14-bit A/D and ISO 6400

I heard rumors about the live view and I thought they were just making that up, apparently it's for real!

10 fps at 10 meg/pic? Whoa. Fill your 1 Gig CF card in less than 8 seconds.

I wonder when Canon is going to replace the 5D.

Live View...... Weird.

I can't imagine holding that monster at a distance and then framing with the
LCD. I think my arms would fall off.

Focusing is manual Only with live view, similar to the 20Da. No surprise there.

If anyone wonders why this was pretty predictable, it's because for SLRS, when you shoot, the image bounces off the mirror, onto special autofocus sensors. SLRS do NOT use the regular CCD to focus, which is why the focus faster & more accurately than non SLRS.

In order to have live view, you must lift the mirror so the sensor sees the image.
With the mirror raised, you block the normal autofocus sensor.

You don't have to worry about holding it while looking at the LCD, because the Live View can be used wirelessly! You can do remote previewing and capture from a laptop with WiFi and Canon's wireless transmitter.

That has to be great for sports shooters who hide their cameras all over the arena and trigger them with pocket wizards.

I'm only on page 11 of the white paper and I'm ready to sign the check.

- ISO 3200 just as usable as ISO 1600 on the 1D mark IIn, and low iso shots have 50% less shadow noise.
- AF points can be tweaked in software so front-focus and back-focus issues are a thing of the past.
- Pixels shrunk, but they managed to keep the photodiodes the same size thanks to innovations in microlenses.

that's nutty. and as you said, the light efficiency is nutty too..

Although the pixel size of the 1D Mark III is 1 micron smaller than the pixel size of the EOS-1D Mark II and Mark II N, the photodiode size of both sensors is the same, thanks to the optimized photodiode construction and more sophisticated processing of the 1D Mark III. By optimizing the gap between the on-chip microlenses and improving the fill factor (photodiode area divided by total pixel size) of each pixel, light-gathering efficiency has been improved. Also, by optimizing the photodiode's structure, light-reception efficiency has been improved. Additionally, the second-generation, on-chip noise removal circuit and the noise reduction technology explained below combine to remove noise effectively. This has enabled the EOS-1D Mark III to be the first EOS DSLR camera to have ISO 3200 as part of its standard ISO speed range. Dynamic range at low ISO speeds is about the same with the 1D Mark III as it is with the EOS-1D Mark II and Mark II N despite the 1D Mark III’s increased resolution.
you are considering to get one? are they saying how much it will cost? haven't got through the whole PDF yet..

Oh yea the sRAW is also cool! I mean I could use that in regard to what I was talking about earlier today, how the RAW files are so damn big.

There was a poll done on SportsShooter.com a few months ago and it asked what was the one thing they would not change on the 1Dmk2n. A large majority said they didn't want any more megapixels. They were happy with 4mp on the original 1D, so the 8mp was already overkill for most of their needs.

If I'm reading correctly, with the wireless transmitter, you can record pictures wirelessly to an external USB hard drive - or any other USB memory device... very cool!

Camera porn like this only comes out every 3 or 4 years though, so it's ok.

the 1D series is intended for speed, not MP.

If Megapixels gets you off, wait for the next 1Ds. I believe the rumor for
the next one is 22 MP. (current one is 16.7)

Ok, I'm done my first read of the PDF.

I'm blown away by this camera. Canon obviously listens to the people who buy their cameras because they have fixed just about every annoyance and developed a ton of new features for this model.

Here are some other neat little things that caught my eye in the later half of the PDF:
- virtual crop lines in remote live preview
- silent shooting mode (amazing for wedding photogs)
- safety shift ISO
- double the battery life, yet the battery is 40% smaller and 46% lighter.
- new Ec-c IV focus screen for less grainy and brighter focusing
- user defined "my menu" that lets you place "bookmarks" to 6 of your most used menu items
-Same price as the 1DmkIIn at launch - $3995!

The 1DmkIIn is an amazing camera, but what boggles my mind is the 1DmkIII has so many improvements that it took a 63-page whitepaper to explain them all!

Check out the dynamic range in this Kayak shot: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eos1dm3/downloads/kayak.jpg

The servers are getting hammered right now, but it's worth the download. The shadow detail and lack of shadow noise is amazing. The amount of highlight detail that's preserved is equally impressive. That's what 14-bits will get you.

So yeah....What a blessing that I'll be needing a DSLR by the end of summer.

Man, that would make a GREAT wedding present!!

Can't wait to see one up-close and try it out. I see a field trip to Henry's in my future!

I have to admit that my favorite part of this announcement is that it doesn't give me any remorse about purchasing my 5D.

Back on topic though --- this camera looks like it'll be a lot of fun to play around with (sadly, I have no actual hope of getting one of this magnitude).

Hmm. Maybe its just the "newness factor" but I am dazzled by this 1D. Of course, I am dazzled by many things lol. I think this camera with the 24-70 2.8 would be ridiculous in the club and other low-light settings. With its light efficiency enhancements, I think it's performance will be better than the 5D's. However, even though I was dazzled by the action freeze-frame samples, the same did not hold true for either of the 2 portrait samples - I have seen better looking portraits from the 5D. The 5D may be better for studio portraits and wedding-type of applications.

Quick question.

New 1D vs Dan. You have 5 seconds to decide.

Silent mode just reduces the volume of the camera from 77db to 70db.

That's cool, but 70db is still pretty loud, I think.
I wonder what the volume of the 20d is.
