Bought a 1d

As I stated in the "what type of camera do you have"

I bought a 1d yesterday. Very nice seller and extremely helpful and honest about the camera. I'm hoping it arrives in a few days.

I went a little premature on my buy, as my Olympus E20n is still up on ebay right now... I hope it goes for a little more money

Anyways, just thought I would share.

Best,

Dustin

I will be the first to tell you I'm every bit an amature that just has a love for still photography.

I guess the time I've spent working in broadcast, I've just become a custom to pro gear.

The 1d is an older camera. The one I bought is circa 2003, but I'm going to have just as much fun with it learning the functions as I will actually out shooting.

---

No, I haven't bought any lens' yet. I've got my eye on the 20-35 F/3.5 and the 70-200 F/4L as well as the base 50 F/1.8 prime as a nice and cheap lens.

Very best

Dustin

My suggestion..you got the body...

Now you're into making you're investment.

Go for the good lenses, with the bigger apertures. It will give more choices...and a greater range to experiement and play.

Its just mo...because it also depends on where you'll be shooting, as to why you'll why such lenses. But my love of faster lenses comes from the film world.

And I do not really use flash...havent made the investment for a good one.

The body was $1,300 and is a year 2003 version.

I agree 100% about the lens selection. Obviously the f/2.8L lenses are what I would love to shoot. But I will be happy to give up a stop for a little less moeny.

The 20-35 F/3.5, I've been told is one of the best bang for the buck wide angle zooms you can buy. Its really a sleeper.

Ditto the 70-200 F/4 --- although, I've got my eye on an older 80-200 F/2.8L

Then, throw in the 50mm F/1.8 and I think I've got a pretty well rounded kit.

Thanks,

Dustin

Does canon make a 50mm 1.4 like Nikon? Go with that one.

And for the telephoto...go with the 2.8...you wont regret it.

I have a 80-200 F/2.8L that's in pretty nice shape.
There's some scuffs on the outside but nothing to get excited about.
I don't use it anymore since I got the 70-200 IS.

Feel free to make me a reasonable offer.

The 50 F/1.4 is finicky. I've found so far that it takes better pictures at F2 and higher. Using this glass at anything less in daylight gives high amounts of CA (as seen in this example @ F1.8). At 1.4 the depth of field is so small that you have to be spot-on to take a good picture. Part of the problem is my inexperience in addition to the small mirror on the 20D. I can't always tell if my subject is in focus. If you happen to get it right, it leaves you with some nice bokeh. The F1.4 has an eight-blade diaphragm.

Thank you very much for all of the lens selection suggestions.

I am at work right now and will get back to a bigger response, and maybe a few PM's for the lenses that the Nudge Nudge, Wink Winks have come from.

very best,
Dustin

The camera came in today.

It is in great condition. Only a few very mild cosmetic issues. This was def. not a news photographer or sports photog camera as it is just too clean and brand new looking.

I went ahead and installed an exif reader on my machine and found the number of shutter clicks the first owner put on. I was hoping for less, but to be honest, I'm not too worried. It has exactly 84,900 shutter clicks on it. I would have loved to see 20,000 or 30,000 or even 2,000, but given that canon has tested the 1d to 150,000 and the recent 1ds MKII to something like 250,000 I'm not really worried.

I'm picking up a 50mm F/1.4 on Saturday to start and I'm going to need a few new batteries as this thing goes through power pretty quickly.

All in all, I'm very happy so far (knocks on wood) it came packaged very well, with all of the original documentation, software, cables, etc, and is in excellent condition.

Best,

Dustin

The photog for this cheerleading thing I work with has 1Ds, and is slowly updraging to Mark IIs. He said he'd let me have one of the older ones for under a grand, I may take him up on it. However, after borrowing a Mark II for a day in San Francisco, I'm really in love with it's low light abilities. 3200 ISO + 24-70 F2.8, and it looks PERFECT, no grain or anything - I was taking photos that I thought weren't possible before, with NO tripod or anything. Amazing...but damn this thing costs a lot haha.

I need to get you a website from him for batteries - they last longer than the Canon model and like 1/4 of the price. He's got something like 10 bodies, each have had two replacement shutters put in. If you get worried about it, its only like $300 for a new one.

I really like the RAW + JPEG mode of the 1D. Lets you store a RAW file for your use later, but you still have a JPEG to show around/email right away. He gets some1gb CF cards from that same site I mentioned for $60 that he swears by too.

Congrats on the purchase We cant wait to see some of the pics with the 1D!

That would be great if you could get me a website where he buys batteries, because I def. need about three more.

I would love a Mark II, but I just couldn't spend the money right now and the 1d seemed like the better alternative -- the file sizes are really nice too.

I've fallen in love with the 1d these past few days. I just cant get over how fast it is. Its big, bulky, heavy, and I love it.

Yes, that 50mm lens is really great. Very fast and tack sharp anywhere over 1.8 on my copy.

The Canon NP-E3 is about $120 from most places. There are two replicas on that site - one $25 and one $65, not sure which one he uses but I can ask him later today. Both are 2200mAh, the Canon is only 1650mAh. They are cheaper and last longer than the Canon models. Win-Win

He swears by the RiDATA cards that site sells to, he's got like 100 of the 1GB 80X cards.

Thanks. I think I'll pick up a few of the 2200mAh batteries and a couple of the RiDATA cards.

I've likewise heard good things about Sandisk cards.

The one nice thing about the 1d is teh file size. The RAW files are only 4.5 mb, so even smaller cards work fine.

Thanks again

Let me check with him on which battery he uses before you order some, I'd hate for you to get one that is crap...I'm at a show with him now, at the next break I may be able to get over there to his side of the stage.

I've heard mixed things about Sandisk, this guy doesn't like them because he lost like 500 pictures on one once. He said he used to use Lexar and they were pretty good but the RiDATA was pretty much the same and much cheaper. I have two 1GB Sandisks that I use in our pro MP3 players that work just fine so idk - his guys abuse them more than either of us would probably. They shoot about 500-750 pictures per cheerleading team - and there are 150 teams at this show = 75000-112500 pictures per day on like 12 cards.

Ya the file sizes are great, but of course you can always back the Mark II down

Hey, sorry it took me so long to get back on this. He said he buys the $25 batteries. He said they don't fit as nice as the real Canon batteries although the one I was playing with fit just fine He said even still, they last longer than the Canon battery and you can buy 5 of those for the price of one Canon.

I have had my 1d since they came out, and i absolutely adore it

I second the idea you go with the 2.8lenses, the 4.0and up ones, just don't have the same versatility IMO.

congrats on the purchase!

Thanks.

It really is a beast.

I'm having a lot of fun with it. I can't even begin to describe how fast it really is.

I was out this past weekend having lunch with some friends. I took the camera because it was a very beautiful day. On our way back to our cars my two friends point out a car coming towards us. It wasn't anything special, just happened to be another friend of ours.

The camera was around my neck in the on position, but off because of the sleep timer.

I so much as grabbed the camera brought it up and hit the shutter as the car went by us at probably 40mph. It woke up, focused, and fired off about 6 frames before I even got the camera to by eye. When I reviewed the images after, each frame was in perfect focus.

It might be old, but it is damn fast.

I still haven't bought a third lens. So I'm just walking around with the USM 28-105 F/3.5 ---- good consumer walk around lens

best,

Dustin

I found the 28-105 USM for like $200 so I bought it. It not a very fast lens, but with the 1.3 crop of the 1d it is wide enough for walking around.

The 70-200F4L will be on order shortly.

Now I just need a nice fast wide.
