Subaru: Crosstrek News

Press release...

The SUBARU XV CONCEPT is Subaru’s design concept car that defines a new generation of crossover vehicle, blending exceptional SUV practicality with a fashionable form. The key design concept is “Protren”. This word was coined from “Professional tool” and “Trendy design”. It expresses the integration of “authentic functionality as a professional tool” and “urban and stylish design”.

<Exterior Design>

・ The vehicle was engineered to blend the crossover-like commanding silhouette with a fashionable image in a single, modern package. Its contemporary looks and electrifying lines are guaranteed to turn heads, as its body exhibits the very solid, dynamic and independent styling so characteristic of all Subaru’s.
・ At the very front of the vehicle are standard design elements that are common to the Subaru stable, including
the hexagon grille, winged motif and sharply- and solidly-designed hawk-eye headlights.
・ The rear of the vehicle features the same hexagonal design as the front and more hexagons engraved into the
clear blue base under the license plate complement the consistent design theme.
・ To better embody the “Protren” theme, the wheel arch cladding offers the image of functionality, playful touch
and driving excitement, which is further enhanced with the black metallic highlights.
・ The aluminum alloy wheels are designed to combine a solid, intrepid form and a stylish appearance, while at the same time exhibiting a fashionable look suited to urban driving. Contrasting colors – silver spokes, black rims and clear blue center caps – are used intentionally to generate an exciting balance between quality and performance.
・ The exterior of the vehicle is splashed in riveting “Electro Yellowgreen”, resulting in a gleaming tinge
seemingly emanating from beneath the matte finish. The color embodies electrifying performance, and above
all excitement, to round off a tasteful, and at times potent, package.

<Interior Design>

・ “Silvery white leather” is used as the base material for the seats, which firmly envelopes passengers to provide a secure feeling. The use of sporty mesh in selected areas works to create a high quality, yet casual mood, and “yellowgreen” piping gives the interior a sporty and stylish finish.
・ A large multifunction display sits in the center panel. Three different displays – one each for navigation, car audio, and vehicle information are united in the design and touch panel technology expresses ease of use and can be operated intuitively.
・ The concept car features Subaru’s own advanced driving assist “EyeSight” system. An LCD monitor positioned between the two well-balanced and highly visible combination meters allows the driver to check the images captured with the EyeSight’s stereo cameras.

Impreza Outback, anyone? Considering the new Impreza hatch looks much more of an asphalt car than previous versions, I think a new off-road version like this is very possible.

It's the result of mating a 2012 Impreza and a Volvo XC70 Cross Country (link)

Interior looks nice though.

Subaru has always perplexed us by offering a more capable version of its compact Impreza hatchback and calling it an Outback Sport. The company is addressing the problem with its new XV, which will join the Impreza family next year in the U.S.

The model will feature the same engine and transmission as the new Impreza hatchback that's going on sale later this fall, but it has some differences.

The most notable will be the increased ground clearance from 5.7 inches on the regular Impreza hatch to 8.6 inches for the XV. A Subaru Outback has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, but a Jeep Wrangler Sport has 8.8 inches, so the XV might be the choice for off-road duties.

Of course, you'd be putting the cool-looking black aluminum wheels at risk. The rest of the car gets some unique bodywork but much less gray cladding than the last Outback Sport. On the XV, the gray cladding looks more attractive, especially around the lower front bumper.

Inside, the XV is similar to the next Impreza with less alteration.

We doubt the XV will be the first choice of Impreza shoppers, but at least it does more to stand out — especially in the orange paint color we see here — than the Outback Sport. Hopefully, fewer car shoppers will be confused by the Subaru models.

specs and appearance are meaningless...bottom line: subaru should have come out with this FIVE years ago! they have the right buyers, the right AWD system, the right fuel management system, and the right pricing points. you would think that subaru would have been heavily involved in this game well before hyundai or kia.

i mean, subaru knows that the demand is there...how many ppl buy the newly "raised" subaru outback bc it is the closest offering to a CUV? ....maybe subaru got so caught up in the success of the outback that they didnt feel the need to split the pot with another CUV.

Lovers of the Subaru WRX will hope the brand's latest, and remotely kindred, crossover is as raucous as the red-tailed tropicbird and as pertinacious as the Hawaiian petrel. We mention these species, the former of which is indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands while the latter is endemic, after going to Oahu's north shore to test the 2013 XV Crosstrek. We not only learned how limber the compact crossover is but also got sidetracked on the birds.

The Crosstrek goes on sale in September at a base price of $22,790 (including $795 in destination charges), adding new and affordable measures of sportiness and versatility to Subaru's lineup. Aimed at the Mini Countryman and Nissan Juke, the Crosstrek offers more overall capability and a different sense of style. It demonstrated perfectly nice manners on the John A. Burns Freeway, leading from Honolulu to Oahu's eastern shore, and on the spalled Kamehameha Highway tracing around to the north. The Crosstrek was quiet, rode fine, and offered an airy cabin. Yet, making an intermediate stop at the Kualoa Ranch, it clawed and scratched over shrubby, slippery slopes as readily as the mostly flightless Erckel's francolin, introduced from Africa in 1957.

