DETROIT -- General Motors might be calling it a concept, but what you see with the Saturn Aura is what you'll get.
The mid-sized sedan won't look much different when it hits the streets in summer 2006.
"It's a sneak peek," says Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak, "but a pretty close one."
Saturn will push the Aura as a preview of what Saturn is capable of doing with a sporty sedan. With its replacement for the discontinued L series, Saturn could use the confidence boost.
The final Saturn L series was built at GM's Wilmington, Del., plant June 17. Production of the car began in May 1999. About 406,300 were built over five years.
When the division was launched, Saturn envisioned selling 500,000 vehicles annually. Saturn sold 212,017 vehicles in the United States in 2004, down 21.8 percent from 2003.
Saturn hopes the investment it's making in the exterior and interior of the Aura make this sedan a different story.
"We believe it has the potential to attract today's Accord or Passat buyer," says GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz.
From the outside, the Aura features the new Saturn design direction. The look, including a front fascia with a distinctive mesh grille and circular fog lamps, will first appear in a production vehicle with the Sky roadster that goes on sale in late 2005 or early 2006. The Aura also features 19-inch polished alloy wheels pushed to the corners.
Under the hood, Saturn has included a 250-hp 3.6-liter double overhead cam engine with variable-valve timing teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual tap up/tap down shift controls.
But inside the vehicle is where the Aura will make the largest leap.
"The interior is a bold step," says Greg Bellopatrick, vehicle chief engineer for GM's mid-sized vehicles. "It's a definite reflection of where Saturn wants to go. And when you look at the mid-sized market, the price of entry is products that are premium. That's where we think the Aura will be."
The interior includes Rustica leather seats designed to resemble expensive furniture, as well as two-tone door and seat inserts. There is heavy use of metallic and chrome trim, as well as backlit instrumentation and a four-panel sunroof.
GM design chief Ed Welburn says his team of interior designers borrowed materials from other industries, including some of the best handbag companies in Italy.
"We made interiors a high priority," Welburn says. "This proves it is a new direction from many aspects."

“The Aura is a sneak peak at a new generation of emotionally compelling Saturn vehicles,” said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn general manager. “It's the kind of vehicle that perfectly supports Saturn's firm commitment to provide great customer service combined with equally outstanding vehicles.”
The new face of Saturn
The exterior styling of the Saturn Aura is fluid, muscular and powerful, with European design cues and a sense of technical harmony.
“As is the case with the Saturn Sky, Aura features sculpted surfaces and flowing horizontal lines, creating a dynamic feel – a sense of power about to be unleashed,” said Clay Dean, GM director of vehicle design.
Up front, the sedan features bold p rojector-beam trapezoidal headlamps flanked by a new rendition of the Saturn chrome bar, which features the division’s logo displayed more prominently. The front fascia has a distinctive mesh grille and circular fog lamps. Horizontal hood extractors punctuate the concept’s styling up front, while also helping to cool the engine compartment.
The Saturn Aura’s profile is also muscular and powerful, with 19-inch, polished alloy wheels pushed to the corners, resulting in short overhangs. Accenting the wheels and low-profile Z-rated tires are muscular wheel flares, along with side rockers with rearward-swept feature lines and a high belt line. Side markers reflect the vehicle’s European influence.
At the rear of the vehicle, the jewel-like LED taillamps contribute to the vehicle’s four-corner lighting design. Other key styling elements include the rear fascia, with a trapezoidal central exhaust, chrome bar and rear spoiler.
“The Saturn Aura epitomizes GM’s global design approach to brand revitalization. Seven GM Design studios from around the world used technology that allowed them to contribute to product designs that will make up Saturn's new portfolio. The result is seamless connectivity between the exterior and interior,” Dean added.
Inviting, comfortable and spacious interior
“The interior of the Saturn Aura reflects our vision of future Saturn vehicles, combining sophisticated elegance with plenty of passenger comfort. The highly refined details in this concept convey a sense of craftsmanship and affluence,” said Dave Rand, GM executive director of interiors.
The Saturn Aura features a long wheelbase that – in addition to providing a comfortable, smooth ride – delivers a great deal of passenger room, especially in the rear seat. The vehicle’s interior roominess is heightened by the large windshield – a result of the steeply raked A-pillar – and the p anoramic roof, which features four sliding glass panels to create a convertible-style open-air driving experience.
Rustica leather seats provide firm and supportive comfort and are designed to resemble expensive furniture. To further accentuate its upscale character and enhance tactile feel, the door insert, seat insert, shift knob and steering wheel are all suffused in the same Rustica leather.
The Saturn logo medallion on the steering wheel, the instrument cluster, the center vent and the window and door switches are all backlit. This concept vehicle also features theater dimming, ambient overhead lighting and illuminated door handles.
Metal to the pedals
“The Saturn Aura is a modern interpretation of luxury,” Rand said. “For the interior, we made extensive use of metallic accents that complement the leather to enhance the upscale feel of the environment.”
Chrome sill plates with the Saturn logo, light titanium-finished knobs and buttons for the heating and cooling system, radio and on the door panels convey a sense of luxurious precision. A metallic overlay is also incorporated into the brake and accelerator pedals.
Further accentuating this vehicle’s modern character is the instrument panel center stack, which features an o range cluster ring that encircles all three gauges.
Sporty character
Backing up the sporty appearance of this vehicle is a 250-horsepower 3.6L DOHC V-6 engine with variable valve timing. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual tap up/tap down shift controls. Safety performance is provided by roof rail-mounted head curtain side-impact air bags, side-impact thorax air bags, four-wheel ABS with traction control and StabiliTrak, GM’s electronic stability control system.
The Aura also features OnStar’s Gen 6.1 system. With 3 million subscribers, OnStar is the nation's leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services using the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite network and wireless technologies. With Gen 6.1, GM OnStar subscribers can interact with OnStar's voice recognition system in Spanish, French or English. With the push of a button an OnStar advisor can change the system to allow the subscriber to interact with the system in their preferred language. Other core OnStar services are stolen vehicle location assistance, remote door unlock, roadside assistance, emergency services and automatic crash notification.
GM is the only automotive manufacturer committed to offering a full range of vehicles with safety protection before, during and after a collision. All OnStar-equipped vehicles come with Automatic Crash Notification. If air bags deploy, the system sends a signal to a highly trained OnStar Emergency Advisor, who contacts the vehicle to see if help is needed, and can contact an emergency responder to send for help. In many cases the occupants are severely injured and cannot speak for themselves. OnStar’s GPS unit allows Advisors to tell emergency responders the vehicle’s location. OnStar responds to at least one air bag deployment in the US or Canada every hour.
Additionally, the Aura features the GM-exclusive Advanced Automatic Crash Notification system. The AACN system detects collisions, even rollovers, regardless of whether air bags deploy. AACN also transmits other crash data, such as the direction of impact force, the number of and which air bags deployed and the maximum change of impact velocity, so that emergency responders are more prepared with this critical information before they arrive at the accident scene.

