workable shot to be much sharper than that. Contrast and color look pretty good too.

ISO used and focal length would be helpful.

^ those shots are JPGs straight out of the camera. Full auto everything as well...

The exif should still be attached to the original sized images.
