As we know, Toyota will kill the current MR2 in the USA but it looks like that may not be the case for other markets.

I have a feeling that the cladding on that mule is more intense than it seems. And I also have a feeling that this'll end up being a hot car and we'll wish we had it.
Toyota has close ties with Lotus these days, and if anyone can build a roadster, it's Lotus.

I agree, when Toyota says this car is dead, I believe this car is dead. It would be retarded from a marketing perspective to assume otherwise. They could be testing a suspension and engine from any under $ 25kcar without any consequences.

Meanwhile, Toyota also appears to be testing the world's first mid-engined hybrid, disguised as an MR2. Toyota showed such a sports car – the CS&S concept – at the 2003 Frankfurt show. The Prius' 1.5-litre was mid-mounted and drove the rear wheels, while two electric motors span the front axle.
"It's an area we are playing around with – it's my pastime", says head of R&D Dr Akihiko Saito. With hybrid powertrains shrinking in size and weight, there's a chance the next MR2 could go hybrid. Today's car bows out of the US market at the end of 2005 although UK sales should continue. The company is clearly looking at a radical successor – but there is no definitive word on production yet.

Come on, a 4.5L V10 in the MR-2? And there's that Supra-replacement coming up with another V10 engine?
I don't see Toyota being that radical, even in their Lexus division. Also, I don't see enough of a market for two V10 powered cars to be released.

New MR2 to Rival CR-Z
Honda is really scaring the pants off of Toyota executives with their new 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid and their ambitious target of selling 400,000 hybrids by 2012. However, Toyota is not about to give up any time soon. It was recently reported that Toyota is working on a cheaper hybrid that it will aim at the new Honda Insight.
The folks at AutoExpress are now reporting that Toyota is also hard at work on the comeback of the MR2. The UK publication reports that the MR2 will return as a performance-hybrid that will rival Honda’s upcoming CR-Z hybrid coupe.
The Toyota MR2 will leave behind its roadster heritage for a compact coupe with a rear-wheel-drive chassis. It will feature a paddle-shift gearbox and a Toyota Prius powertrain with design slightly influenced by the FT-HS concept.
Toyota’s executive vice president Masatami Takimoto told AutoExpress that the company is working on a small hybrid sports car based on the MR2 that will carry a Prius hybrid set-up with “greater responsiveness.”
Speculation has it that the car could do 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds while returning 60 mpg (50 mpg in U.S. terms). Stay tuned for more details.

I'm tired of this crap Honda and Toyota are pulling. haw-haw, you made a hybrid well I'm going to make one more affordable than yours. oh yea? now I'm going to have two hybrids, one smaller and another one even bigger than yours!
Gone is the potential of the great SW20 MR2 with its iron block 3S-GTE. Toyota basically said "fuck off" to a loyal group of enthusiasts by not offering the 2ZZ in the 3rd gen MR2. I don't think there's a single late 90's Toyota or 2000+ Toyota/Scion car I'm interested in, as opposed to how there's tons of 80's and mid-90's Toyotas that I really like.
I have very little/no hope for this car. No manual transmission? That's BS.... just another "hey look, we're an environmentally friendly company, so buy one of our cars!" vehicle to add to Toyota's green image.
