2+2 =/= SL, IMO.
I believe the W113 (63-71) offered a 3rd 'jump seat' behind the main seats, but that doesn't truly count either.

Then t here was the SLC in the C107, which was a fixed roof 2+2, but not a true SL.

The SL and AMG GT were both two seat cars, no back seat. That said, didn't they make an S Class Cab that was a 2+2?

All of the sedan (C,E,S) cabrio variants are/were 2+2. IMO, the GT & SL should stay true roadsters.

Last seen cold weather testing in Sweden and confirming plans to sell the car exclusively as an AMG, Mercedes has now unveiled the interior of its next-generation SL. Appearing to blend new-age tech with older, more analog design elements, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL's interior is said to take inspiration from the cabin of the legendary 300 SL Roadster and is described by its creators as "hyperanalog."

The first thing you'll likely notice is the big 11.9-inch, portrait-oriented center display running MBUX that's a lot like the ones seen in the new S- and C-Class sedans. This being a convertible, however, the SL's screen is adjustable and can be moved to a more vertical, upright position meant to cut down on reflected sunlight during top-down driving.

That display is surrounded by a cabin that's appropriately plush and appropriately Mercedes. Turbine vents, gorgeous metal Burmester speaker grilles, copious ambient lighting with 64 different color choices, luxuriously stitched leather, and the newest-generation AMG steering wheel all make appearances.

Not only is the new SL's cabin pretty but it's also more practical than before. Reverting to a 2+2 setup, the car will be able to seat four, something the SL hasn't been able to do since the generation that went away in 1989. All three generations of SL since then (the R129 of the '90s, the R230 of the '00s, and the R231 of today) have all been two-seaters.

Previously confirmed as the very first SL to be available with all-wheel drive, the full 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL will unveil later this year.

I still hold, that 4 seats =/= SL.
Also, those back seats looks to be usable only if you don't have legs.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL, the new edition of an icon, returns to its roots with a classic soft top and sporty character. At the same time, the luxurious roadster as a 2+2 seater is particularly suitable for everyday use and puts its power down on the road with all-wheel drive for the first time. High-tech components such as AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active anti-roll stabilization, rear-axle steering, and optionally available AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system are available. In combination with the Handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, this results in a driving experience of the highest order. As a consistent Performance Luxury model, Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach has developed the SL completely independently. Two models with AMG V8 engines will kick off the market launch.

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its debut in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

The successful racing car was followed in 1954 by the 300 SL production sports car (W 198), which is called the "Gullwing" because of its unusual doors. In 1999, a jury of motoring journalists voted it the "Sports Car of the Century." Other highlights of the model history include the "Pagoda" (W 113, 1963-1971), the evergreen R 107 (1971-1989), which was built for 18 years, and its successor, the R 129, which is considered an automotive sculpture because of its striking wedge shape. The abbreviation "SL" to this day thus stands for one of the few genuine automotive icons in the world.

In the decades-long development history from full-blooded racing car to open-top luxury sports car, the new Mercedes-AMG SL now sets another milestone. It combines the sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence that characterize modern Mercedes models.

"The SL is an icon: For almost 70 years, the distinctive sports car has delighted Mercedes customers of every generation around the world. With the rebirth of the roadster from Mercedes-AMG, the new SL more than ever remains the symbol of this timeless fascination," says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales

"The new SL combines the sporty genes of the original SL with the driving performance typical of AMG. At the same time, it offers luxury and comfort at the absolute top level. This combination is unique in the sports car segment and is also reflected in the interior - where the highest levels of comfort and quality meet the right helping of sportiness. The high-quality combination of analogue world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes it clear that the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era," says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH

"With the new SL, we have created a repositioning of the iconic SL design. The expressively modelled exterior conveys a light and purist impression and brings sensual beauty and extravagant design into perfect harmony," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group