Starting with the Impreza's platform, Subaru engineers, designers, and product planners came up with many improvements over that mere car. The marketing folks thought the result merited a new name over the global appellation of XV. (Besides which, XV was used more than 3 decades ago by a Super Bowl.) So Crosstrek was coined for North America. Of course this Pacific chain will use it, too.

Regrettably, we can't report any compelling news about the Crosstrek's powertrain besides 50-state PZEV status. A 2.0-liter opposed 4 with active valve control, the only engine offered, makes 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, as in the Impreza. With the 5-speed manual transmission, it returns 23/30 mpg. Most of the 12,000 to 15,000 buyers expected this year will choose the continuously variable transmission, which has steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters to emulate a 6-speed gearbox; the return is 25/33 mpg. With the CVT, there's only what we would call a "center" and no edges; in particular, when the nose is pointing uphill on steep terrain, mashing the accelerator is only slightly more rewarding than finding, to your dismay, that you've stepped on a nesting blue-faced booby. Instead of wearing driving moccasins, we were shod with sport sandals that were better suited for bounding over the serrated surfaces of Oahu's basaltic rocks, and perhaps for this reason we found the throttle tip-in to be disconcertingly abrupt, resulting in a jerky launch from standstill in the beachside towns.

Standing 4.1 inches taller than the Impreza, the Crosstrek hides behind a rather undistinguished aero-optimized face. Following the roofline's delicate arc is more rewarding. The rear is buttressed by anti-drag corners, featuring boxy shapes that prevent the air from eddying. While overall we sense little of the human hand in this form, the result still isn't bad-looking. Unique colors -- orange and khaki, along with 6 shared ones -- combine with the standard roof rails and fender mudguards to cue up sportiness. Machine-finished, 17-inch black wheels add to the effect. If you don't see a tailpipe, that's because it's tucked behind the rear bumper for a 27.7-degree angle of departure to complement the 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

Inside, there are few differences from the Impreza, but the comfortable seats of the Premium model do have distinctive fabric and stitching while the Limited comes with leather. The instrument cluster is endemic to the Crosstrek, and the cargo area is sealed by a sturdy liner. The seating position itself strikes a nice compromise between the petrel's cliffside perch and the shearwater's scraped cavity in the sand. Maybe more important than anything, for whatever squawking or squalling you prefer, hands-free calling is standard along with iPod and USB ports.

The rats that came with Polynesian colonists to the Hawaiian Islands no later than 1300 years ago, gobbling up eggs and helping to wipe out nearly 3 dozen bird species, would find nothing terribly tantalizing in the Crosstrek's recipe: all-wheel drive, restricted mass (no more than 3197 lb in the fully loaded Limited model), and a suspension of MacPherson struts and lower L-link in front with rear double-wishbones, coils at each corner, and stabilizer bars at both ends.

Nevertheless, the chassis is nimble, handling responses are predictable, and the stride is longer than expected. The average person who stuffs the cargo area with 1 medium kennel, the contents of 2 shopping carts, or 3 golf bags would be startled by the Crosstrek's off-pavement capability. 1 of the few letdowns is the electrically assisted steering, which could use a brightening facial of nightingale droppings, available at a resort on nearby Maui. Additionally, with the CVT, rather than creeping, the car bounds downhill, and we had to ride the 4-wheel disc brakes.

While Hawaii's native honeycreepers have had a terrible time dealing with civilization, the common myna, imported from India around the end of the Civil War, readily adapted to its new home, eating everything from fruit to reptiles. We see the Crosstrek filling a similar niche. As this new crossover demonstrates, omnivorousness has its virtues.

The Subaru Crosstrek will get a 2.5-liter engine option for the 2021 model year. Subaru of America CEO Tom Doll made the announcement at the NADA Live event during an auto dealers' convention in Las Vegas, according to a report from Automotive News.

"One of the things that our customers were telling us about the Crosstrek was it was maybe a little underpowered with the 2.0-liter engine," Doll said, according to Automotive News. "Well, the 2.5-liter engine will solve that problem."

The larger, more powerful engine will be available in a new Sport trim level of the Crosstrek. Buyers will also be able to order it on the range-topping Limited trim.

Doll didn't offer specifics about the new engine, but it's very likely to be the mill that's already available in models like the Forester, Legacy, and Outback.

The powerplant produces 182 horsepower (136 kilowatts) and 176 pound-feet (239 Newton-meters) of torque. In comparison, the 2.0-liter that's currently available in the Crosstrek makes 152 hp (113 kW) and 145 lb-ft (197 Nm), and the Hybrid offers a total system output of 148 hp (110 kW).

It's not clear specifically when the Crosstrek with the 2.5-liter engine would go on sale but look for deliveries to begin before the end of the year. The more powerful engine would likely come at a higher price.

When the second-generation Subaru Crosstrek arrived in 2018, Subaru gave it a little more power by increasing the 2.0-liter four-cylinder's output from 148 hp (110 KW) to the current 152 hp (113 kW). The company offered a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.

While the 2.5 is a welcome upgrade, I still wish they would stuff the FA20DIT from the WRX into it and call it the Crosstrek XT. Priced at around $27K (which should be reasonable since the Forester XT was just a $3800 upgrade over the regular model) and I would gladly line up to buy one.

I remember driving the XV with a 5MT when they first came out. Truck-like shift throws & woefully underpowered.

