So the 17-85mm 4-5.6 IS USM is being replaced by the 15-85mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM ?
does that mean the 17-55 2.8 IS USM will eventually become a 15-55 2.8 IS USM ??

Maybe Dan uses single shot mode precisely because the servo mode is inconsistent. I don't know. And shooting cars is different. Motocross tracks typically have cluttered backgrounds with lots of trees, spectators, etc.
Nothing more frustrating than framing James "Bubba" Stewart perfectly in the shot, but with him OOF while the BG is tack sharp.

Since Ontario doesn't have big mountains, most of the courses run through heavily forested areas with the odd rock garden thrown in for good measure. Almost all of the action happens under the dark canopy of the forest, where ambient exposures are around 1/80s and f/4 @ ISO800. Needless to say, there's not a lot of light for the AF system to use, but the 50D's AI Servo really surprised me. I might shoot 300 to 400 frames in a race weekend and at most, I might have 5 or 6 frames that are out of focus because the camera couldn't keep up. It's simply not a problem. I have more bad frames due to movement (either me or the riders) but I can't fault the camera for that.
I almost exclusively shoot with off camera flashes when I'm in the woods, which means I'm using single shot drive because the strobes wouldn't be able to keep up with a high speed burst. I usually drop the ambient by a couple stops and use the flash as the main light source. This lets me shoot at f/5.6 to f/8 (for depth of field) @ ISO 400 and use the flash to freeze the motion. This combination yields very sharp images that I regularly sell as 16x20's or 13x19's. Almost everyone who has bought one of my prints has come back to order a second or third from a subsequent race, so I must be doing something right.
As Jupe alluded to, I recently had a few images published in the Ontario Cycling Association magazine from these races. I've had some good feedback from companies that get the magazine and may be shooting some promotional materials for them next season.
All that being said, I think my particular experience with the camera is just that, my own experience. Even though it thoroughly meets my needs I'm sure there are different conditions where it would fall down. Before this year, the only sporting events I've covered was the ALMS series. I'm mostly a still life/fine art kind of guy, and from that regard, there are a number of things that I would tweak in future versions of this camera.
My wish list:
1) I don't need anything above ISO 1600, but i would like everything below it to be as clean as possible. In fact, ISO 50 or even lower would be a big help.
2) Increased dynamic range. I recently got a chance to play with a coworker's D3x and I was blown away by the dynamic range. I almost always bracket my exposures outdoors but I don't think I would as much if I had the range of the D3x.
3) Faster sync speeds. I'd probably have to upgrade my skyports, but I would love to shoot at 1/500 or higher with a flash.
4) Fast live view AF. While I use live view quite a bit, I don't bother if it's not on a tripod because the AF is just too slow. Even the quick AF mode where it flips up the mirror to use the normal AF sensors is pretty flaky.
5) Tilting 3" screen, with the same 921k dot resolution.
Other than that, everything else is gravy. The 7D rumors look good so far, but there's not a lot compelling me to upgrade. The video mode would be nice for capturing the family, but I might just go with a dedicated video camera instead.

Awesome shots, Dan. Does the flash ever distract the riders or are they used to it/too focused to notice? Are you still using flashes or did you get strobes? At less than full power (especially at 1/4 or less) you should be able to do at least a couple of consecutive frames in burst mode, no?
And that 100mm 2.5 IS macro looks awesome.

I use a 580EX2 and 430EX for most of these shots. While I'd love to own a set of studio strobes, it would just be too much weight to haul up and down the mountain. Just the batteries are 30 pounds each...
I asked the riders if the flash bothered them and they've all said they never noticed them. They are pretty focused on the line ahead of them, not what's going on over on the sidelines.
I can get a couple flashes in a row without needing a deep recharge, but not enough to warrant high speed drive. I often set up at the trickiest part of the track because it's often the most interesting, but there also tend to be a lot of crashes there. When a rider goes down, I often have the one shot from when they were on their bike but I'll fire another frame when I see them mid air. The flashes are usually down for 10 seconds after the two shots.

Snap Crackle and Pop are going to war with the Keebler Elves. Elves come out of nowhere and ambush the three. Crackle and Pop are sitting in the Clam mourning the loss of Snap and say that the elves just came out of the trees.

And Dan, thanks for the explanation. I simply have not had that much luck with servo mode with the 40D. Whether that's because the gear is lacking or my technique is, I don't know. But I don't trust it.

Okay, well here is an interesting rumor from canonrumors.com:
I was sent an email saying that the new 7D will be APS-C, but with a 1.45x crop factor. Apparently this is the limit so that EF-S lenses still work without vignetting.
That would be pretty cool - the 10-22mm shooting at 14.5mm equivalent! Canon has a 14mm lens but it's what, $2K?