"We at Mercedes-AMG consider it a great honor to have had the privilege to develop the new edition of this sports car icon. When we were tasked with the overall development of the new SL, we were able to start from scratch without building on an existing structure. We are proud of the result, which once again demonstrates the high level of engineering expertise in Affalterbach. The new 2+2 concept combines agile driving dynamics with a high level of comfort and unrestricted suitability for everyday use," says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH

With its exciting design, state-of-the-art technology and outstanding driving characteristics, the new Mercedes-AMG SL sets standards in the luxury sports car segment. The exterior design fascinates with a perfect triad: it combines the modern Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity with the sportiness typical of AMG and characteristic details. The two power bulges on the hood are just one of numerous features reminiscent of the first SL generation. The interplay of light and shadow makes the overall appearance visually light and low. It is clear at first glance that the new SL has returned to its sporty roots.

Following the two variants with V8 engines, Mercedes-AMG presents the SL 43 a technically innovative entry-level model of the newly developed roadster icon. Under the bonnet of the open-top 2+2-seater with fabric soft top is an in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with two litres displacement that provides the befitting propulsion. This is the first time in the world that an electric exhaust gas turbocharger is being used in a production vehicle. This technology comes from Formula 1™. The system in the SL 43 is a direct derivative of the development successfully used by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team for many years in the premier class of motorsport. The new form of turbocharging guarantees particularly spontaneous throttle response across the entire rev range, thereby offering an even more dynamic driving experience while increasing efficiency at the same time. The turbocharger is operated via the 48-volt electrical system, which also feeds the belt-driven starter-generator (RSG). As a result, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 has an output of 280 kW (381 hp) and a maximum torque of 480 Nm, plus an additional short-term boost of 10 kW (14 hp) from the RSG in certain driving situations. The new entry-level model in the SL family also shines with extensive standard equipment. In addition, numerous options that enhance comfort and safety offer a wide range of possibilities for individualisation.

In the 70 years of its development history, the SL experienced the transformation from a thoroughbred racing car to an open-top luxury sports car - and has long enjoyed legend status, not least for this reason. The new Mercedes-AMG SL now marks another milestone in the model's history. It combines the distinct sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence of the modern Mercedes-AMG models. As the new entry-level model in the series, the SL 43 is a particularly good example of this. It is the world's first series-produced vehicle to feature an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This technology comes directly from Formula 1™ and solves the trade-off between a small, fast responding supercharger that nevertheless achieves comparatively low peak power and a large supercharger with high peak power that only responds delayed. With its innovative engine concept, the new entry-level model of the 2+2-seater roadster is aimed more at particularly tech-savvy buyers. With its combination of a comparatively light four-cylinder engine on the front axle and rear-wheel drive, the SL 43 also displays distinctly discrete handling characteristics.

"In its long history, the SL has repeatedly set technological milestones. For example, while the legendary 300 SL Gullwing in 1954 was the world's first series-produced passenger car with direct petrol injection, the new Mercedes-AMG SL 43 is now the very first series-produced vehicle with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. With this technology, the SL also has an outstanding performance range in its entry-level version. This means that our seemingly smallest SL combines the typical AMG Driving Performance with luxury and comfort at the absolute top level. What's more, with this innovative engine we are undoubtedly also appealing to a wider clientèle", says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

"The electric exhaust gas turbocharger is a fascinating example of the extensive transfer between Formula 1 technology and the development of production vehicles. In implementing this in conjunction with our powerful M139 four-cylinder, we were also able to draw on the enormous wealth of experience of our colleagues at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains. The technology increases agility and thus driving fun, while at the same time improving the efficiency of the drive system. We are pursuing ambitious goals with a view to our electrified future. Innovative components such as the electric exhaust gas turbocharger help us to achieve this", says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

I'm not generally a fan of any matte finish auto colors, MB no exception.
Gimme that SL43 in Iridium Silver & I'm a happy camper.
First 4cyl SL since the 190SL if my memory serves.

SL's look fantastic in black, red, white, silver, etc. Something classy and elegant, not loud and in your face. Save that ish for Porsches and Lambos.

