I'm not sure of your source. Subaru's press release says nothing about the 2.5 turbo in the Legacy. I do have it in my Forester though.

Fuji Heavy Industries Will Unveil New Legacy and Outback

Date: August 8, 2003
The Legacy 3.0R, powered by the new 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder Horizontally-Opposed Engine, and the all-new Outback to make their world debuts

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced that it will unveil its new Subaru Legacy and Outback models for the European market at the 60th International Motor Show (IAA) Passenger Cars, which will open its doors to the public in Frankfurt am Main from September 13 through 21, 2003. Both the Legacy Sedan 3.0R and Station Wagon 3.0R, which are fitted with the latest 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder Subaru Boxer Horizontally-Opposed Engine, and the all-new Outback will make their world debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Brief outlines of the Legacy 3.0R and the Outback Series

Legacy 3.0R (Sedan and Station Wagon)
The 3.0R model showcases a compact and low-center of gravity, 6-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine, which provides perfect engine balance, as the 6 pistons placed in horizontal opposition to each other effectively cancel out vibrations. With the adoption of the excellent qualities of the 6-cylinder boxer layout, the new EZ30 3.0-liter engine boasts a maximum power output of 180 kW (245 ps)/6,600 rpm, which ensures smooth engine acceleration, low-speed torque, and enhanced power output at high revolutions. The 3.0R model has been developed as a high-performance driver's car, integrating a symmetrical power train layout, Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel Drive) , together with the new powerful EZ30. It is also equipped with the newly developed SPORTSHIFT *E-5AT, a 5-speed automatic transmission that incorporates a manual mode and is fitted with 215/45ZR17 tires for outstanding driving performance.
(*The SPORTSHIFT is a registered trademark of Prodrive Ltd.)

Outback 3.0R and 2.5i
The all-new Outback continues its high-performance tradition as a crossover vehicle that offers the rugged versatility of an SUV and the comfort of a passenger car. With minimum road clearance of 200 mm, the Outback provides superb driving performance on rough roads, while it still embraces the sophisticated and dynamic designs of a sports car. The Outback 2.5i is equipped with a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder, Horizontally-Opposed Engine (max. power: 121 kW (165 ps)/5,600 rpm). The Outback 3.0R is fitted with the new 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder Horizontally-Opposed Engine. Since its introduction into the U.S. market in 1995, the Outback has enjoyed acclaim as a pioneer in the crossover vehicle category.

From what I've read in the Subaru forums, it seems what Subaru will release engine-wise to the USDM is still a bit of an unknown. One rumor has them incorporating the 2.5 liter H4 turbo into their entire line-up; other rumors say N/A on both the H4 and H6.

The press release from above is from the Frankfurt Auto Show. Subaru has not officially released the specs on the USDM 2005 MY as of yet.

YMMV...

From what I've read the car will have two high end engine choices ...

A 250hp H6 and a detuned STi-engined 4-cylinder with 250hp.

I've read that in Automobile, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend so obviously the Subaru PR people are giving them this info.

2005 Legacy... I know, we talked about it already...

I know, we talked about it here before, but another forum (i-club.com, I really need to not sign up for so many) has brought it to my interest again and many journals are reviewing it recently. If you don't know what it's about, here's a snippet from Subaru Japan website...

http://www.subaru.co.jp/legacy/index.html

The B4 model is the one of particular interest for me.
I know the design isn't anything revolutionary (more evolutionary), but is it just me or do you see a similarity between our beloved and the new legacy? And a look at the interior reminds me even more of the TSX.
In the States, it hits ground around May or so, and the turbo model follows, which will give about 250hp from what all the estimates are saying, this being the turbo flat four 2.5L. Pricing isn't official, but it would be in the 26~29 range (sound familiar?). Rumor (mind you, it's a rumor) has it that an STi version is even in the works, with the flat six recieving turbo massaging for a ~300hp model.

I know Subaru isn't a near luxury brand with the image that Acura carries, but I would have to say that, in the turbo form, it would be a direct competitor to a lot of entry level luxury sedans, with similar pricing. And with the AWD option coming into play, I might be intrigued to even go take it for a test drive for comparison.

I just wanted to know what other think in this forum.

Junkster, who drools at the McIntosh systems in the Legacy's.

Junks - The only reason I don't have a TSX yet, is my interest in the 2005 Legacy. Currently I drive a 98 Legacy and absolutely love the styling. While it lacks power and handling, it is quite surefooted. I had the opportunity to drive an STI, but I'm not sure I would want it to be my daily driver. I am very excited about the Legacy Turbo. The interior doesn't quite stack up and probably not the handling, but I think the overall package will sway me. If fiscally possible, the Legacy STI will be mine, but not likely.

Why would a car that "lacks handling" be on the short list for a TSX type person?

The current Legacy lacks handling. The new one remains to be seen. Looks promising, though.

Good Question, but I did say "probably" because I have not yet had a chance to drive it. I really haven't had a chance to drive any newer Subarus other then the 5 minutes in the STI. I imagine that their suspension has been greatly improved since 98, and the low engine has always provided a lower C of G. That being said, I don't know what to expect from the Subaru, hopefully I will be surprised. I am really impressed with the TSX setup, which is why it is still on my list.