The 2.5 does well in the much heavier Outback, so I imagine it'll add quite a bit of pep to the Crosstrek, now they need to do the same to the Impreza Sport.

An XT would be interesting, and decent option for those wanting for a WRX HB.

Another problem I noticed when I tried to build one for fun when it first came out was that the manual transmission was only available on the base model.

Typical of Subaru, though.
I think the higher trim Crossteks can be had with the 6MT (base & Premium trims) now. But, good luck finding one in stock. And, I'm almost willing to bet the 2.5 Crosstrek will be CVT only.
The Impreza still gets saddled with the 5MT, IIRC.

There's no way they'll do this because they don't have to. The Crosstrek sells like hotcakes with the underpowered shitbox engine it has today. I'm beyond surprised that they're putting the 2.5 in at all lol.

Subaru quietly confirmed the Crosstrek will receive a bigger, more powerful 2.5-liter flat-four engine for the 2021 model year. It hasn't released technical details yet, and it kept its silence when Autoblog reached out for more information, but fuel economy figures reveal buyers who order the new four won't spend more time at the pump.

Searching for the 2021 Crosstrek on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website shows two engine choices: a 2.0-liter, which has been available since the model went on sale, and a 2.5-liter, which is new for 2021. The latter's fuel economy checks in at 27 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg on a combined cycle. For context, the 2.0 posts 28, 33, and 30, respectively. These are tiny differences that most motorists won't notice in real-world conditions, because fuel economy also depends on a variety of factors (like driving style).

Subaru's time-tested all-wheel drive system comes standard regardless of displacement, and the EPA data (which our eagle-eyed colleagues at Motor Trend first spotted) suggest the 2.5-liter will exclusively be offered with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The smaller flat-four's fuel economy figures drop to 22, 29, and 25, respectively, when it's bolted to the six-speed manual gearbox Subaru offers as standard.

As we reported earlier, the 2.5-liter will power a Crosstrek trim level named Sport that will join the range for the 2021 model year. The existing Limited model will receive the bigger engine, too, while the rest of the range will carry on with the 2.0-liter. The extra horsepower will carry a price premium, but pricing hasn't been announced.

Its horsepower and torque figures remain under wraps, too, but we're betting the Crosstrek will receive the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter already available in the Forester, the Outback, and the Legacy. It makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque in all three applications, numbers that will very likely carry over to the Crosstrek's specifications sheet. The 2.0-liter is rated at 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque.

Subaru will introduce the 2021 Crosstrek in the coming weeks. And, although the Impreza is very closely related to the Crosstrek, there's no indication it will also receive the 2.5-liter, though Subaru could surprise us.

For the 2021 model year, the Subaru Crosstrek is getting some mechanical and aesthetic updates, along with a new Sport trim.

The biggest difference you’ll find for 2021 is the addition of a new engine to the lineup. While the base and Premium trims will continue to use the 152-horsepower, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder carried over from 2020, the Sport and Limited trims will employ a new-to-Crosstrek 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. Borrowed from the Forester, and also found in the Outback, this naturally aspirated 2.5-liter provides 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. That power is put to the wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and Subaru’s torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system. The base and Premium trims, with the holdover motor, still come with either a six-speed manual or optional CVT.

In terms of efficiency, the new 2.5-liter offers 27 miles per gallon in the city, 34 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. The 2.0-liter still provides 22/29/25 mpg with the six-speed manual, or 28/33/30 mpg with the CVT — just one mpg better across the board than the 2.5.

That aforementioned Sport trim is new to the Crosstrek, and it has more to set it apart than just the engine. It’s the only version with the dual-mode X-Mode system, with Snow/Dirt and the additional Deep Snow/Mud setting. Standard X-Mode — which essentially offers better traction in snow and dirt — with hill descent control comes on the rest of the CVT-equipped Crosstrek trims. The Crosstrek Sport also gets unique visual touches to set it apart from the other trims, like more prominent wheel arch moldings, dark grey 17-inch alloy wheels, and a gunmetal finish on the grille, side mirrors and badges. Inside, it gets StarTex synthetic upholstery, yellow stitching and other yellow accents throughout the cockpit, and gunmetal and faux-carbon fiber accents. Sport Trim exterior paint colors include new Plasma Yellow Pearl and Horizon Blue Pearl finishes.

Speaking of looks, all 2021 Crosstrek trims (like the Limited pictured above) get refreshed grilles and an updated front bumper, with fog light insert covers on the base model, and other trims getting new fog light covers. Subaru has also updated the Crosstrek’s Eyesight driver assistance technology — standard on all CVT-equipped versions — with adaptive cruise control with lane centering, in addition to the suite’s other active and passive safety features. CVT-equipped Crosstreks also get a rear-seat reminder to check for children or pets when exiting the vehicle.

We haven’t learned pricing for the Sport trim, or finalized pricing — if it changes at all — for the rest of the Crosstrek lineup. We’ll know closer to the 2021 Crosstrek on-sale date late this summer.

The Subaru Crosstrek has always been a lifted wagon that ticked almost every box. The high ride height made it easy to get in and out of, the body cladding offered a rugged aesthetic, and with the EyeSight active safety system, the Crosstrek was cutting-edge smart at a reasonable price. This was a very, very good car that executed its mission pretty much perfectly, right up until you asked it to, well, go.

