40D Firmware Update

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos...irmware-e.html

This firmware update (Version 1.0.8) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

- Fixes a phenomenon in which Image Stabilization operation emits a sound when certain buttons are pressed, with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens attached to the camera.

- Fixes a phenomenon in which the Image Stabilization operation emits a sound from the lens when IS lenses are attached to the camera.

- Fixes a phenomenon in which a part of the image looks unnatural when reviewed on the LCD.

- Corrects errors in the Spanish and Norwegian menu screens.

As with most of these updates, I'm left with mixed feelings as to whether I should install it or not. I haven't noticed the "unnatural" LCD image phenomenon.

I heard some noise coming from my 17-55.. but not sure if I would say the lens "emits" the sound.. it sounded like IS kicking in when I'm not even focusing..

I'll probably do the update this week..

+1 I'm just not sure how much noise the lens is supposed to emit.

hmm thinking about it some more - seeing how the referenced site is a .jp - it might just be the result of translation... I mean, the word "emit".

after re-reading the sentence, it says the "IS operation emits" the sound.. so it's not completely mis-worded

was browing dpreview, here are some comments:

1) some people noticed jaggy lines on their previews that made them think the image was corrupt. They were only seen on the LCD.
2) some people reported hearing their IS lenses make 'IS noises' even when IS was turned off. When IS is active, it makes a soft whirring sound.

I have the 40D and since getting it last Nov, I saw there were 2 firmware updates...the one mentioned above and one that was previous to this.

In order to do any firmware updates, do we need to do the previous ones? Or does the this one 1.0.8 encompass the previous updates? Or does it skip it?

Well, not exactly a 40D update ... but an update for the 30D was posted.

I've had my 30D since March 2007 and I'm sad to say I've taken maybe 1000-1500 shots with it, at most. I've never done any firmware updates. Now that I've reformatted my Macbook (long story), I'm doing the slow process of installing all my apps. The Canon stuff is up and will install my Adobe stuff shortly thereafter.

Should I even bother doing the 1.0.6 firmware update for my 30D? Never had any problems with it.

This is what 1.0.6 adds:

"This firmware update (Version 1.0.6) incorporates the following fixes and improvements:

It allows the latest lens names to be recorded in the Exif information of images taken.

It adds lenses that are compatible with the Digital Photo Professional 3.2 lens aberration correction function."

Kinda curious what the camera-philes think of this. And I am too lazy to read how to determine what firmware version I have ... but I think it's probably 1.0.1 since it was fairly new (to the market) when I bought it.

The upgrade is painless. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone bricking their camera because of a firmware update. If you're on the original firmware, it's probably worthwhile upgrading.

I haven't heard one problem about the 30D upgrade. Though I haven't done it to mine. I just use it for IR and with just one lens.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll just go find a card reader to upload the firmware onto a CF card.

Another update released today.

Details

Firmware update Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.

Fixes a malfunction that in rare occurrence causes a low battery indication to be displayed when using the EF 85mm F1.2L II USM lens. Depending on the battery check timing of the camera, the battery level displayed on the camera's LCD data panel may shows Battery will be exhausted soon or Battery must be recharged, even though the battery capacity is sufficient.

Fixes a malfunction that in rare occurrence causes an Err 06 Self Cleaning Sensor malfunction to appear on the camera's LCD monitor and LCD data panel, even when the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit is operating normally. This message may appear depending on the timing of when the camera is switch to the ON position.

Fixes a malfunction that prevents correct colors from being printed when direct printing. RAW images captured using the camera's custom Picture Styles (Emerald, etc.), which have been downloaded from Canon's Web site and registered under User Def. 2 or User Def. 3.

Modifies the level of subject brightness that causes the AF-assist beam to fire when using an external Speedlite.

Enables an external flash connected to the camera's synchro terminal to fire even when the camera's built-in flash is popped up.

Version 1.1.1 firmware is for EOS 40D cameras with firmware up to Version 1.1.0. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.1.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