Actually, the US market hasn't been able to get a sniff of the B line yet. Most Japanese journalists praise the Legacy B4 for its neutral handling and great power (although they get the 280hp model).
The person above was speaking of the older US models which can't compare to any of the recent releases.
Some US journalists who have driven the B4 have made similar praises about the car and have also been informed the only changes from the US and JDM models will be the name (GT for us, I believe), and the HP of 250 for the US market.

Junkster, who thinks eveyone must be gunning for Audi these days.

I was referring to a 98, which is two models back of the 05. I actually like the handling, but I’m sure anyone who has had one on the track would disagree.

I would consider a 2005 Legacy if I had waited another year to purchase. Our friend has a 2002 Legacy and loves it, but I think it's too slow. A sexier look and more power would make it a cool Subaru. AWD really appeals to me since I drive in PA 'mountains' a lot.

Did I just write 'sexy' and 'Subaru' in the same sentence??

Really? You can't fork 25k for a Subaru?
I don't know, I think you underestimate the products Subaru has been producing in the last 5 years or so. You can't fork 25k for a WRX?

Junkster, who can't picture himself paying 30k+ for a Subaru.

I wouldn't buy the WRX for $25K. Overpriced for what it is.

Just let you know who won the last year's (02-03) Car of the Year in Japan; JDM Accord, our TSX in Japan...

Green, who ordered a PWP TSX with 6MT & Nav on Spetember 20, and waiting for the delivery sometime right before Christmas. Just another month!

It says that the 0-60 will be faster than the Z, the 330i or the Boster S. Hmm... That AWD helps. I bet things will be different for the 1/4 mile with some of these cars.

Subaru claims a 0-60 of 5.5 secs.

Does the center dash look a lot like our CLS' or am I dreaming? Even the glovebox. The front seats look identical to ours.

I think I'd wait a year and see if they drop the boxer 6 into it. If they are getting 250 horse out of the 16 valve 4, imagine what they could do with the 6? I bet the home market does exactly that!

Yeah, the current model (at least when I looked at them in 2000) could accomodate 3 din units (I was planning on a H/U, a DSP and an in-dash 6 disc changer). seems they gone more in our direction with the angular facia.

if you're thinking subaru is going to bring a turbo'd H6 to the states anytime soon, you're going to be in for a long wait. the NA H6 may appeal to an older segment, but i for one, would not even remotely consider another legacy without flat four turbo as an available powerplant.

There are strong rumors of a 350HP turbo flat 6 version coming a year later. It has been spotted testing.

The trapezoidal shaped head unit surrounded by bowling ball [faux ebony or faux marble] trim, gated shifter, and door panel all remind me of the CL. It even borrows liberally from the charcoal & parchment colors for the CL interior.

It looks like they are going global with their 2.5 liter boxer 4 platform, contrary to what I said above back in September.

If these new press releases are anything like what happened with the Forester XT, then they are UNDERQUOTING the HP/torque of these engines. The Forester is a fast little car -- I'm sure the new legacy will follow suit. 0-60 in mid 5 seconds and 1/4 mile in sub 14 seconds stock is real!

The Legacy looks nice in pictures - I hope reality shows that it's a nice car too. We own the Subaru Forester XT and Acura CL-S. The Acura is a much more solid car. Subaru has obvious thinner glass, somewhat flimsier construction, and significantly more NVH then the Acura.

While people will debate here whether the Acura is a luxury car or not, the Subaru is definitely not. The leather and other adornments unfortunately are not enough to bring the car into a different class.

From what I can guess, the Legacy is meant to compete with the luxury/near-luxury class. It looks like Subaru is trying to expand their range from the econo-car with AWD to the near luxury market. Well see...

Subaru shows new 250 horsepower 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT

Detroit, Michigan - Subaru introduced the redesigned 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT now powered by a new 250-horsepower intercooled/turbocharged 2.5 litre boxer four cylinder engine. The 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT highlights a revised model line that will include the Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Sedan and Wagon, which feature additional luxury content. The Legacy 2.5i and Legacy 2.5i Limited models, both available as a sedan and wagon, are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre boxer engine with some improvements for 2005.

"The 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT is designed to provide the kind of `sensuous performance' that truly sets it apart from mainstream models," said Fred Adcock, Executive Vice President, Subaru of America, Inc. "Legacy 2.5 GT has been designed to give the driver the kind of power, performance and control that instills premium performance cars with distinct and memorable brand identity," he added.

The wheelbase of the 2005 Legacy has been increased from 104.3 inches to 105.1 inches and overall length has been increased by just under two inches for the sedan and wagon models. The sedan registers a coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.28 and the wagon 0.30. A functional hood scoop supplies outside air to the engine-mounted intercooler.

The 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT is powered by an intercooled and turbocharged 2.5-litre 4-cylinder boxer engine featuring Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing technology. The engine produces 250 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 250 lb-ft. of peak torque @ 3,600 rpm. The GT will offer a choice between a smooth-shifting 5-speed manual transmission or an all-new 5-speed electronic direct control automatic transmission with Sportshift for manual control when desired.