I'm sure a lime green Black Series, or AMG-S, or something like it is in the works.

I saw the new SL 55 and SL 63 earlier this week. The soft top takes away from the car It didn't look as wide as the predecessor either. It was cool to see, but I was honestly a bit underwhelmed.

To mark the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Mercedes-AMG has presented a special model of the SL63 4MATIC+. It reflects the look of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E PERFORMANCE racing car. The colour graduation from high-tech silver metallic to obsidian black metallic is inspired by the model from the top class of motorsport. The same is true of the star pattern on the vehicle flanks and the PETRONAS-coloured contrasts: these can be found on the front apron, side sill panels and rear diffuser. Added to this are 21-inch AMG 10-twin-spoke forged wheels in a matt black finish with PETRONAS-coloured rim flanges. The electric soft top is in black.

The AMG Aerodynamics package not only dramatises the appearance: larger flics on the front and rear apron, the larger rear diffuser and the active profile in the underbody improve the aerodynamic properties. The same applies to the downforce and aerodynamic drag. This all brings advantages for the driving characteristics at high speeds and for improved efficiency.

The AMG Night package and the AMG Night package II enhance the visual appearance of the "Motorsport Collectors Edition". With the AMG Night package, selected exterior features are finished in high-gloss black: the front splitter, side sill panels, mirror caps and the decorative trim in the rear diffuser. Added to this are darkened exhaust tailpipes. The AMG Night package II adds further features in black chrome, including the radiator grille, typography and Mercedes star at the rear. In addition, the interior components of the headlamps and rear lights are darkened. The brake callipers of the AMG high-performance composite brake system are also painted black. The AMG fuel filler cap in silver chrome with "AMG" lettering also emphasises the special status of the edition.

The standard AMG Performance seats are available with two upholsteries: in black nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre with red topstitching and embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints, or in black nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre with yellow topstitching and embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints. The AMG carbon-fibre trim harmonises with the heated AMG Performance steering wheel with carbon-fibre rim.

The Burmester® high end 3D surround sound system, ambient lighting, the MBUX Interior Assistant, the Driving Assistance package and the head-up display are included as standard in this very extensively equipped special model. AMG TRACK PACE provides support with a wide range of data when driving on the racetrack. The Load Compartment package increases everyday practicality, while the illuminated AMG door sill panels welcome passengers with the AMG logo.

To protect the valuable edition model it is equipped with GUARD 360. In addition, every customer receives a customised AMG indoor car cover with logo. With its breathable outer skin made of tear-resistant synthetic fabric and an anti-static inner lining of woven flannel, this protects the vehicle from dust and scratches in the garage.

I don’t like this new generation much at all. Reason is because they made it look like one of the much lesser models.

Like a watered down AMG GT convertible.
I think it looks pretty good, but can't say I'd put my own $ into one.

True, looks like they're merging all their cars to a similar look.
Good & bad I suppose. It looks good on the C & E, but still not sold on it for the S.

It’s been going on for a long time - I mean even in the 80’s the cars followed similar themes. But for some reason it worked back then and made the models still retain their distinct nature. That is what is lost here.

The E was always a bit of an outlier, but the C & S always shared some design cues.
That said, like above, I like the W206, just don't like that design on the W223 S-class.

We took to the track for a brief stint behind the wheel of the new SL 43 to find out if a four-cylinder SL really cuts the mustard.

You can now buy a Mercedes-Benz SL-Class that has as many seats as its engine has cylinders. Never before in the 69-year history of the Mercedes SL has that been the case, but it is now - for the first time since the original 190 SL, you can get a four-cylinder under the hood. That original car didn't have four seats, though, and it was an incredible, lightweight machine that was developed for racing first and road use second.

Officially dubbed the Mercedes-AMG SL 43, this is a wholly-AMG-developed SL with 2+2 seating, a chassis shared with the upcoming AMG GT, rear-wheel drive, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine up front delivering 375 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque with a little hybrid assistance.

