2004 Geneva: All-woman design team pens low-maintenance Volvo - - - - By BRADFORD WERNLE | Automotive News Europe

Volvo's all-woman design team: (from left) Eva-Lisa Andersson, Tatiana Butovtisch Temm, Elna Holmberg, Maria Widell Christiansen and Camilla Palmertz.
A car designed by women for women will be showcased on Volvo's stand at the Geneva auto show.
The YCC is loosely based on the platform Volvo uses for the S40 sedan and V50 station wagon. The core design team consisted of five women.
The YCC has no hood -- its front end is designed to be lifted off in one large piece by a mechanic. That's because the team judged that women never lift the hood for maintenance.
When the car is due for servicing, it transmits a wireless message to a service center, which in turn sends a message to the driver with a reminder.
The owner needs to change the oil only once every 50,000km compared with less than 20,000km for many cars.
Women don't enjoy having to wash cars constantly, so the YCC features paint and glass that repel dirt.
The seat covers are changeable and can be run through a washing machine. The headrest even has a groove to accommodate women who wear their hair tied back in ponytails.
There is no gas cap. Instead the car has a valve that prevents fumes from getting out.
The filler hole for the window washer fluid is next to the fuel nozzle.
"I think you should call it a crossover between a coupe and SUV and sports car," said Peter Ganjbar, Volvo spokesman. "I think the look will surprise people."
Volvo President Hans-Olov Olsson has made promotion of women within Volvo Cars one of his top priorities, and the YCC is the most visible manifestation of that.
In addition to the woman-only core team, 140 other Volvo workers -- including 100 women -- worked on the YCC for the last 15 months.

I think we have a winner for the ugliest steering wheel contest...
That thing is just hidious...first thing is get rid of the body cladding, but it would still be horrible.

I think the center part of the wheel with the controls is stationary, and the wheel rotates around it.

its ok, but (putting on flame retardant gear) leave it to a buncha women to design a super low maintainance car. ![Wink](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
but yeah, it looks ok needs less plastic panelling. it looks kinda like the Jag RD6 or whatever.

I'm with bigman.
This is what happens when an all-woman team gets the power to design a whole car. They have no original thought of their own for the exterior of the car, so they copy from the popular current "S" design from Volvo. (Which actually, makes sense) BUT, when it comes to the interior, they actually get "creative" in their own minds and "F" it up by designing a completely style-less bland interior filled with squared-off pieces of plastic-looking material everywhere. What's with the center dash design....hideous. And yes, that is the ugliest looking steering wheel I have seen since the last time I sat in anything in the Pontiac lineup (excluding the GTO, which has been refreshed with a more euro look, IMO).
Personally, I am not surprised with this concept.
I hate to sound soooooo sexist, but that is my personal opinion on this car only. I'm sure many educated and talented women have contributed to designing beautiful cars in the past, present and future. Just not this one.
