If you can't cough up the coin for a macro, get some extension tubes for your 50 f/1.8. You can get to nearly 1.5:1 with a full set of Kenko tubes and that lens.
Here's a test shot I did just to try it out and I was very impressed with the results from a sub-$100 lens:

I remember reading about these contraptions on here before, just to get this straight, they basically move the lens further away from the body which increases the size of the image on the sensor. I was just looking at them on B+H, I might just get a set for $169 it seems look they could add lots of range to that lens. Hmmm extension tube set or Apple Time Capsule for my Bday

Really all they do is let you focus closer, hence the bigger image. The tubes are just spacers that have electrical contacts so you can retain auto aperture and autofocus.
The downside to using tubes is you sacrifice infinity focus while they're attached, and you'll notice a reduction in light, depending on the amount of extension.

That's 68mm of extension on the 50 f/1.8. It works out to 1.4:1, but on a cropped body, the frame is really closer to 2.25:1.