Yes, the Crosstrek has always been slow. Languid in its acceleration. Tortoise-like, even. Clearly there was some mix up at the factory, because in place of the 2.0-liter flat-four engines that were supposed to power these cars, there were four hamsters running around a giant wheel, trying and failing to get the compact wagon moving. For the 2021 Crosstrek, Subaru has ditched the wheel and given the rodents a generous and well earned retirement package, replacing them with an engine worthy of the Crosstrek’s otherwise-excellent personality. Finally.

Subaru didn't go so far as granting our wishes for a turbocharged Crosstrek WRX, but the thoughtful addition of 30 horsepower and 31 pound-feet of torque via the new 2.5-liter flat-four is exactly what this vehicle needed. Borrowed from the Forester, Legacy, and Outback, the 182-hp, 176-lb-ft four-cylinder is a fine engine in those vehicles, made even better by the Crosstrek's lower curb weight.

With 3,265 pounds to haul about (272 less than an equivalent Forester Sport and 399 less than an Outback Premium), this engine is a natural fit for the small Crosstrek. From a standstill, the lifted wagon now pulls with significantly more confidence, its larger engine making good use of the extra half-liter of displacement. Stand on the gas at 30 or 40 miles per hour and the revs shoot up as the torque pushes the weight rearward on the soft suspension – a sensation previous Crosstreks could only dream of – and the numbers in the digital speedometer start to climb.

But it's at freeway speeds where this engine makes the biggest difference, granting more grunt for passing and merging. It will happily hold steady at 70 miles per hour and still serve up some speed when called for – sudden passes, for example, no longer require a committee hearing and a supermajority among the hamsters. This is not a fast car by any stretch, but the 2.5-liter gives the Crosstrek exactly what it needs to make life easier on the driver.

This new engine is easy on the wallet, too, with the 2.5-liter demanding just a single point from the 2.0-liter's impressive fuel economy – Subaru quotes EPA estimates of 27 city, 34 highway, and 29 combined miles per gallon.

As with our experiences in the Forester and Outback, the 2.5 is also refined and quiet when cruising. It avoids buzzy harshness, instead opting for a pleasant soundtrack that only really wears on the driver when pushing too hard. Even under moderate acceleration, though, the Crosstrek keeps engine noise in check.

Automaker giveth, automaker taketh away, though. While the Crosstrek's six-speed manual transmission will soldier on in the base and Premium trims – which also retain the old, sluggish 2.0-liter engine – the 2.5-liter in the Crosstrek Sport and Limited pair only with a continuously variable transmission.

That said, Subaru's Lineartronic CVT is among the industry's best, exhibiting excellent manners in nearly every driving condition. We wish the 2.5-liter was available with the six-speed, but let's be honest, it's a minor miracle the six-speed Crosstrek even survived to 2021. As for that CVT, it's responsive and smart, managing the 2.5-liter's speed with ease and addressing sudden boots of throttle with predictable behavior.

The 2.5-liter engine is standard in the range-topping Limited, but the star of our drive was the new-for-2021 Crosstrek Sport. Thankfully, Subaru's designers weren't quite so exuberant in styling this as they were the Forester Sport – no orange accents here. Instead, the Crosstrek Sport adopts dark gray flourishes for the 17-inch wheels, grille, mirror caps, and badging. There are also trim-specific wheel arches, although these differences are subtle.

The Sport trim's cabin gets more expressive, adding the same water-resistant StarTex upholstery found in the Outback Onyx Edition, then tying the entire cabin together with bright yellow stitching. The stuff is on the dash, door panels, seats, and steering wheel – but while the shade itself is overwhelming, the designers exercised restraint. Sure, you get “CROSSTREK” stitched into the seats in a retina-searing color, but along with the metallic yellow accents on the steering wheel spokes, the degree of brightwork in this cabin is spot-on. You'll want to spend time here.

But that's not just because of the design or styling. The cabin remains a comfortable place, with supportive seats and an excellent seating position. The second row is roomy enough for two adults on a modest road trip and is nearly as easy to get in and out of as the front seats, while the cargo hold is cavernous at 20.8 cubic feet with the rear seats up. On road, the ride is cosseting and quiet with the soft, lifted suspension shrugging off even large bumps and imperfections, while little road or wind noise reaches the ear. It's more of the same off-road, although the Sport is the trim for folks looking to go further into the wild.

That's thanks to its enhanced X-Mode off-road drive settings. Every automatic-equipped Crosstrek gets a version of this system, but the Sport's is the most capable, offering dedicated drive modes for dirt and snow or for deep snow and mud. Also featured as standard on the Outback and as an option on the Forester, the dual-mode setup works in the same manner as the standard X-Mode – tap a button and enjoy optimized throttle and transmission settings, as well as a different split for the standard Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

Our route included plenty of dirt and gravel roads, made muddier by dousing rains leading up to our drive, but little of what we saw challenged the Crosstrek. The wagon's overall behavior was, as expected, sure-footed and confident, with ample grip on wet sections and a willingness to get silly when pushed toward some drifty antics on tighter bends. And when it is time to slow down and take things seriously, the dulled throttle response and tweaked gearing that came with X-Mode's Dirt/Snow setting made the car very easy to manage at low speeds (X-Mode only works to about 25 mph, after all).