At the southern tip of Africa, around the famed Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, I got my first few laps behind the wheel of the SL 43, which was enough for me to realize the world doesn't need a four-cylinder SL.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL is a looker. Mercedes got the proportions right on this one, despite somehow shoving in an extra pair of seats. And on looks alone, you would never imagine anything other than a V8 under the hood.

It also feels lovely - the interior is much better than I thought it would be, and even the massive infotainment screen in the center doesn't look out of place. Bear in mind that on a race track, the last thing I was fiddling with was the touchscreen. Still, the seats drop low into the chassis, and on a cold southern hemisphere winter afternoon, the heated seats work great.

The steering wheel feels good in hand, too, and for someone six-foot-two as I am, the seating position was spot on.

The seventh-generation SL is a Mercedes-AMG developed model from the ground up, and its platform will underpin the new AMG GT sports car/supercar. This shows, as through high- and low-speed corners, the SL 43 remains planted and well-composed. Under braking, there's no nose-diving or unsettling of the rear, which suggests an inherent balance to the platform AMG is working with.

The steering agrees, and the turn-in is tight with precise weighting, albeit not giving the most feedback. Still, with a four-cylinder engine up front, one would expect keener turn-in than what you get from its larger eight-cylinder brethren.

Braking performance also seemed decent, with strong feedback from the pedal and the ability to shed speed well and get the car perched nicely on the front axle.

The fundamentals seem right, but one aspect let them down.

I've never been one to slag off a car for having a four-cylinder engine or even a three-pot, but a Mercedes SL isn't just any car. It's the S-Class of sports cars, a car that once wholly embodied Mercedes' racing ethos. And in something like that, a four-cylinder doesn't work.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder has an electric turbocharger to mitigate lag and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for an extra dose of torque. Its on-paper figures of 375 hp and 354 lb-ft seem fine, too, and with peak power at 6,750 rpm and torque between 3,250 and 5,000 rpm, it seems like a car that'll be happy to rev out to reward the driver.

But it feels limp.

Perhaps the direct comparison to a 416-hp/369-lb-ft Mercedes-AMG A45 S hyper-hatch ahead of me left me wanting, but for a car entirely developed by AMG to have weaker performance than a run-of-the-mill hatch tuned by the department is a big problem.

It revs out fine, picks up speed decently, and the nine-speed automatic gearbox does a fair job of being in the right gear at the right time. But the engine feels flat, lacks character as it revs out, and because it doesn't have the DCT of the A 45 and CLA 45, it doesn't give off the same flatulent upshifts.

More power and noise could be a remedy - giving it the engine tune from the facelifted A 45 S should've been a no-brainer - but I think this would be a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. When the AMG SL lineup is going to be headlined by an 800-plus-hp plug-in hybrid V8 with AWD, a four-cylinder seems like a weak attempt to scrape up the remaining buyers who can no longer get a new Mercedes-AMG SLC. Those aren't SL buyers, and cheapening the SL nameplate to cheapen the admission price (if six figures can be considered cheap) is a disservice to a product that otherwise impresses and leaves the door open for shoppers to find more cylinders and noise elsewhere.

I'm sure it'll have more than enough power in a real-world scenario, but the Mercedes SL has never been described as 'enough' or 'ample.' The SL is meant to be superlative - a feast for the senses. At idle and low-speed trundling, the engine needs to hint that there's more to be unleashed, and on song, I expect to be assaulted by an acoustic symphony. The SL 43 doesn't do that.

This article may be labeled a first drive, but the truth is that I experienced the SL 43 in a very limited environment, on the pristine tarmac of an FIA Grade 2 circuit where its suspension rides as smoothly in Comfort as it does in Sport +. My time behind the wheel was limited to just a few laps, too, so these are very brief, very rudimentary impressions, most of which warrant further investigation on a week-long test drive, which will happen soon.

Within the confines of a race track, you can't evaluate ride quality, and your mind is (or should be) so focused on the act of driving so much that you can't really look at interior details.

