No future for ICE: Volvo commits to total EV

Volvo declares total phaseout of ICE cars by 2030 (only hybrid cars after 2025). I really pity those who will be buying an ICE car after 2025.

But something tells me that Volvo is simply lying about their timeline. They probably have it worked out (or actively trying) to be sooner, but are simply giving the 10 year timeframe so that their existing business won't suffer immediately.

“No future” for ICE: Volvo will sell only pure electric cars by 2030

Swedish-Chinese carmaker Volvo has joined a growing number of global car manufacturers to embrace the transition to all-electric vehicles, announcing that it will sell only fully electric cars by 2030.

“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” Henrik Green, chief technology officer for Volvo said in a statement.

“We are firmly committed to becoming an electric-only car maker and the transition should happen by 2030. It will allow us to meet the expectations of our customers and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting climate change.”

Volvo’s announcement is a clear commitment to zero-emissions and to stop making – within the decade – any car that has an internal combustion engine, including hybrids.

It’s just the latest in a series of commitments made by global car makers in the last few weeks, including by GM, Jaguar Land Rover and Ford in response to the pressing need to slash emissions, and in response to government policies that limit emissions, in contrast to what is happening in Australia.

Norway has pledged to ban new petrol and diesel car sales by 2025, the UK and other European countries by 2030, Japan and California by 2035, while the US federal government has pledged to transition its entire fleet to electric – although it as yet to set a date. In Europe, carmakers have to pay huge fines if they do not meet strict vehicle emissions regulations.

Volvo’s announcement comes as the company unveils its first pure electric SUV, the C40 Recharge, which will join its XC40 Recharge which is set to be launched in Australia in August, and the electric offshoot Polestar’s Polestar 2 which will follow in 2022.

According to Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive of Volvo, the decision recognises that electric mobility is the future and that to remain relevant, a commitment to go all-electric is the only way to go.

“To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future – electric and online,” said Samuelsson in a statement.
“We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment.” Volvo already has a plan to roll out a number of all-electric vehicles: by 2025 it is aiming to sell 50% all-electric vehicles. By 2030, this will be only 100% battery electric vehicles.

More power to EV revolution. The sandbags holding the floodwaters are beginning to fail one by one..
Dinosaurs are finally seeing the writing on the wall and now actively trying to follow Tesla.

It makes sense for Volvo. Their special sauce has never been their powertrains; it's been safety, and not having to package an ICE motor up front will enable them to make their cars even safer.

Departing CEO Håkan Samuelsson told Autocar nearly a year ago about plans to kill some S and V models to channel more efforts towards SUVs. At that moment, he motivated the company's decision by saying more than 75 percent of sales were represented by an XC-badged model. Fast forward nearly a year later, the head honcho spoke with the British journalists once again about the fate of regular cars.

The Geely-owned marque won't abandon sedans and SUVs even though the XC60 was more popular than combined sales of the S60 / V60 and S90 / V90 in the first three quarters of last year. Next-generation S and V models are on the way and will be "even more attractive" by adopting a lower stance and a sleeker shape. "These low cars will be in addition to our high-positioned SUVs. Stay tuned."

He went on to say successors to today's sedans and wagons will be "a little less square" to improve drag coefficient and consequently boost efficiency. Mercedes will be going down the same road, heralded by the Vision EQXX concept with its impressively low Cd of 0.17. To be replaced in March by ex-Dyson Group CEO Jim Rowan, outgoing Volvo CEO went as far as to say the revamped S and V models will have a coupe-ish silhouette.

Volvo has vowed to go completely electric, but that won't happen until the end of the decade. In the meantime, there's likely time for one more generation of combustion-engined cars. As to whether both "60" and "90" sedan and wagon lineups will be renewed, it's unclear at this point. When the new models will arrive, these will eschew the "S" and "V" letters since future cars will adopt names to replace the uninspiring alphanumeric nomenclature.

Speaking of names, the next-generation XC90 coming in EV guise will debut later this year possibly with the "Embla" moniker. It will ride on a dedicated electric platform and could be followed by a larger SUV previewed by the Concept Recharge and rumored to arrive in production guise in 2023.

Volvo and Starbucks are joining forces to give electric vehicle owners a more pleasant charging experience. The two companies have announced a plan to install EV charging stations at Starbucks coffee shops across several U.S. states as part of a pilot program to study the project's scalability. About 60 chargers will be installed at 15 Starbucks locations along a 1,350-mile route between Denver and Seattle, which is home to the coffee giant.

Volvo told Autoblog that the chargers will be a mix of ChargePoint DC chargers comprised of Express 250 units, capable of delivering 62.5 kW, and Express Plus units, capable of delivering up to 350 kW. All chargers will have both CHAdeMO and CCS plugs.

Placed about 100 miles apart, the charger-equipped Starbucks fall within the range of most EVs, and their relative proximity should limit the amount of advanced planning one would have to do during an EV road trip. The companies plan to offer them to any drivers of electric cars. Charging fees will apply, but Volvo vehicles will get to use them either free of charge or at a discount. The locations of these chargers will show up in ChargePoint's smartphone app, or with an in-dash app on Google-equipped Volvo models.

Jokes about latte-sipping Volvo drivers aside, the program opens a world of new opportunities for charging. A Volvo C40 Recharge takes about 40 minutes to replenish its batteries from 20% to 90%. Other electric cars are comparable. A coffee shop is a much more pleasant place to wait that out than a Kroger or Walmart, and as we discovered last week, EV chargers and businesses like Starbucks are banned from interstate rest areas by federal law. Add the availability of wifi and clean-ish bathrooms at most Starbucks locations, and it makes for an ideal pit stop opportunity. Besides, on a long road trip, drivers must replenish their caffeine just as cars must replenish their fuel tanks or batteries. The solution — chargers at coffee shops — is so glaringly obvious, it's a wonder why it's taken so long for a partnership like this to happen.

Businesses offering charging options is going to be huge for EV travel in the next few years. It's a great way to get customers to stop and spend some cash at your establishment in exchange for a charge.