At the same time, when back on the beaten path, the Crosstrek impressed with its high-speed stability and predictable cornering behavior. This wouldn't be our first choice for a partner on a canyon road, but the Crosstrek still managed to put a smile on our face with its composed handling.
In a smart move, Subaru retained the 2.0-liter engine to keep the Crosstrek's price approachable – at $22,245, just $100 separates the 2021 vintage's starting price from the 2020's. As for the $26,495 Sport, it really hits a sweet spot in the Crosstrek lineup, featuring much of the same equipment as the mid-range Premium, with two notable exceptions – the EyeSight system and its prerequisite CVT are optional on the Crosstrek Premium, at $1,350, but both come standard here.

In other words, the $3,200 increase over the 2.0-liter, $23,295 Premium is effectively $1,850. When it comes to such a transformative increase in power, that's a screaming value that still saves $1,500 compared to the range-topping Limited trim.

It's rare that mid-cycle updates can so thoroughly address a vehicle's main problem, but that's what's happened with the 2021 Crosstrek. Horsepower and torque mean confidence, and in the Crosstrek's case, the injection of this extra oomph makes for a vehicle that's both easier and less stressful to drive on American roads. That the extra oomph requires such small sacrifices in terms of cash and fuel efficiency doesn't hurt matters. In fact, we'd say the trade-off is pretty much perfect.

For the couple days I tested (and nearly bought) the 2.5 H4 Outback, I didn't think it felt underpowered. The same engine in the smaller/lighter/more nimble Crosstrek seems like a winner, at the expense on interior space.
Not a huge fan of the contrasting yellow on the interior, but really don't like the embroidery on the seats (on just about any car).

Yeah, but the CX30 won't get lesbian panties wet.

On a serious note, the Subaru AWD system is going to be more capable than the Mazda one (especially the Sport trim with Dual X-Mode), and it's got almost 2 inches of more ground clearance. But the other aspects...yeah Mazda is kicking names and taking ass. That 2.5T CX-30...if it came in a 6MT that would be the icing in the cake. The FB25 is a welcome upgrade to the FB20, but come on Subaru, is the FA20DIT too much to ask for ?

I am sure the Subaru's AWD is better than the FWD based AWD system in the Mazda... but if i were serious about off roading or have a need to do off roading.. neither of those will be my choice...

For day to day needs, CX-30 is significantly better in every single way... and it has 6AT.. instead of CVT... so that is a huge huge+

I don't think the average Crosstrek or CX-30 buyer is cross shopping the Y.

Starting MSRP:
Model Y: $46k (Long Range model)
Crosstrek: $23k (Crosstrek Sport)
CX-30: $31k (CX-30 Turbo)

You could just about buy the Subaru and the Mazda for the base price of the Y.

It's as if there are two SSFTSXs these days.

Cross shopping Teslas is the new ground clearance/all-season tires/HVAC vent placement.

Subaru unveiled the third generation of the Crosstrek in Japan, improving many aspects of the subcompact crossover that now wants to be called an SUV. The new global model drops the XV suffix, bringing modern styling and tech while being based on an updated version of its predecessor’s underpinnings

Subaru introduced the Crosstrek/XV in 2011 as a crossover version of the Impreza, with the second generation following in 2017. The third generation model is instantly recognizable, despite the fact that all body panels have been redesigned. Judging from its predecessors, it also serves as a preview for the next-gen Impreza, minus the plastic cladding.

In terms of footprint, the new Crosstrek measures 4,480 mm (176.4 inches) long, 1,800 mm (70.9 inches) wide, and 1,580 mm (62.2 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,670 mm (105.1 inches). Those figures are nearly identical to the outgoing Crosstrek, apart from the length which is extended by 15 mm (0.6 inches).

The front gets a larger hexagon grille that is connected to the slimmer and full-LED headlights, looking pretty similar to the rest of Subaru’s lineup, with somewhat of a Mazda-esque flavor. The plastic protective trim now occupies more space on the front bumper, enhancing the adventurous looks in combination with the fender add-ons and the pronounced roof rails.

The profile is an evolution of the same theme with a familiar windowline, muscular fenders, plus new designs for the 17-inch or 18-inch wheels. At the back, the smaller C-shaped LED taillights are better integrated within the bodywork, while the tailgate and the rear bumper are more sculpted than before. Similarly, the plastic cladding on the rear bumper has been increased, housing the diffuser-style skidplate and the reflectors.

Inside the cabin, the dashboard has been redesigned, adopting the large 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen already found in the WRX and the Levorg. The physical climate controls are gone and are now integrated within the touchscreen. Interestingly, Subaru didn’t add a digital instrument cluster, keeping the old unit with analog dials instead.

Depending on the variant, the seats are upholstered in fabric or leather with silver stitching. Finally, an anti-slip and scratch-resistant mountain-motif texture has been added to the side sill plates and the boot entrance. In terms of safety, Subaru added the new generation of its EyeSight system with a wide-angle monocular camera and improved software.

As we mentioned earlier, the Crosstrek sits on an upgraded version of the modular Subaru Global Platform which was originally introduced in 2016. Improvements on the structure with new types of adhesives are shared with the larger WRX and Levorg for greater rigidity and better NVH.