A race track is a great place for manufacturers to launch a product and a terrible place for a first drive, as so much of the everyday experience isn't seen or felt on a track, and just being on a great track immediately puts any gearhead car tester in a better frame of mind than being behind a keyboard.

Remember this the next time you see first drive impressions from a track-only launch. There's more to a car than its behavior in a conditions-controlled environment.

GLA45 & C43 AMG starts at just shy of $60k, C43 coupe just over $60k C43 vert just under $70k
Sounds like the SL43 will start at over $100k & may be a less thrilling drive
Tough sell, IMO, when the SL55 with a 4.0TT V8 is $140k [160k for an upper-mild build]. For those that are in the market for an SL, the 30-50k likely won't be a huge hit for them to up to the 55.

This car is for those in the market for an SL where 30-50k absolutely matters. Cars in the ~100k price range are bought by a huge, diverse population of people. Everyone from the 40k a year millionaires all the way up to the people with real money. It's not like new Ferraris and McLarens where you have to have real money to get one. It's also a car for the people who want the looks of the real AMG while not really caring all that much about the performance.

Mercedes-AMG crowns the SL series with the new SL63 S E Performance. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and the AMG Electric Drive Unit together generate a system output of 600 kW (816 hp) and a maximum system torque of up to 1,420 Nm. This makes the new model the most powerful SL of all time. And it is already the fifth series with the AMG-specific E PERFORMANCE hybrid technology. The immediate response of the electric drive, the rapid build-up of torque and the linear power delivery enable an impressive driving experience. The acceleration to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and the top speed of 317 km/h underline the confident appearance. Systems such as the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active roll stabilisation and active rear-axle steering ensure a widespread between comfort and driving dynamics.

"The SL has always been an icon in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The latest version of the legendary roadster transfers this status into the future. First and foremost is the new SL63 S E Performance, which, with its innovative technology, is the most powerful member of the SL family. With this unique concept, we offer our customers not only superior performance but also the option of all-electric driving. Extensive equipment options and the high-quality materials used also make the SL one of the most exclusive roadsters on the market - a real dream car." Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes Maybach divisions

E PERFORMANCE: Combustion engine at the front, electric motor at the rear

In the SL63 S E Performance, the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine on the front axle is also combined with an electric drive unit on the rear axle. It integrates a 150 kW (204 hp), permanently excited synchronous electric motor with an electrically switched two-speed transmission and a mechanical rear axle limited-slip differential. The lightweight high-performance battery is also located in the rear above the rear axle. This compact design results in numerous advantages. The electric motor acts directly on the rear axle and can therefore convert its power more directly into propulsion. This provides an extra boost when starting off, accelerating, or overtaking. As slip on the rear axle increases, the driving force of the electric motor is also transferred to the front wheels as required. The mechanical connection of the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive makes this possible via the cardan shaft and drive shafts of the front wheels. The positioning on the rear axle improves the weight and axle load distribution in the vehicle and thus forms the basis for convincing handling.

Inspired by Formula 1™, developed in Affalterbach: the AMG High Performance battery

The development of the lithium-ion energy storage is inspired by technologies proven in the Formula 1™ hybrid racing cars of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. The AMG High Performance battery offers high performance that can often be used one after the other. This increases the overall performance of the SL Roadster. Added to this is the rapid energy consumption and high power density. The high-performance battery offers a capacity of 6.1 kWh, 70 kW continuous power and 150 kW peak power. Charging takes place via the installed 3.7 kW on-board charger with alternating current at a charging station, wallbox or household socket. The battery is designed for fast power delivery and consumption and not for the longest possible range. Nevertheless, 13 km of purely electric travel (EAER) enables a practical operating radius.

The basis for the high performance of the AMG 400-volt battery is direct cooling: a high-tech coolant flows around all 560 cells and cools them individually. Every battery needs a defined temperature for optimal power delivery. If the energy storage device becomes too cold or too hot, it temporarily loses noticeable power or must be turned down so as not to be damaged if the temperature is too high. A uniform temperature control of the battery therefore has a decisive influence on its performance, service life and safety.

