canon 30D for a n00b
hey folks, im trying to get away from point and shoot for thesimple fact that they pretty much suck. not only that but i want to learn how to take good pics.
my friend has a canon 30D with lense that he can sell me for $400. its in like new condition as it was a back up camera for him, he's a photographer. im going to get more details tonight but what is the general concesus on this model? seems like a good deal for me looking at prices on the web.

Good price and good camera. Lens is probably the 18-55, which isn't a bad lens to start with.
And let me suggest http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-...4133599&sr=8-1

updates....
"I'm most likely sell it with a 28-135mm Canon with Image stabilization. "
so thats the lens that would come with it. what does that mean to me?
and the rest that i already somewhat understand
8.2 mega pixel
1.6x cmos sensor
ISO ranging from 100-1600
the body is metal, not plastic
this was an intro to the semi-pro series

It's a decent lens to start with. Gives you range as a starter that you won't need another lens right away, until you figure out what you like taking pictures of.
The IS, helps with the shakes that some have when taking pictures.
If that is the offer body and lens for $400, good price.

Yes, if you really get into it, it could be a money pit. You could want a wider lens for the car pictures and a better lens for taking pictures of the kid. But it will be better than a p&s, especially as the kid gets older.

Don't expect video from Dslr to be like a p&s. If you want to video kid, I suggest getting a video camera.

Well the D5000 has a great image. I know many that own higher end Nikon's and are very surprised and pleased with the images of the D5000.

you know you are talking about a camera from 2006 vs a camera from 2009?

all work and no play
which book are you referring to? Getting used to a DSLR can be slightly maddening at first. I put mine back in the box and put it away for almost two years on my first attempt. But reading a few of the books helped make it click the second time around