Under the bonnet we find the familiar 2.0-liter e-Boxer hybrid powertrain sending power to all four wheels through a Lineatronic CVT and Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system. The company didn’t announce any output figures but said that the powertrain has been slightly reworked for reduced vibration and noise. Additional engine options should be expected in the future, with reports about a smaller displacement engine replacing the old 2.0-liter boxer, as well as a carry-over naturally aspirated 2.5-liter for North America.

The market launch of the third-generation Subaru Crosstrek is scheduled for 2023. Sales will start from Japan and gradually roll out to other global markets. In the US, Subaru has recently announced the old model for the 2023 model year, so it is safe to assume that the new generation will arrive as a 2024 MY. Below, you can watch the official presentation which – unfortunately – is in Japanese without English subtitles.

So basically nothing new... It would be a great CUV if they put the WRX engine in it... Like HR-V, they just don't.

Given that they discontinued the Forester XT with the WRX engine, I don't think there's a chance we'll every see it in the Crosstrek

US-Spec Crosstrek

https://www.netcarshow.com/subaru/20...ek_us-version/

Subaru of America, Inc. debuted the all-new 2024 Crosstrek at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show. The 2024 Crosstrek offers improved performance, enhanced safety features and updated multimedia technology. The third-generation compact SUV also combines all-new exterior and interior designs with a new stiffer chassis to create a fun and comfortable driving experience both on and off-road.

The Crosstrek debuted 12 years ago and quickly became the fastest selling vehicle in history for Subaru of America, with more than a million units sold. In 2022, Crosstrek was the top performer by volume with 155,142 annual sales, achieving its best year ever. The success of the Crosstrek is thanks to its ample passenger and cargo space, comprehensive list of standard and available features, versatility and capability: all in a compact SUV at a competitive price.

For 2024, the Crosstrek will be available in Base, Premium, Sport and Limited trim levels and has a starting price of $24,995 (same MSRP as 2023 Base model equipped with Lineartronic® CVT).

Adventure and Versatility

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has been designed around the concept of utility and sportiness that lends itself to an active lifestyle. The 8.7-inch ground clearance for all Crosstrek models is greater than that of many SUVs, yet it maintains a comfortably low step-in height for both front and rear passenger entry.

Standard across the model line is a revised Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with a faster response time, more agile handling and better control both on- and off-road. Driver-selectable X-MODE with Hill Descent Control maximizes wheel control on slippery surfaces and steep inclines. Sport and Limited trims upgrade to dual-function X-MODE for increased capability in a wider range of conditions. All models feature Incline Start Assist, which briefly holds the vehicle while the driver pulls away from a stop on a hill.

The versatile Crosstrek features 60:40 folding rear seatbacks. With both seatbacks down, the cargo area can increase to 54.7 cubic ft. of useable space. The 41.0-inch-wide rear gate opening with low liftover height allows easy loading and unloading. Standard fixed cross bar mounting points (and standard raised roof rails on Premium and higher) add more cargo-carrying options for owners' adventures.

Performance and Handling

The Base and Premium are equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection SUBARU BOXER® engine producing 152-hp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. The Sport and Limited upgrade to a 2.5-liter BOXER engine delivering a responsive 182 hp and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. Standard on all trim levels is a Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with smoother and quieter performance. The Premium, Sport and Limited trims feature a manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters that allow the driver to control the transmission via eight pre-set ratios.

The SUV's drivetrain is further enhanced with standard Active Torque Vectoring and the SI-Drive performance management system. The Base and Premium come standard with 17-inch alloy wheels and the Sport and Limited upgrade to 18-inch alloy wheels.

The 2024 Crosstrek also receives a version of the WRX's dual-pinion electronic power steering rack, providing a more direct and natural steering feel and greater responsiveness.

All-New Exterior and Interior Design

The new exterior design communicates a ready-for-adventure spirit with a frameless hexagonal grille, compact headlights, a more sculptural body, and a broad-shouldered stance. Black wheel arch cladding and rocker panels provide a sharp contrast to the body color.

Several functional aerodynamic improvements enhance the SUV's performance and stability. An air outlet at the trailing edge of the front wheel opening allows air to exit from the wheel well more freely, contributing to reduced lift on the front tires and improved driving stability. Another air outlet added at each side of rear bumper reduces body sway due to air trapped behind the bumper.

The cabin benefits from an enhanced focus on the occupants and their interaction with the vehicle. A more supportive front seat design increases overall comfort and minimizes fatigue. A focused effort on reducing sounds within particular frequency ranges results in a quieter and more comfortable cabin. The modern interior design features a prominent center information display with highly visual controls as well as ample head and leg room and storage space. Rear dark-tint privacy glass is standard.

Structure and Safety

The Subaru Global Platform for the 2024 Crosstrek has been enhanced with 10-percent higher torsional rigidity. A full inner frame construction with stronger welding techniques and additional structural adhesive (from 26.2 feet to 88.5 feet) contribute to better body rigidity and less weight. These updates deliver an improved dynamic performance, smoother ride and quieter cabin.