Operating strategy: electrical power always available

The basic operating strategy is derived from the hybrid power pack of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1™ racing car. As in the premier class of motorsport, maximum propulsion is always available when the driver needs it - for example, to be able to accelerate powerfully out of corners or when overtaking. The electrical power can always be accessed and frequently reproduced through high recuperation performance and demand-based recharging. The independent battery concept enables the optimal compromise between maximum driving dynamics and efficiency. All components are perfectly coordinated with each other: the increase in performance can be experienced and measured immediately.

The eight AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes "Electric", "Battery Hold", "Comfort", "Smoothness", "Sport", "Sport+", "RACE", and "Individual" are precisely tailored to the new drive technology. They offer a wide range of driving experiences - from efficient to dynamic. The driving programmes adapt important parameters such as the response of the drive and transmission, the steering characteristic, the chassis damping or the sound. The programmes can be selected using the AMG button and the central display in the centre console or the AMG steering wheel buttons.

The performance hybrid usually starts silently ("Silent Mode") in the "Comfort" driving programme when the electric motor is switched on. The "Ready" icon in the instrument cluster signals that the vehicle is ready to drive. In addition, a powerful, sonorous, AMG-typical start-up sound is heard as acoustic feedback on the readiness to drive, which is radiated into the interior via the vehicle speakers. A light step on the accelerator pedal is enough and the AMG Performance Hybrid starts moving.

Recuperation can be selected in four stages

Because the high-performance battery is always in the optimal temperature window of around 45 degrees thanks to direct cooling, recuperation can also be optimised. Normally, a battery heats up a lot when the recuperation output is high, so energy recovery must be limited. Recuperation begins when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, i.e. in coasting mode without touching the brake pedal. This charges the battery and creates a braking torque. The wheel brakes are protected or, depending on the recuperation level and traffic situation, do not need to be activated at all.

The driver can select four different levels of recuperation power using the right AMG steering wheel button. This applies to all driving programmes except for "Smoothness". In the highest level, so-called "one-pedal" driving is possible. Over 100 kW of power can be fed back into the battery. Another advantage of recuperation: the vehicle does not become faster when driving steeply downhill. The system works like an engine brake.

Visual modifications indicate the E PERFORMANCE drive

The exclusive identifying feature of the new top model in the SL series is the rear section. What's new here is the integrated plug-in loading flap and the model name highlighted in red. There are also grooved trapezoidal twin tailpipe trims on the outside. The "E PERFORMANCE" fender badge on the side indicates the exclusive drive. As standard, the hybrid rolls on 20-inch multi-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels. They are aerodynamically optimised, painted matt black with a high-sheen finish. The dimensions on the front axle are 265/40 R 20 on 9.5 J x 20 and on the rear axle 295/35 R 20 on 11 J x 20.

As with the entire series, numerous paints and individual equipment details are also available for the hybrid version. The MANUFAKTUR programme with an extensive selection of exterior and interior customisation is also available. The MANUFAKTUR colour orange flame is new and exclusive. The exterior design can be further accentuated with numerous appearance packages, among other things. There are also 20- and 21-inch light alloy and forged wheels in various colour variants.

Driver-focused interior with extensive choice options

The interior serves the sporty target group as well as customers who value maximum comfort. The cockpit design right down to the portrait format display in the centre console is focused on the driver and impresses with a harmonious overall impression. The practical dimensional concept with 2+2 seats offers generous space in the interior.

One of many highlights in the interior are the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats. They combine good lateral support with high long-distance comfort. The optional AMG performance seats with integrated headrests and ventilation openings in the seat backs are even sportier. Three massage programmes ensure excellent long-distance comfort. This can be increased even further: The ENERGIZING Package Plus combines seating functions and lighting moods to create relaxing comfort programmes.

