Suzuki: Swift News

Spiritual successor to the old civic si's?...bargain bin mini cooper?

Swift should get about 45 mpg and sticker under $10,000

You know the old conundrum, "Fast car slow or slow car fast?" If you've never heard it before, it's a bit of automotive philosophy that asks on a given road, would you rather drive a Lamborghini Murcielago at five-tenths, or a 1982 Honda Prelude until the wheel-bearings shatter? And really, like the sound of one hand clapping, there is no answer. That said, the new 2011 Suzuki Swift is one slow car all of us would love to drive fast.

A 1.2-liter gas engine replaces the 1.3-liter from the previous Swift, but the new mill includes variable-valve technology, so while displacement is down, power is up -- 92 horsepower and 87 pound-feet of torque. True, that's barely enough oomph to get make it up the AMG staircase, but consider the Swift weighs half as much as most cars (the current car is just under one ton) and comes standard with a manual (automatic's an option). Sounds better now, no?

It's still a POS Suzuki. They have horrible quality issues.

No thanks.

Can someone photoshop my baby's head in the window?

The Suzuki would be about the same thing that my son would drive.

how in the shit is this even comparable to the civic si?

looks, performance, reliability? no.

i'd buy an early 90's civic over this junk any day.

Press release...

The SWIFT S-CONCEPT is based on the new Swift, which Suzuki began marketing in Europe in autumn 2010. A “more sporty and exciting” design theme is reflected by a look in which sportiness has been added to the Swift’s stylish design. In line with Suzuki’s brand philosophy of delivering excitement, the overall development concept was to create a premium sport compact with uncompromised performance.

Suzuki also plans to exhibit the Swift, Splash, Alto, Kizashi, Jimny, Grand Vitara, and SX4.

Somehow, I kinda like the look of this concept. A bit of Golf, and a dash of Mini, with a pinch of Versa. Not bad.

Suzuki is unveiling a new Swift Sport in time for the Frankfurt auto show nextg month. This week, we're getting the first look.

But give us a break: Suzuki says, "It has a more aggressive and dignified exterior look thanks to a ground-hugging form that gives a sense of stability and tension and a big front grille that evokes sporty performance." We're impressed at how they got aggressive, dignified and sporty all the in same sentence.

The new Swift Sport has more power, better fuel economy thanks to a 1.6-litre engine, which Suzuki developed exclusively for the Swift Sport. For the European version, there is a specially developed six-speed manual transmission. Suzuki says the sport cornersw more briskly and has a more responsive suspension.

As far as safety goes, the new Suzuki has seven airbags and an impact-absorbing body.

The swift is actually a pretty popular car in India...it comes in handy where there are tight parking spots and small maneuvering places (no lane discipline in India)....

I have driven the swift and it is fun to drive when you compare to other cars in India....

I have mixed emotions on how this car would do here in the US....the concept does look good....
