It's had the stadium seating as part of the versatility package since the car's release. The only trouble is that when you fold down the seats, they aren't going to make a nice, flat, cargo surface. It also has weird gaps in between said seats when folded, so items may get lodged in there or not mt as easy to remove. Something that is to be appreciated in, say, and MDX.

True. Then again, the XC90 is a premium SUV (i.e.: X5), where layout of the cargo area is not as important (to the typical buyer) as other features readily avail in the 90.

Pricing announced...

From Leftlanenews...

Volvo today announced availability and pricing for the XC90 V8 Sport — featuring a dynamic chassis setting, unique appearance, interior specification upgrades, and sport tuned suspension. "Pricing and positioning in this extremely competitive segment are integral to success," said Anne Bélec, president and CEO, Volvo Cars of North America. The 311 horsepower SUV will cost $49,300.

"We have had numerous requests for a sportier XC90," said Susanna Johnsson, Product Manager of Special Vehicles at Volvo Car Corporation. "They are from customers who appreciate the versatility and comfort of an SUV but who also want a bit more driving pleasure. We have developed the Volvo XC90 V8 Sport especially for them, with a dynamic sport chassis, stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers, a sport-tuned, speed-dependent steering system, and larger, 19" wheels," she explained.

The Volvo XC90 Sport will be launched with 2 colors that are unique for this XC90 variant – Passion Red and Electric Silver – plus double chromed exhaust pipes. The interior is customized with a sport steering wheel and gear selector covered in perforated leather, plus sports seats with additional lateral cushioning to support the driver during cornering.

By 2018 every model they sell will be new. Including the new V60 (next generation). The XC90 in this thread will be their oldest model.

Motor Trend has a list of facts about the new model.

http://wot.motortrend.com/1408_10_co...olvo_xc90.html

Here are some of them.

3. The XC90’s prominent grill features a fresh take on Volvo’s signature iron mark, whose iconic arrow now aligns with the diagonal slash. Along with the T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” DRLs, the new grille will spread across the Volvo lineup.

5. Despite its large size, the XC90 boasts a sleek drag coefficient of 0.30, making it more aerodynamic than a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT coupe.

9. Go big or go home: The new XC90 can be had with 22-inch wheels, the same size rims used on the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

10. The top-line XC90 T8, which sports a twin-charged 2.0-liter I-4 paired with an electric motor, touts a combined torque rating of 443 lb-ft, or only 27 lb-ft shy of the output from the Escalade’s 6.2-liter V-8.

lol, wtf does "making it more aerodynamic" mean? Does the XC90 generate the same amount of downforce as the SLS AMG GT coupe?

less drag? SSFTSXX must had some influence on that statement.

So soccer moms can get to the field faster with less gas?

Press release...

Months of speculation ended today after Volvo Cars unveiled its all-new Volvo XC90, delivering on its promise to introduce a visually striking, premium quality seven-seat SUV with world leading safety features, new powertrain technologies, an unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency and a superlative interior finish.

Three years in the making and part of a USD 11bn investment programme, the new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilising its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology.

“This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company. The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group.

Volvo’s new face

Symbolising this historic day in Volvo’s 87 year history, the new XC90 will be the first of its cars to carry the company’s new more prominent iron mark, which has the iconic arrow elegantly aligned with the diagonal slash across the grille. Together with the T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” DRL lights, the iron mark introduces an entirely new, distinctive and confident face for Volvo’s forthcoming generation of cars.

The XC90’s larger bonnet with its new topography, the beltline and the sharpened shoulders connecting with the tattoo-like, new rear lights are other important design signatures that will be mirrored across the range.

To add more visual muscle from the sides, the XC90 comes with a range of wheel sizes up to 22 inches.

“The overall impression, both exterior and interior, has a strong connection to the key elements of the Swedish lifestyle: the generous space, the celebration of light and the focus on wellbeing,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group.

First SUV without compromises

The XC90 is firm evidence of the Volvo-by-Volvo strategy. Its outstanding combination of luxury, space, versatility, efficiency and safety will bring the SUV segment into a new dimension, just as the original XC90 achieved in 2002.