The large selection of seat covers reflects the range from comfortable to performance-oriented features. One- and two-tone Nappa leather is included, as is the particularly elegant MANUFAKTUR upholstery in Nappa leather with diamond quilting. The sporty side is emphasised by the combination of Nappa leather with MICROCUT microfibre and contrasting topstitching in yellow or red.

MBUX multimedia system with hybrid-specific displays

The MBUX multimedia system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) is intuitive to use and capable of learning. The SL63 S E Performance contains numerous AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions. Exclusive menu items such as "AMG Performance" underline the sporty character. Hybrid technology can also be experienced visually: high-quality graphics visualise the power flow of the drive system. The speed, power, torque and temperature of the electric machine can also be called up.

Active aerodynamics re-tuned

The active aerodynamics were also fine-tuned. It is adapted to electrified drive technology. The active aerodynamic element, which is hidden in the underbody in front of the engine, contributes to balanced driving behaviour. It is standard on the SL top model. This carbon profile is an exclusive AMG development and protected by patents. It reacts to the position of the AMG driving programmes and automatically extends downwards by around 40 millimetres at a speed of 80 km/h. This creates the so-called Venturi effect, which additionally sucks the car onto the road and reduces the lift on the front axle.

Another active component is the extendable rear spoiler seamlessly integrated into the boot lid. It changes its position depending on the driving condition. The AMG aerodynamics team has adapted the control software for the SL63 S E Performance to the higher performance and modified numerous parameters. They include the driving speed, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration, and the steering speed in the calculation. From speeds of 80 km/h, the spoiler adopts five new angular positions to either optimise driving stability or reduce air resistance.

AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation

Also standard is the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation. The displacement dampers, which can be adjusted in rebound and compression, also have semi-active, interconnected hydraulic elements. They replace the conventional torsion bar stabiliser. This technology makes it possible to reduce body roll movements and provide a wide range of driving programmes. The hydraulic connection of the damper chambers on all four wheels takes place via appropriate lines and the control valves within the adaptive dampers.

The connection of the four spring struts and the pressure regulation of the pump and switching valves allow a very wide roll spring rate while at the same time reducing rolling movements. To put it figuratively: every torsion bar from zero to rigid can be represented automatically. This increases comfort in everyday life because even unevenness on one side is compensated for individually. When cornering dynamically, the hydraulics also actively reduce camber loss. Thanks to the resulting high camber rigidity, the roadster steers very precisely.

When driving straight ahead, the system opens completely depending on the driving programme and driving situation. The system compensates for one-sided obstacles that would otherwise lead to rolling movements. Drivers and passengers experience a significantly more comfortable driving experience. The reduced rolling movements when cornering contribute equally to comfort and driving dynamics. The characteristics of the driving behaviour in the individual driving programmes can also be further differentiated between comfort and sport.

Active rear-axle steering combines agility and stability

The SL63 S E Performance is also equipped with active rear-axle steering as standard. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction (up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (faster than 100 km/h) as the front wheels. The system therefore enables both agile and stable driving behaviour. These are characteristics that contrast with each other without rear-axle steering. Further advantages include easier vehicle control at the limit and less steering effort because the front wheel steering ratio is more direct.

Easy to control and stable: the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

In keeping with the extreme performance values and the associated performance, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system, with bronze-coloured 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and 1-piston floating calipers at the rear, comes as standard. Compared to AMG models with a pure combustion engine, it is larger in size: the carbon ceramic brake discs measure 420 x 40 millimetres on the front axle and 380 x 32 millimetres on the rear axle. The braking system impresses with very short braking distances as well as maximum stability and fading stability under heavy use. It also scores points with its long service life. The lightweight material saves additional weight and reduces unsprung masses.

