Talking TL Performance, one data point

I decided to gather some performance data using my Passport G-Timer GT2 this evening.

The 04TL has 680 miles, the outdoor temp was 59 degrees F, the road was dry, and the relative humidly was about 40%. VSA was off, A/C was off, transmission in automatic mode. No traffic.

I made two 1/4 mile runs in opposite directions:

#1 1/4 mile: 14.75 @ 95.5
0-60: 6.27

#2 1/4 mile: 14.75 @ 96.3
0-60: 6.30

(Yes, the times were the same!)

#3 I ran one more 0-60.
0-60: 6.15

-r

PS - for reference my 01 CL-S with 46k miles had these results:

1/4 mile: 14.57 @ 96.7
0-60: 6.07

I think the TL will better that when it has more miles on it.

Looks like you're going towards the car's break-in period given that you're not yet there.

Regardless, those times look great! Plus if you give it a 6MT, it will get into late 5s for sure.

Great job on times, I'm more than delighted to see those numbers.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Acura_Driver -

Thanks for running the tests for us, I too have just gotten outside the 600 mile break in point

Sorry I do not know this, but what did any of the major car mags post for times on the 01 CL-S so that I can compare your numbers to thiers?? (plus your car is well broken in )

Thanks again!

Motor Trend is listing a 0-60 of 6.4 seconds for the 01 CL-S 5AT.

I do know my CL-S felt quicker than when new. That is why I bought the Passport G-Timer GT2. I was curious!

The CL-S was stock except for Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil, and 225-45WR17 Yokohama AVS ES100 tires.

Cool data.

I always wondered how accurate those things were.

I've had one for a little over a year now and I have to say I'm very impressed with it. It produces accurate and repeatable results.

Did you use brake torquing?

Also, does anyone know how the auto mags test 0-60 times? Do they have a device that attaches to the speedometer? And how do the commercially available devices like the GT2 compare to whatever these mags use?

Yes. I'll have to experiment a bit to find out what works best. On #3 I actually used less throttle before releasing the brake and flooring it, which led to a bit more wheel spin, and the faster 0-60. I'll repeat the test around 1400 miles.

An interesting observation. With the CL-S, the tires would actually chirp on the 1-2 shift under WOT. With the TL even under WOT the shifts are very smooth.

Traditionally the auto mags used a fifth-wheel that attached to the car to collect performance data. I think that now they use radar devices or more expensive devices similar to the GT2.

Dan Martin,

Which one have you had since most of the new ones such as passport have only been around less than a year (is it g-tech?)

I have been interested in buying one for some time and have considered the g-tech to have more features.

Thanks for your comments!

SS mode should shave off a couple tenths, or at least it does on the RSX auto, I haven't figured out the auto shifting thing on the TL yet...whether it shifts at the redline (auto) or fuel cutoff

I have the Passport GT2. Their head office is right around the corner from me and with friends in low places I was able to get one pretty well as soon as they came out.

I've been thinking of getting the data cable for hooking it up to my laptop but I've been looking for one on ebay.

The GT2 is very accurate but the best thing going for performance data (and what C&D uses) is the VBOX (http://www.racelogic.co.uk/vbox/ ).

Thanks! That info helped me find the following article about C&D's testing methodology. It's an interesting read (I always wondered how they get their numbers).

Oh, and that VBOX is one amazing piece of equipment. You think we can modify the TL's GPS nav to perform the same functions??

Those times are great. WIth more miles on the car I am sure they will only get lower. For reference, I ran a 14.71@ 96.3 at the track in my 2002 TLS. It was my first run at the track ever. I think the 2004 TLs are a wee bit faster but I can definitely hang around if we're talking auto vs. auto. I'm dying to see the official magazine times for the 6mt.

These things are way too optimistic. I have a G-Tech. the TL should go to 60mph in about 6.8-7s, realistically.