“SPA has enabled us to create the world’s first SUV without compromises,” says Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “You get the in-command feel, generous interior space and flexible capability combined with the agility and smooth comfort of a much smaller and lower car. The adrenaline rush that is key to true driving pleasure is delivered by powertrains that offer an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation. And since the XC90 carries the Volvo badge, world-class safety is standard.”

Unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency

The new XC90 offers a range of two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency.

The top of the range XC90 Twin Engine, which combines a two-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offers an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation: around 400 horsepower with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of around 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle).

Most comprehensive standard safety package

The all-new XC90 offers the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. It includes two world first safety technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability.

In a run-off road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain.

The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher.

City Safety becomes the umbrella name for all of Volvo Cars’ auto brake functions, which are standard equipment in the all-new XC90. It now covers vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car, day and night.

“The new technologies will take us a significant step closer to our vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020,” says Dr Mertens. “Our starting point on safety is the same today as it was when the company was created almost 90 years ago: real-life situations. We study data. We crunch numbers. We innovate. The result is one of the safest cars ever made.”

Three focus areas will help Volvo Cars to reach Vision 2020: safety, connectivity and autonomous drive.

“With the XC90, we take the first step towards self-driving cars. A new function that automatically follows the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic will provide a radically simplified, semi-autonomous driving experience,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management of Volvo Car Group.

Luxurious interior
The XC90’s interior is the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo. The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system. This system is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services. It also helps create an interior that is modern, spacious and uncluttered.

“The new interior is pure and uncluttered, while still radiating the sophisticated confidence and formality that luxury SUV customers expect. The simplicity is perfectly in tune with our Scandinavian design heritage. It opens up generous surfaces and gives us the opportunity to create a modern, luxurious interior architecture,” says Mr Ingenlath.

The new XC90 interior combines materials such as soft leather and wood with handcrafted details, including a gear lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glassmaker, and diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control. Craftsmanship has been in sharp focus during the whole development work.

The all-new Volvo XC90 - interior

The genuine seven seater features new, innovatively designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers both in the second and third seat rows. The third row offers class-leading comfort for two passengers up to 170 cm tall.

One of the top audio systems in the world

The XC90 features one of the top audio systems available in the automotive world after Volvo Cars audio experts joined forces with their counterparts at the renowned British audio equipment company Bowers & Wilkins.

The top-of-the-line system in the XC90 features a 1,400 Watt Class D amplifier and 19 Bowers & Wilkins speakers. It also includes one of the first air-ventilated subwoofers in a car. Integrated into the car body, it turns the whole interior space into a giant subwoofer.

The latest sound processing software has ben used to manage the timing of the sound and co-ordination of the speakers. This brings the emotional experience of a world-class live performance into the car.

Two main accessory themes

The all-new XC90 is available with a range of accessories that makes it possible for the owner to create a truly personalised car. There are two major exterior styling themes:

The Urban Luxury package combines a colour co-ordinated body kit with polished stainless steel details, such as front deco frames, front and rear skid plates and side scuff plates. The 21-inch exclusive polished wheels complete the elegant look.

The Rugged Luxury kit enhances the ruggedness of the XC90 SUV with tech matte black exterior trim, stainless steel skid plates, running boards with illumination and integrated exhaust pipes. This version is supplemented by unique 22-inch wheels.

The initial series of 1,927 cars celebrates the year Volvo was founded 87 years ago

Volvo Cars is releasing a limited First Edition of its all-new Volvo XC90, which was launched today in Stockholm. The 1,927 individually numbered cars celebrate the year Volvo was founded and, for the first time in history, they will only be available for sale via digital commerce at www.volvocars.com.

The online store opens for business on September 3rd at 16.00 hrs CET.

“Those who want to be among the first ones to own the best SUV in the world have to act fast. The huge interest in the all-new XC90 indicates that the First Edition will sell out quickly,” said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service of Volvo Car Group.

The online only First Edition is just one example of Volvo Cars’ revitalized approach to marketing activities and outstanding personal service.