The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is the sportiest model in the Maybach brand's history. Also new is the uniquely cohesive combination of colours and materials for the exterior and interior, with the Maybach pattern as a linking design element. These special accents appear throughout, from front to rear, inside and out. There will be two curated design concepts for the open-top two-seater at market launch: The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series Red Ambience is characterised by a new two-tone paint finish of obsidian black metallic over MANUFAKTUR garnet red metallic. In the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series White Ambience, obsidian black metallic contrasts with MANUFAKTUR opalite white magno. The exceptionally brilliant red and the elegant white both embody sensuality, beauty and lightness. They perfectly express the philosophy and driving experience of the new model. Other exterior colours are possible upon specific customer request. The interior features sustainably tanned, crystal white MANUFAKTUR Exclusive nappa leather and trim parts in gleaming silver chrome. Market rollout starts in Europe in spring 2025, with other markets to follow.

"Our customers love something special. The Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series adds a sporty two-seater to our model family for the ultimate open-air pleasure. It combines a dynamic driving experience with everything that characterises a Mercedes-Maybach: excellent craftsmanship, exquisite design details and fine materials." Iconic design refined with exclusive Maybach styling elements and double scoop

In keeping with the brand philosophy, the Mercedes-Maybach SL offers a holistic sensory experience. The contours of the brand-specific, chrome-finished radiator grille are illuminated, as is the finely integrated MAYBACH lettering. The distinctive bonnet bears an upright Mercedes star and a chromed fin running front to rear along its centre. To further enhance the exclusivity, the obsidian black bonnet is available upon request with the Maybach pattern incorporated in graphite grey uni. This process is very complex and is partly done by hand. First, the bonnet receives a base coat, which is then sanded by hand. The Maybach pattern is then printed onto it. Each part of the process is technically sophisticated and must be executed with the utmost precision. Next, the bonnet is coated with clear matte lacquer, sanded by hand and finally finished with a further coat of clear matte lacquer.

The inside of the headlights is finished with high-quality accenting in rose gold. The dedicated front skirt emphasises the vehicle's width with horizontal air intakes. The windscreen frame is finished in gleaming chrome. A further chrome insert graces the sill cladding. The Mercedes-Maybach SL runs on 21-inch forged wheels in 5-hole design or multi-spoke design.

The extensively insulated acoustic soft top consists of light black fabric, with the Maybach pattern subtly incorporated in anthracite. The rear is characterised by rear lights with the Maybach signet, a brand-specific rear skirt with chrome trim, a dedicated diffuser design and tailpipe trims with a signature horizontal bar. Behind the seats, an aerodynamically designed double scoop reinforces the individual look. Together with the chrome fin on the bonnet, it gives the two-seater particularly elegant and sporty proportions when viewed from the side, especially with the top down.

Interior features Maybach-specific equipment and radiant, crystal white leather

Inside, sustainably tanned, crystal white nappa leather creates an exceptionally exquisite ambience. It features on the door panels, the centre console and on the brand's signature comfort seats. The seat upholstery has a new floral design. The space behind the seats is also finished in white leather. The galvanised seat backrests and silver chrome trim provide a striking contrast.

The fully digital instrument display and the electrically adjustable centre display incorporate the Maybach-specific start-up animations and display styles. Further brand hallmarks are the steering wheel, the stainless-steel pedals and the stainless-steel door sill trims.

High level of driving and acoustic comfort combined with superior eight-cylinder driving experience

The highest standards also apply to driving and acoustic comfort. Comprehensive measures guarantee a quiet and comfortable, typically Maybach, driving experience. These include a noise-optimised exhaust system, an extensive insulation and absorption package as well as a comfort-oriented suspension set-up and soft engine mounts. The combination of a 4.0-litre biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and smooth-shifting 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with adapted accelerator pedal characteristics ensures the supremely dynamic driving pleasure expected of a Maybach. The fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive offers high traction even in slippery road conditions, thus increasing driving safety. The standard-fit rear-axle steering combines agility and stability for a manoeuvrable and safe driving experience.

Exclusive collection from MAYBACH Icons of Luxury

As befitting the new Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series, MAYBACH Icons of Luxury will offer a curated collection in boutiques and the online store from market launch. This includes a leather jacket, sneakers, a scarf, a tote bag and a dog bag. Their design is inspired by the materials and colours of the open-top two-seater.
