Pope Benedict XVI Takes Delivery of BMW X5

5th Vatican BMW

Following an audience with the Pope, the BMW Group yesterday handed over a BMW X5 to the Holy Father. Dr. Michael Ganal, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, and Marco Saltalamacchia, President of BMW Italy, represented the company at the official reception.

Michael Ganal: "We are proud to be able to provide Pope Benedict XVI with a BMW car.“

The BMW X5 increases the number of BMW vehicles owned by the Vatican: in addition to a fleet of BMW C1 two-wheelers, the official Vatican vehicle fleet has two more BMW automobiles: a BMW 525ix and a BMW 740i.

The Pope taking monetary gains from BMW is just sad. WTF does he care when the Vatican has excessive amounts of money to deal with this...

While its not uncommon for high up religious figures to drive nice cars.....any religion.

I don't know what the Pope is going to do with the X5, unless its just for general Vatican use (which I would imagine).

Its not as if the Pope is going to jump in and drive down the street to get a sandwich.

I don't think the Pope is really in that category, maybe local priests who lose sight of who they are, but I really find the top pic disgusting- almost like something from a tabloid.

In reality it seems the Pope is just accepting the car on behalf of the Vatican to add to what they call their fleet of BMW's - which includes a 525ix, 740i, and BMW motorcycles.

Why then do people still have to give money to their respective church during mass then? I recall the Catholic church they always ask for donations.

I forgot though, the Vatican doesn't purchase these vehicles, BMW gives it to them for no charge. I guess BMW now has their blessings from the holy father.

Isn't it ironic that the Vatican endorses a German/Bavarian car company and not an Italian one? After all Pope Benedict XVI is German.
