BUT.............it had potential. I don't think an AE86 was "fast" stock was it?

slap on some deep dish 15s or 14s, coilover kit, and you're good to go.

Actually the 4A-GE was only rated at 112 hp in that car...pretty detuned yes, but obviously it wasn't a tire roaster. (Considering the base corollas with the carbuerated engines only had like 80 hp, it was significantly quicker)

They should drop a 2ZZ in the new one and rate it at 170-180 hp. that would be tight.

Toyota AE86 (2008?)

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/01/r...-more-details/

Rumoured New Toyota AE86 - more details

The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru. And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money.

Cheap, lightweight, lots of mod potential, and RWD.

Sounds like a real winner.

Somebody send this article to Honda already with a big "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GENIUSES WAITING FOR??" plastered on top.

1000kgs is like 2200lbs... Even with only 120hp that would be a blast to drive...

There's been AE86 rumors for the last couple of years:

September's MT is also reporting a smaller RWD Pontiac that will slot underneath the G8.

The gray one looks pretty awesome and could be a toyota. the bumper though reminds me of a Z.

I wouldn't be surprised if the red one ends up being a Scion in some way, it's headlights look similar to the headlights on the tC, and it's curves match up with the tC as well.

Hmmm... looks like the lightweight rwd coupe market is expanding... It used to be just roadsters (Z4,S2k, Miata, etc) an a couple of 2+2 coupes (rx-8, 911).

It appears the auto industry is finally responding to my rants

careless what the car looks like...

As long as it is RWD and SUPER LIGHT. i dont care if it has 100 hp.... i would get one.

For those of u who are saying AE86/Corolla arent fast... you are right... they were never fast IN DRAG RACING ... and they dont have to be...

and also... it has to be HIGH REV.... 100hp with 7000 rpm is No FUN

wow, I was kinda let down that the 1 serries wasn't gonna have a 4cylander model in America (among other facts about it). My 2002 weighed around a ton and probably had in todays standards 70 or 80 hp, it was quite fun.

This just cheered me right up. If they can get it into America at that weight and price, I'll just be beside myself with joy. - if any of the rumors are true that is

Hopefully they have a real cheap base model that has no power steering. Toyota's electric power steering system is too floaty.
