Canon G7 vs G9
I've been interested in Canon's G7 camera, and moreso the G9 ever since it was released.
I was dead set upon getting the G9, but, recently, I've seen the G7 on sale as a clearance item.
This got me thinking -- the main advantages of the G9, although nice, I believe, are made up for with the money saved with buying the G7, in my case.
The main advantages, so far as I was aware, were that it had a larger screen (3" vs the G7's 2.5"), the ability to shoot RAW format, and, more megapixels (12.1 vs the G7's 10.4).
This is going to really be my first real camera -- and although I like taking pictures, I probably won't be using ALL the features to make the picture turn out JUST right. I would rarely if ever use RAW.
Right now, the G7 is for sale for $399 CDN on clearance, and the G9 is regularly priced at $599.
For a $200 price difference, I see that I pay for the megapixels, and the larger screen -- which, to me, isn't worth it. I've heard that the picture quality is better on the G9, but not outrageously so.
What is AZ's opinion?? Should I buy the G7 and save the $200, or, wait for the G9 to come down in price (although I'm pretty sure that it won't come down as substantially as the G7 has).

I played with a G9 while I was in Montreal last week and I really liked it. All of the G-series have been good cameras, but I think I was most impressed with the G9. My only gripe is I wish it had a more wide angle lens.
Have you considered the S5 IS? It should also be on your shopping list if you're looking for a high-end compact camera.
You should also look at buying from www.bhphotovideo.com instead of the Canadian retailers. The G9 is listed on their site for $436 and the S5 is going for $349.

Let me add that you can get a wide angle conversion lens for the G9 as well as the S5.

It's quite a bit bigger than the SD cameras, but not obnoxious. More chunky than anything. It's definitely got something to hold onto. I'd say it's very portable, just not SD portable.

I love my G9. You can fit it into your (big) pant pocket.
Like all electronics, you can always wait for the next model (G11?) for the G9's price to drop. But then you will always be waiting.

Hey, everyone,
Thanks for the quick replies!
One of my friends who works at one of the Canadian electronics retailers (Futureshop) told me that if I wait until around Christmas time, I may see a $100 drop in the G9 price, to compete with the US market -- so I guess I'll be playing the waiting game for the G9, as F-C suggested!
The reason I'm not considering the S5IS is because when I was busy sizing up what I wanted to buy, I wanted good quality, features, and still a smaller form factor -- which the G-series fit. I would consider the S5 more were I taking the camera out for dedicated photography and shooting in its own bag.
I've also heard that the wide angle lens conversion kit was something rediculous like $500 or something! That may have been a gross exaggeration, though. as I haven't actually looked up the price myself.
Thanks again!
