Air show pics - Andrews AFB

Here's a few shots from the air show this weekend. Heavy overcast all day so not the brightest of shots.

For prop planes, a slightly slower shutter speed will give you a more pleasing blur. It looks good now, but I think it'd look better with the prop completely blurred.

Yea, I wasn't thinking about the prop freeze. My first air show so now I know for next time.

I was using a Canon XSi and the EF 100-400mm lens hand held. After about 6 hours my arms were pretty tired.

Cool show though, just wish the light was better.

Hey kcroberge, I was there on Sunday. I also used an XSi, but with a combo of the EF-S 17-55mm IS USM for ground shots and the EF-S 55-250mm IS for the air shots. I agree the light was challenging, and even with spot metering, getting the shots well exposed with the cloudy skies was challenging. RAW + LR2 = a little better.

Here's a few of mine:

There were great subjects on the ground as well:

I've been waffling on getting that lens for about 4 years now. It seems to be perfect for shooting stuff like air shows and other sports, and the image quality is very good. A sturdy monopod would help with long shoots. I'll be picking CF one up before the summer shooting season. Nice tool to have when using longer lenses.

You have some nice shots there. Airplanes are always an interesting subject.

waTSX - I have a monopod that I use when out in the woods and shooting wildlife. I just didn't want to carry it around all day on the tarmac when I wasn't shooting, and it was a long ride back to my car to put it down. After a while the monopod just becomes more weight to carry in between shots.

Nice pics, I wanted to go real bad, but I had three finals in the next two days so I couldn't make it (worth it, because I did really well on them). I'm going to try to make it next year, because I used to go all the time when I was little and I love all that stuff.

Wow, great pics guys, I was there also on Saturday all day and it was a blast that weekend. It made me appreciate fighter jets even more and what to say about the Thunderbird. Again, great shots.

Awesome shots in here.

kcroberge - really digging the 2nd and 3rd shots. You capture some great images, but I think you could get a lot more out of them with some PP.

einsatz - Love the shot of the little girl with the lolipop (commented on it on flickr a while back)

I've been talking about going to an airshow for the past few years, but still haven't made it. Maybe this year...

Nice pictures. I especially like the T-Birds pics. I'm more of a Navy/Blue Angels guy, but the Air Force puts on a great show too.
