The xB and xD were just redesigned/introduced about a year ago. The oldest model they have is the tC and that came in 2005.

Why not? They can just get bailed out for their "intelligence". Who needs profits anyways?

Toyota halts work on Mississippi Prius plant

Citing the global automotive sales downturn, Toyota announced today that it has suspended work on its new Tupelo, Mississippi, assembly plant that had already delayed Toyota Prius production fromlate 2010 to early 2011. Toyota says it will finish construction of the facility, but it will hold off on equipment installation, thus delaying the production date.

Toyota says the plant’s structure is about 90 percent complete. The automaker said in a statement that the employees already hired for the plant will keep their jobs, though no completion date has been specified. Toyota has invested $300 million to date in the assembly plant.

Initially, Toyota had planned to build the Highlander crossover at the assembly plant, but due to the slowdown in sales, the automaker made the decision to produce then hot-selling Priuses in Tupelo.

Toyota was set to build the all-new Prius, which will be unveiled next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, at the Mississippi plant.

Didn't it have different headlights before, that went nearly all the way up to the edge of the hood? It looked extremely weird IIRC. This looks better, but that's not saying much as I don't like the jagged headlight look either.

- Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest automaker, will cut the base price of its Prius gas- electric hybrid model by $1,000 to $21,000, as it competes with Honda Motor Co.’s Insight, said a person familiar with the matter.

Honda introduced the Insight on March 24 with a sticker price starting at $19,800, undercutting the 2009 Prius, which starts at $22,000. Toyota will announce prices on the 2010 model tomorrow, with details about the new car tomorrow, said the person, who asked not to be named because the statement is pending.

Not sure this will affect sales of the Insight any - tho I'm sure it will help Prius sales.

A very smart move by Toyota. They want to retain the "status" of the "Prius being the hybrid leader"

They already do in Kalifornia...

So Toyota is going to be offering this cheaper model a few months after the car debuts? Sounds like a last minute desperate decision. Makes me wonder what they will be removing from the already base car to drop the price by $1,000. Batteries not included?

Toyota has the perfect excuse to lower the price but even if Honda didn't come out with the Insight they probably would have had a price cut or dealer cash cause hybrids are just not moving.

Post Recall/Lawsuit

Toyota may have one of the best reputations for quality around, but the Japanese automaker has found itself at the center of a firestorm involving potentially defective Prius headlights. Hundreds of previous-generation Prius owners have filed complaints with the U.S. Transportation Department, claiming the hybrid’s headlights prematurely expire, leaving owners with enormous repair costs.

The complaints involve previous-generation Prius models equipped with option high-intensity discharge headlights. The U.S. Transportation Department officially opened a case to investigate the complaints last April and a class action lawsuit was filed against Toyota last month. In all, the U.S. Transportation Department has received 338 complaints, according to Automotive News.

Disgruntled owners are upset that Toyota’s warranty doesn’t cover the HID bulbs. Including labor, the HID systems typically cost between $300 and $1,800 to replace.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into the situation but has yet to announce an official recall.

The class action lawsuit, filed in New York, claims “Toyota is concealing the problems from owners” and that the Japanese automaker has “long been aware of Prius’ HID headlight problem.” Although Toyota says it’s “looking into” the complaints, the lawsuit couldn’t be coming at a worse time. Toyota just released its third-generation Prius and could face a potential back lash in sales.

This is the first I've heard of any headlight problems, but I don't venture over to the Toyota forums so I'm probably not up on the latest info. I wonder if people are just pissed off that the headlights cost so much to replace, or if there's really premature wear or some kind of problem.

probably pissed off at both. aftermarket HID kits are cheap now. but HIDs are suppose to last much much longer than a regular halogen bulb so yeah i'd be pissed too.

$300 and $1800? what kind of HID bulbs are they using? made of gold?

a pair of D2R bulbs will run you under $100.
