Why Porsche has to produce an M5 competitor - - Source: Autospies
Dear 001,
Just got off the phone with my mole inside Porsche who told me the four door 911 sedan is guaranteed to come to market by 2007.
I know you're going to ask why do they have to do this car?
Plain and simple, the classic 911 doesn't have the stuff to convert customers fleeing the brand for E55's, M5's and others, even with the intro of the 997.
And it's not Porsche's fault.
Most people need the extra room that the 4-door super sedans offer and there is virtually no performance tradeoff.
Especially, American customers.
In my opinion, the car makes even more sense to combat the departing customers than the Cayenne.
Finally, there's one last reason.
Porsche's brand suffers by not being able to live up to their slogan of "There is no substitute". Frankly, in today's market there are MANY substitutes.
I know I would much rather have an M5 than a 997.
That said, the business cases are strong and you can take it to the bank that it's coming soon.
Porsche doesn't like to be in second place to anyone.
And to make matters worse, is that MB and BMW have been rubbing their faces in the sand which isn't sitting too well with Porsche execs.

Fine if they have to make it to stay in business do it (like the cayenne). But why the hell would you just chop shop your bread and butter car. It was bad enough when the boxter looked too much like the 911 but now a sedan?
PLus i really think it looks pretty crappy. Poor form

Porsche is to bring out a four-door GT with V8 and V10-Motor in 2009 under the model name Panamera .
The concept will be presented by autumn at the IAA to the public.
After Cayman for the Boxster Coupé (debut on the IAA in the autumn) now Panamera for the fourth Porsche line.
The Stuttgart sportscar manufacturers protected both names on the same day (15.1.2004) at the German patent office.
At the latest by autumn this year Porsche wants to present its concept for the fourth line.
The most important first in brief:
It's a four-door and four-seated front engine car with rear- and all-wheel drive, V8 and V10-engines with a range from 340 to over 600 PS.
The prices are to be settled between 100.000 and 150.000 €.
Annually 20,000 units are focused.
The assembly in Leipzig is to begin 2009.

Porsche Panamera: Concept version of automaker's fourth model line due this fall - - By GREG KABLE - - Source: Autoweek
Porsche’s anticipated fourth model line has a name: Panamera. Registered by Porsche at the same time as the Cayman moniker it is applying to the upcoming Boxster-based coupe, the new name is expected to grace a concept version of the car, which insiders describe as a combination of coupe and sedan, at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
Due out in 2008, the Panamera has been conceived as successor to the 928. Designed with space for four adults, it is also tipped to come clothed in a four-door body in a move that will pitch it into direct competition with cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Maserati Quattroporte.
Secrecy surrounds the mechanical basis for the new car, though the Stuttgart rumor mill suggests Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking has forged links with Volkswagen on a new rear-wheel-drive platform program in a move similar to that undertaken with the Cayenne and Touareg. Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder is interested in adding a new rear-wheel-drive model to the Volkswagen lineup between the Passat and Phaeton, and after the recent breakdown in talks with Maserati, it seems additional cooperation with Porsche may be in the cards.
Power for the new car is set to come from the same 4.5-liter V8 engines as those offered on the Cayenne. They include a naturally aspirated version with 340 hp and a turbocharged unit with 450 hp. An even more powerful model with more than 500 hp is also in the pipeline. Up to 20,000 examples of the Panamera are expected to roll annually from Porsche’s Leipzig factory in Germany, where it will be produced alongside the Cayenne.
