Son of Supra

Looking for a high-profile sports car to polish its image, Toyota is finishing up development of a Supra successor, code-named project 395.
When you think of exciting Toyota sports cars, one you can't ignore is the lovely 2000 GT featured in the 1967 James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. The new front-engine, rear-drive sports car will even borrow subtle styling cues from that icon.
Our sources suggest Toyota is looking at two distinct versions for production. One will use a 3.5-liter development of the new V6 (introduced in the 2006 Lexus GS 300), making 300 horsepower. The second, higher-intensity model could use the company's 4.3-liter V8, tweaked to give about 350 hp.
Styling features a long front deck and short rear, much like the Mercedes-Benz SLK, BMW Z4 and Honda S2000 that the new Toyota will compete against. We expect it will employ a conventional folding soft top.
Pricing will likely run close to $30,000 for the V6 (to rustle 350Z feathers) and into the low-$40,000 range for the V8. The Supra spirit will rise again!

it's a tribute to the old 2000GT... it had a similar headlight arrangement. sure, it looks bad, but hey, tribute.

Hmm... RWD, optional V8, and Toyota reliablity for around $40K, sounds like a winner to me.
I'll be ready for something new by 2007, so unless acura comes out with something similiar, I would be interested in a toyota sportscar...

This is all CGI stuff ... you never know what the final version will be ... maybe a hint of it at the Tokyo Auto Salon this fall? The GTR 'test mules' at the 'ring ... who knows what the market version will be. I just wished they would freshen up the R34 design (as opposed to go with the R35 design) I was totally shocked at the R35 GTR concept at the 2001 NAIAS ... (I asked, "This is the Skyline???")
Oh well ... we'll see it (eventually)

making that thing an 8 cyl will be it's downfall. It will be a hot car out of the box, but what makes the last supra so appealing was the 3.0 litre 2jz twin turbo motor than can be worked to all hell.

Rumorville:
Plans for Toyota to introduce a replacement for its Supra sports car are inevitable, according to sources. The rendering above is an indication of what such a twenty-first-century Supra might look like, but click the minimized magazine article (immediately below) for some real world shots of what may be the final result.
Hopefully headed for production (and the United States) in 2006 and likely based on the upcoming second-generation Lexus IS platform, the new coupe (which might get a new name) is said to be a modern interpretation of Toyota's classic 2000GT of the 1960s. Engines are set to be 3.0- and 3.5-liter normally aspirated V6s matched to a six-speed close-ration transmission.
The curvy, compact, all-new sports coupe is expected to be a direct competitor to the Nissan 350Z, which certainly has enjoyed a successful head start. The previous Supra was last sold here in the 1998 model year, by which time it, like the last-generation Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, had suffered dwindling sales as a result of high sticker prices and spiraling insurance costs. As Nissan has done with the 350Z, Toyota wisely will avoid expensive and complex twin-turbo engines for the new Supra, which should allow for asking prices in the $30,000 range.
