Possible "sub-NSX" acura coupe concept revealed at Detroit auto show
http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=470639
Now on to the mysterious portion of our headline. Before we share this, we can't emphasize enough that everything you are about to read is based upon a completely unsubstantiated rumor. Furthermore, if this rumor is correct, it could spoil a surprise, so you may not wish to read any further if you like surprises. We don't even know what to think of it ourselves because we're hearing about it so late and it seems a little bit too good to be true. So PLEASE treat it as such and don't be surprised if it proves to be 100% false. Anyhow, with all these disclaimers in place, we very recently heard from unnamed sources that there are plans for Acura (or possibly Honda) to surprise everyone in Detroit this year by revealing a never-before-seen concept vehicle. According to the rumor, this concept is said to be a mid-engined, V6 sports car, and though the details are sketchy, from what little we've heard, (if there are in fact plans for such a concept) we would assume that this could possibly be a concept of the rumored "sub-NSX" sports car that some of the Acura dealers have been mumbling about for a year or two. We don't know if this rumor even has a 50/50 chance of being true because it would seem odd that Acura (or Honda) would deflect attention away from their official Detroit intros, but it's not unprecedented. Of course we'd love it if such a concept were shown, but until we get some sort of other confirmation, we're playing it safe and straddling the fence on this one. We've contacted Honda representative Sage Marie and he stated that there are no such plans for Honda at the Detroit show. We also left a voicemail with Acura representative Mike Spencer, and have not heard back from him yet. We will provide updates if we learn anything else.

If it were true, think its pretty dumb that Honda would build another rwd platform that would again only be used for a sportscar rather than one that could be shared with multiple cars/crossovers.

I hope I am proven wrong.

Don't know why TOV even reported it, what do they want to be the first to have had the rumor if its true? They shoulda just posted up the car when information became available instead of starting something that may be nothing.

I'm skeptical as well. I hope I'm wrong.

If TOV thinks the RSX is a goner but Edmunds says "it'll be redesigned on the Civic platform with a larger engine" ... I'm inclined to believe TOV.

I thought I wanted a 4 seat coupe, don't think I'd want a mid engine sports car for a daily driver. I assume that probably means it would be a 2 seater?
But kinda makes sense, since most people are happy with sporty sedans, and they may sell more sport cars than coupes that are copied off a sedan, if the rumor is true anyway.

Whats the point of a surprise at a HUGE auto show. The consumers at the show may be surprised, but these are really press events for getting new products into the media fast and high priority. Hiding a car from the media/detroit debut list to make it a surprise makes no sense. 2nd I don't think Acura has anything up their sleeve that could steal the show as a surprise, like a 400hp mid engine 47k rwd sportscar.

Period.
The 2007 Infiniti G3xC will be shown in april and will probably be available later this year.
I find it funny that chrysler/chevy are showing cars that won't be available till 2009
When the New Mustang was shown, I had contemplated waiting to by it, but I needed a car in October 2002, not 2 years down the road.

If they do a rwd mid engine sportscar it will sell well, but like 123456speed said, alot of us CL guys are looking for a 2+2 coupe, that we can use as a daily driver.

This has been a strong rumor for over a year.
In addition, Jeff has numerous sources who have turned out to be quite accurate.
Examples: Pilot, Ridgeline, SH-AWD, Civic's two level dash etc etc etc

If the RSX dies, the true non-lux sport coupe market dies with it. The Mustang is more 'muscle car' and the Civic Si and Scion tC are economy car pocket rockets. The Integra/RSX has been the last survivor of many cars, i.e. Probe/MX-6, 240SX, Prelude, Integra, etc

Looks like H/A is looking for the civic si to take over the roll of the sport coupe, and hopely this will be something to fill the void created by the discontinuation of the CL... It will be moving upscale, like Acura has done with the rest of the brand...
Mid engine usually means RWD, so it'll be interesting to see what will come of this rumor...
I think I could live with a 2 seater as a daily driver, now that I've thought about it for a bit

The RSX moved away from the third-gen Integra, which had more of a 90s coupe profile. The RSX really embraces a more blocky, shorter hatch look.
Honda is becoming more conventional with its bodystyles and its marketing. Acura will move upmarket, still being about sport, but more about luxury and exclusivity. As long as it means Acura will get a real lux coupe, then I guess it's for the better.