Standard on all 2024 Crosstrek models is the latest version of the award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. The enhanced system operates more smoothly and quickly and under a greater range of conditions. These improvements are thanks to a wider field of view, updated control software and the addition of an electric brake booster. EyeSight can identify bicycles and pedestrians at intersections sooner and, when necessary, alerts the driver and applies braking to avoid collisions.

Additional available active safety features include Reverse Automatic Braking and Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Automatic Emergency Steering is now included on models equipped with Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Keep Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. This safety feature works with EyeSight and Blind-Spot Detection to assist with steering control to help avoid a collision within a lane at speeds less than 50 mph.

Standard Rear Seat Reminder is designed to help prevent child and/or pet entrapment by alerting the driver to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle.

The compact SUV has received safety awards from trusted organizations including the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The outgoing Crosstrek was named a 2022 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK (with optional EyeSight and Steering Responsive Headlights). This marks the 11th consecutive year Crosstrek has earned this award (2012-2022) and includes the highest possible rating of "Superior" for frontal crash prevention from IIHS. Subaru anticipates the all-new 2024 Crosstrek will continue to deliver exemplary safety performance.

Comfort and Convenience

All trim levels feature Remote Keyless Access; Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Individual Wheel Display; Steering Responsive LED Headlights with Automatic High Beam; Welcome Lighting; and power door locks, windows and side mirrors.

The vehicle's climate control system has been updated to focus on occupied seats (vs. entire cabin), for improved comfort and fuel economy. Dual-zone heating/cooling control is standard across the model line.

Additional available comfort features include a wireless phone charger in the center console and all-weather package with heated seats, mirrors and wipers.

Subaru In-Vehicle Technology

Standard on Crosstrek is a center information display with the SUBARU STARLINK dual 7.0-inch high-resolution touchscreens. The top screen controls smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity; AM/FM stereo; Rear Vision Camera; SiriusXM® All-Access Radio and Travel Link®; and HD Radio®. The bottom screen provides controls for climate and vehicle settings.

For the first time, the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system is available for Crosstrek. The 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen is equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto with full screen display. The multimedia system also works as a center information display with combination meter integration and on-screen controls for audio, climate and vehicle functions. Additional features include Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity; AM/FM stereo; rear vision camera; SiriusXM All-Access Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link (4-month free Platinum Plan); HD Radio; and over-the-air updates.

The 11.6-inch STARLINK Multimedia Navigation system is also available and includes voice-activated navigation powered by TomTom® and SiriusXM Travel Link (3-year free subscription). The navigation system has what3words (W3W) integration, an innovative location technology that provides a simple way to communicate precise locations using just three simple words.

The available SUBARU STARLINK Safety and Security Connected Services offer SOS Emergency Assistance, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification, Maintenance Notifications, Monthly Vehicle Health Report and Diagnostic Alerts, Stolen Vehicle Recovery Service, Vehicle Security Alarm Notification. Available convenience features include Remote Lock/Unlock, Remote Horn and Lights and Remote Vehicle Locator. New services for Crosstrek include Valet Mode, Trip Log and Driving Journal, and Remote Vehicle Configuration.

For the first time, Subaru Crosstrek production will occur in the U.S. The 2.5-liter Sport and Limited will be produced at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana and will begin arriving in Subaru retailers this summer. Production of the 2.0-liter Base and Premium will continue at the Subaru plant in Gunma, Japan and will be available at Subaru retailers in spring 2023.

Subaru of America revealed to the world the newest member of the Wilderness family, the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness, at the 2023 New York International Auto Show. Combining Subaru's renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with a revised drivetrain, standard X-MODE, elevated 9.3-inch ground clearance and exclusive body cladding, the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness is the most rugged and trail-capable Crosstrek ever.

With an already impressive list of standard features, the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness adds exclusive mechanical, design, and functional enhancements for added capability on the roads and trails less traveled. Critically, the rugged new model preserves the Crosstrek's renowned blend of SUV capability and car-like ride and handling. Numerous exterior and interior details make the Crosstrek Wilderness especially suited to carrying outdoor gear, even when wet or muddy.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is powered by a 2.5-liter direct-injection SUBARU BOXER® engine, with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. Subaru engineered the Crosstrek Wilderness drivetrain for better off-road performance by installing a revised differential gear ratio and retuned Lineartronic CVT. The 4.111 final drive ratio (vs. 3.700) improves the SUV's climbing ability and the new tuning for the CVT optimizes traction at low speeds and on slippery surfaces. Additionally, maximum towing capacity more than doubles to 3,500 lb. thanks to the addition of a transmission oil cooler.

Like all 2024 Crosstrek models, the Wilderness is equipped with the brand's award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control; Pre-Collision Braking; Pre-Collision Throttle Management; Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. In addition, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on the new model.

The Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness also comes standard with Automatic Emergency Steering. The feature works in conjunction with EyeSight and Blind-Spot Detection to assist with steering control to help avoid a collision at speeds less than 50 mph. Standard Reverse Automatic Braking adds an extra measure of safety in tight trail situations and while parking.

Design + Function = Unique Wilderness Style

Like the other Wilderness models, the Crosstrek Wilderness design blends trail-enhanced function with style that also turns heads. To visually communicate the more capable off-road performance, the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness adds exclusive styling with all-new front and rear bumpers, bold hexagonal front grille, larger wheel arch cladding, metal front skid plate, unique hex-design LED fog lights and an anti-glare hood decal in matte-black finish.

