Regardless of who anyone knows at TMC or TRD, the president of Toyota (yes, from Japan) was at our new dealership grand opening dinner. When our owner asked him "will there be a new Supra", he replied with a simple "yes". The president of Toyota North America was at a similar function in Wisconsin recently. He was also asked the same question by our owner. His response was another "yes".

Also, keep in the mind the last Supra, the MKIV was revealed to the press just 3 months before it's official debut. At the time, Supra owners thought the MKIII was the last Supra.

My guess is the base will use the new 3.0 liter shared with the next IS and GS 300.
The v-8 will use the current Lexus 4.3 liter or a new V-8 shared with Lexus.

No pics yet.

I don't think this e-mail, I just got is a coincidence. I am sure something Supra/Lexus shared and based is coming:

Date: 18-08-2004 à 17:12
Message: Hey Mike, i just talk to one of Lexus guy and he said in 2 years we will have a high 12's or a low 13's car. I think they will wait until June 06 to launch it( same time in Japan). That make a lot of sense man. They hold everything until the Japan launch. I mean this year we got zero new model and then next year we got the RX400, the GS and then the IS. I think 2006 is gonna be big. But the new super car is just what I've heard from some big vig and it's may be just a rumor. But seeing some CEO from Japan stopped by the shop in the past 2 months and some big group from CA make me believe that something is cooking

Sounds like this post should be put in the lockbox for another two years yet.

Is that $3k for the intercooler or $3k for the S/C with the intercooler?

A Supra from Toyota makes a lot of sense. Will it happen? Up to now I saw nothing from Toyota worth being excited about except the tC. I hope they build it, but if it will be available in 2 years, it's 3 years late.

Isn’t that the same timeframe that the new M3 V8 is debating?
Not the EXACT same market, but you could compare the cars based on their expected price & performance potential.

Talk is cheap; I have heard so many new Supra rumors before only to have my hopes crushed by Toyota's conservatism. Car first, talk later.

srika 08-19-2004 11:35 AM

yeah... I don't really pay attention to any "new supra" news anymore. If a new supra arrives, that'll be cool... but all this speculation over the past SIX stinking years has just been enough, for me. Would love to think this news is true.

I didn't say that. If you look at the link that is what the TRD dude said. The 350Z ain't exactly lightning anyway.
Oh and:
MKIV Supra 0-60 under 5 seconds
GS 400 was the fastest accelerating auto sedan 0-60 in 5.7 seconds

They can if they want too...

which company has F1 presence? (however putrid Toyota's performance in F1 has been, an F1 car is still an F1 car... and an F1 car runs the 1/4 mile in ~9.0 @ 180 mph and pulls 4g's in the turns - that's a bit fast, imo - not to mention 3-4g's under hard braking.) :)

Toyota will have a fast car again... they are just taking their time. a bit too much time, imo. but anyway.

Yeah that's about the same timeframe.

It'd be funny if the new Supra GT gives the new M3 a run for its money. I hope Cadillac will be closer to that goal than Toyota. It'd be a shame for GM to see Toyota be more successful in that goal.

The only fact that makes makes me believe of Supra reincarnation rumors is Toyota's presence in F1 and its budget there. Highest by far of all teams. That tells me that it's only a matter of time before Toyota is beating everyone there. Watch.

kansaiwalker1 08-19-2004 02:27 PM

Toyota is making soo much money now and is sitting on such a huge cash hoard you would think they would throw their car enthusiasts a bone and give them a new Supra.

But then again Toyota is soo conservative that they only want to build a mass production car that will appeal to Toyota drivers who want something slightly sportier than a Solara.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a Supra reincarnation, but I think Fox Mulder will find his sister before we will ever see a new Supra.

Slightly sportier than a Solara was the Celica. Apparently that's not what Toyota buyers wanted. Or was that...too sporty?

I can't remember Bestcar ever being right about a design, anyways it says "Upcoming Tokyo Auto Show" "Introduction of Rear wheel drive front engine V8 powered sports car from Toyota"

white3.0 08-25-2004 11:19 PM

felixthekat 10-12-2004 11:45 PM

The Supra is back.. Maybe.

From Autoweek:

http://autoweek.com/files/weekart/20...-toysupera.jpg

Meanwhile, Toyota is cooking up its own limited-production supercar, one that will either be the next Supra (with a possible TXS badge) or a high-end sports car for Lexus. The car caught testing is believed to be an early engineering mule for a 500-hp, 370-lb-ft V10-powered car. Weighing less than 3000 pounds, the sports car is expected to readily run to 190 mph.

Sources say Toyota is eyeing a 2005 Tokyo Motor Show introduction, with an on-sale date in late 2006 or early 2007. Pricing will be in excess of $100,000 for one of an estimated 12,000 that Toyota plans to produce.
Weeee.. It's back! But gosh, that is expensive.

iamhomin 10-12-2004 11:46 PM

Good God, 500hp for a >3000lbs sports car?

CGTSX2004 10-12-2004 11:47 PM

Lines look kinda similar to a Corvette. The power rating is pretty good.

phile 10-12-2004 11:58 PM

That's what we think over on the ACL thread about this. There's a drawing that shows a midengine looking car, dare I say exotic, but the spy pic shows a silhouette that's more like a front engine Corvette-ish type of car.

TSX 'R' US 10-13-2004 12:05 AM

Lets hope the final product will look as agressive as it seems...

txathlete 10-13-2004 12:18 AM

Damn! I've always wanted a Supra (97 or 98 twin turbo). I better start saving my change. hehehe

Junkster 10-13-2004 12:45 AM

I think Toyota should eye a Supra replacement before a super car like this...

Junkster, who thought the last Supra wasn't that impressive

Supras in general were pretty impressive. Yeah, they were a bit overweight, but they were still fast for what they were.