You know that there is a huge change at Saturn when premium (almost "un-detuned") engines from Cadillac are used.

Not a big GM fan here but I like it. The last GM car that I ever considered (before the CTS-V) was the Olds Aurora. Nice job. With 6 fwd speeds, an SS tranny would be nice though. Mainly, I just hope GM comes through on the QC.

That is a homerun if the car looks like that on a dealer's lot. That leather is better than anything I've seen in a non-Caddy in a long time and that car is teh hottness.
With the Aura and the Sky, Saturn looks to be back in a BIG way.

WWOOAAAHHHHH!!! This is a huge, gigantic step up. I'm now confused with Saturn's placement within GM... I thought they were going to remain, a no haggle, budget line (with better products, though)... But this car gets the GOOD engine. Buick doesn't even get the 3.6L DOHC, but Saturn does? WTF. Good for them. It looks good from all sides, and it's the best looking use of the Epsilon (except maybe the G6). I like way the new Saturn face came out on this car. They need to keep the interior as close to the concept's as possible, and they may very well have a hit on their hands.
... The fact that they're using this engine and not the new 3.4L or 3.9L pushrods is really fucking my head up. And what's up with this car getting a 6SP auto while the CTS and STS uses a 5SP with the same engine? Caddy, and then Buick should have first dibs on the tranny GM and Ford codeveloped...

I don't know... the 19s may go but the production may have 18s. The leather may stay too. GM's not going to waste this engine on an economy car.

WOW! Another great concept interior (except for the colors..tan & green)...perhaps GM will now start to build great interiors.....let's hope it stays close to the concept when it reaches production.

Also the 6 speed auto is used in the STSV. Plus more Caddys and Buicks will get it. It's just that it just came out. Dont forget, this car is 1.5 years away. By then you'll see a ton of GM cars wear a 6 speed automatic.

The only problem with these Opel rebadged cars is that they look totally out of place in the Saturn dealers' showroom floors. Can you imagine walking into the showroom...you basically have the Saturn ugly cars (Vue, L-Series, Ion) and then you have this, which looks waaayy better.

Looks nice! I'm shocked. Ii expected another boring Saturn to be shown. I'll make sure to visit this one at the autoshow.
Rear end looks like 1st gen CL. From the side it looks like an Audi. And I'm not sure about the front.