Subaru Wilderness badges are emblazoned on the front doors and rear gate. A body-color roof spoiler and black side mirrors with integrated turn signals complement the SUV's rugged look. Among the exterior colors offered, the Crosstrek Wilderness is available in Geyser Blue, which is exclusive to the Wilderness family.

The Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness features a versatile ladder-type roof rack system, with a 176 lb. dynamic load capacity and a 700-lb. static load limit, allowing safe use of larger roof-top tents. The roof rail design provides flexibility to fit a wide variety of carrying accessories, including Genuine Subaru Accessories available from Subaru retailers.

Off-Road Capability

Exclusive suspension components give the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness 9.3-inch ground clearance, more than a half-inch increase over the other Crosstrek models, which already were among the highest in their segment. Longer coil springs and shock absorbers provide the added ground clearance, while special tuning helps maintain dynamic performance.

Longer travel strokes for the front and rear shock absorbers help keep the tires in contact with rough surfaces, increasing vehicle stability. In addition, a longer dampening compression stroke helps increase absorption on rough road surfaces, providing a smoother ride. Even with its added ground clearance, the Crosstrek Wilderness maintains a low step-in height for ease of entry.

The approach angle is increased from 18.0 degrees in other Crosstrek models to 20.0 degrees on the Wilderness; the angle of departure increases from 30.1 to 33.0 degrees, and ramp breakover angle moves up from 19.7 to 21.1 degrees.

The Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness comes equipped with Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires for optimal performance in mud, gravel or snow. Mounted on exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in matte-black finish, the tires are embossed with raised white letters.

X-MODE for Maximum Control

The Crosstrek Wilderness is equipped with Subaru's driver-selectable dual-function X-MODE. The system offers Snow / Dirt and Deep Snow / Mud modes. To help maximize traction in varying conditions, each mode specifically optimizes the engine output and CVT ratio positions, increases the Active All-Wheel Drive engagement and enhances the control logic of the Vehicle Dynamics Control with Traction Control System. The X-MODE display features a Roll-Angle Indicator to help the driver judge potentially hazardous situations.

This technology also helps make Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness a nimble climber. When the X-MODE system is activated, Low Speed / Low Ratio Gradient Control is automatically put on standby to sense when the vehicle is traveling on a steep incline at low speed. When it does, the system shifts the CVT to its lowest ratio (4.066:1). Combined with the Wilderness model's lower differential ratios, the system also enhances rough off-pavement, low-speed drivability over rocks and other situations that require repeated on/off accelerator usage.

Standard Hill Descent Control will automatically engage individual wheel braking control on downgrades when the vehicle is driven under 12 mph with the accelerator pedal pressed less than about 10 percent, thereby helping to control vehicle speed. Active Torque Vectoring, standard on all 2024 Crosstrek models, enhances handling stability on road or trail.

An Interior designed for the Outdoors

Inside, Subaru equipped the Crosstrek Wilderness cabin for comfort and durability. The seats are upholstered in comfortable, water-resistant Subaru StarTex® material that features the Subaru Wilderness logo embossed in the front headrests. Bold copper colored contrast stitching accents the interior, complementing the anodized copper-finish accents on the shifter, gauge meter rings and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Upon entering the vehicle, the driver is greeted with a Wilderness logo appearing in the meter display at start-up.

Black pillar trim, assist grips, overhead console, and headliner pairs well with the Gunmetal Grey trim used on the dash, doors, and shifter plate. Standard all-weather floor mats feature a unique Wilderness design. In the cargo area, a removable water-resistant rear cargo tray protects the load floor from wet, muddy gear tossed in the back. The rear gate comes equipped with an LED light for better nighttime visibility.

The Wilderness comes standard with the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system. The 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen is equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ with full screen display. Additional features include Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity; AM/FM stereo; rear vision camera; SiriusXM® All-Access Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link® (4-month free Platinum Plan); HD Radio®; and over-the-air updates.

The multimedia system also works as a center information display with combination meter integration and on-screen controls for audio, climate, and vehicle functions. The Wilderness is also equipped with a wireless phone charger in the center console.

Competitively Priced Adventure Compact SUV

Starting at $31,995, the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness comes with an extensive list of standard features including Keyless Access with Push-Button Start; steering responsive LED headlights; SI-Drive engine performance management system; and Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire display and automatic individual wheel ID registration. The SUV is also equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports in the front and rear of the center console; dual zone automatic climate control; and the All-Weather Package with heated front seats, windshield and exterior mirrors.

An available option package for Wilderness includes Power Moonroof; 10-way power driver seat with 2-way lumbar support; and a Harman Kardon® 10-speaker system with 432-watt equivalent amplifier for an MSRP of $2,270.

The 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness will begin arriving in Subaru retailers in fall of 2023. The Wilderness will be built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana along with the other two Crosstrek 2.5-liter models, Ascent, Legacy and Outback.

I ended up with an Outback Wilderness, I'm sooooo glad I didn't wait for the Crosstrek Wilderness, it's a nice setup but just too small of a car... And they didn't bring the 2.4L Turbo 😒

2.4T in the Crosstrek would be fun
Might cut into CVT WRX sales though
