Another "Which lens to get" thread

Another one, I'm pretty sure i know what I want since I researched, but want to make a good decision none the less.

Currently:
XTI
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
430ex
Bogen 055xprob + 486rc2

Possibly the Tamron 17-50, pretty damn sharp lens with f/2.8

cant go wrong with the tamron, excellent lens for the money. If you still have the kit lens, you could consider a mid range telephoto or even a 70-200 to compliment the 11-16. Depends on what you need and shoot.

until i move to FF, right now these 3rd party lenses do preform pretty damn good.

i was thinking either getting tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and tokina 50-135mm f/2.8

or

just getting the 28-70mm f/2.8L

i also have to repair my canon 17-85mm

If you plan on moving to FF, stop wasting time and money buying stuff you'll just have to sell. Save up now and buy the lens you know you'll want down the road. It will save you in the long run, save you $$$$.

If you want a 17-50 range, save and get the Canon 17-40mm.

For most lenses, I would agree to save for the one you want. However, after owning the 17-40 then selling it for the 17-55 (Canon), I would suggest getting the Tokina 17-55. Having the extra stop and added 15mm focal length now will worth losing a few dollars on sale/trade later on.

Lippstuh - Realistically, how long do you think it will be before you go full frame? If more than a couple of years, then just get the Tokina. A couple of years ago, I was planning to go full frame in a couple years. I still have the 30D and am content for now.

the 28-70 is kind of an odd FL especially on crop, save up for the brick

I just saved up for my 17-55 2.8 nikon but i plan on keeping this lens for my d300 and going fx in the near future.

By the way 18-200 was a pain to sell since people don't respond and paypal or ebay fees suck even more.

OP. Just a comment on the Tamron 17-50. I have that lens and am happy with it. There is one complaint that may be a killer for some folk. The AF on it is very noisy... Like wake a sleeping baby noisy... Even my 10 year old Rebel G 28-70 kit lens isn't that noisy.

im not going FF until a few years until i gain more experience, probably will get a 40D/50D next year. since i barely started, i don't see the point of owning the "best" camera until my skill level is there. plus i won't lose much money selling my 3rd party lenses, if i do it right, i should cut even.

with that said, i considered the 17-50 f/4L but it doesn't have that extra stop i'm looking for. 17-55 f/2.8 is a superb lens from all the reviews and sample pictures, but the tammy seems to comparable especially since I can get it for $315 new. i'm a bit undecided since i've been wanting an L lens.

so should i save up for the canon 24-70, 28-70, or 17-55.... or do i just go with the tamron.

Not saying anything about the best camera, just glass. If you're going to go forward with this, buy the glass you want one time. It's the same with tripods and ballheads.

Glass is always good, bodies come on go.

If you can wait to save up for the Canon 17-55, then do that. If it will take you a while to save for it, then get the Tamron (I said Tokina for some reason in a previous post).

When buying used, you can usually sell for nearly what you paid. You'll maybe be out PP and shipping costs if you go that route.

Says the guy who buys the best glass, then sells it to switch formats.

Can't use Canon on Nikon, plus I bought the best zooms that are made, plus a pretty nice prime. And pretty soon the best primes made; some Zeiss and Volts.

Your best to save up for it it will work better on a cropped body becasue of the sweet spot on the fx lens. Either way lens value doesnt change much.

if you are on a budget, and since you have a rebel, the 18-55mm IS is a good starter lens that can take good photos. here is a sample of the JUN Evo X from SEMA 2008:

all you need to do is get a lens that fits your shooting need (focal length/range) and just go for it

the only reason its not an L is because the EF-S mount will not work on the 5D and 1D series cameras. Ive seen one person remove the bottom half of the lens to make it fit on a 1D, but I dont think anyone will want to perform surgery on a $900+ lens

typically my shoots are last minute in-between my regular job. but ill try to make it out again to one of your meets