“We are creating an online ecosystem that simplifies the process of shopping for, buying and owning a Volvo,” said Mr Visser. “We also see the introduction of the new XC90 as the perfect platform for introducing a new, outstanding customer experience, which we are rolling out globally.”

Black exterior and amber leather seats

The Onyx Black exterior and 8-spoke, 21-inch inscription wheels are combined with an interior featuring nappa leather seats in Amber, a Charcoal leather dashboard and Linear Walnut inlays.

checked it out today and the interior is AMAZING.

there was a camo one driving down a secluded street alongside the hudson river where i bike. they settled by a parking lot with no cross traffic. the testers were taking photos of themselves with the car with the river/GW bridge in the background. i spoke with them briefly (they all flew into Newark from sweden the night before). i peaked inside and the thing looks phenomenal. the tan, baseball stitching seating (photo above) was very impressive.

did a quick search...Volvo North America is located in the pallisades. they must take their test mules down henry hudson drive (which is basically a biker/runner street with no homes or cross streets)

Additional details/information on the car...

As has been known for some time, Volvo’s future lineup—starting with the all-new 2016 XC90—will come powered exclusively by engines with no more than four cylinders. However, in order to match the performance of rivals, Volvo will equip its cars with turbocharging and hybrid technology.

The most potent of Volvo’s next-generation powertrains can be found in the T8 variant of the new XC90 SUV, which combines a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and electric motor to form a plug-in hybrid setup. The engine powers the front wheels while the electric motor powers the rear pair.

Now we have an idea of how the system will performance. According to Volvo, peak output of the XC90 T8 is a V-8-like 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to get the seven-seat SUV moving from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds. And when it comes to fuel efficiency, Volvo says owners can expect 59 MPGe for the combined cycle.

The system offers up five different modes that driver can select from: Hybrid, Pure Electric, Power, AWD and Save. The Hybrid mode is the vehicle’s default setting and is ideal for everyday use. It automatically selects which powerplants to use (engine, motor or both) to deliver the best overall fuel consumption.

Pure Electric mode means the electric motor will be working on its own. In this mode, owners can expect to travel around 25 miles before the engine kicks in. The Power mode uses both powerplants to their fullest, at the expense of efficiency.

AWD mode leaves the vehicle’s all-wheel-drive system permanently on. With this mode switched off, the vehicle can switch to a two-wheel-drive mode to help boost efficiency. Finally, there is the Save mode, which will maintain a level of charge in the vehicle’s battery so that electric only driving can be chosen on demand.

The new XC90 goes on sale next spring. This T8 variant will be joined in U.S. showrooms by a T6 model. This will come with the same supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine fitted to the T8 but without the electric motor. Output of this model will be 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and drive will go to all four wheels via a conventional mechanical all-wheel-drive setup.

Cool Lounge Console Interior

Source: Shanghai ?15. Who needs a passenger seat? Volvo Lounge Console | crankandpiston.com Car Culture Lifestyle

Got a luxury car? And a chauffeur? Don’t you just hate that front passenger seat being there when you want to have somewhere to put your feet?

Volvo feels your pain. The Swedish brand has just unveiled a new concept XC90 with a feature called the Lounge Console, which it says “takes executive in-car luxury to a new level”. It basically replaces the front passenger seat with a glorified footrest, or according to the press release “a compact and versatile solution to expanded story and comfort”. Riiiight.

Why has Volvo done this? Let’s ask Thomas Ingenlath, the senior vice president of design. “We started this work by looking at the executive lifestyle,” he said at the Shanghai Motor Show. “With our progressive approach to premium design and functionality we analysed the needs and perspective of the chauffeur driven executive, designing the car around him or her in the spirit of our brand’s aim.

“A key element in our thinking was how to make the available interior space work for the occupants in an optimal and luxurious fashion. Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior and led to a firework of ideas and new possibilities.”

A FIREWORK OF IDEAS, PEOPLE; explosions of creativity that led to a seat being removed and replaced with a unit that includes a work table and a mirror. It’s got a storage tray for jewellery, make-up, watches and the like as well. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL. Flip it around and you’ll find a 17-inch screen and a foot rest.

Go on, admit it. You think it’s a good idea now. And you want one in your Corolla.
Very, very cool.
