Mercedes-AMG is unleashing the new S 63 AMG. The most powerful high-performance saloon in the luxury segment sets new standards in terms of driving dynamics, lightweight construction and efficiency. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine – the most powerful member of the BlueDIRECT engine family, with an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and torque of 900 Nm – delivers effortlessly superior performance. Thanks to systematic lightweight construction based on the "AMG Lightweight Performance" philosophy, the S 63 AMG is up to 100 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. A combination of an efficient drive system and reduced weight results in an NEDC combined fuel consumption of 10.1 to 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres (237 to 242 g/km CO2). The new S 63 AMG is also available with the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC as an option for the first time. This not only enhances traction – the S 63 AMG represents a new dimension in driving dynamics in its segment. The design, equipment and appointments of the S 63 AMG meet the highest standards in terms of high-class appeal, quality and perfection.

AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 100 kg lighter than before

Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S 63 AMG by up to 100 kilograms compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminium. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fibre, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further four kilograms. The S 63 AMG also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 3.49 kg/hp, resulting in effortlessly superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.0 to 4.4 seconds, depending on model variant, and the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and a torque of 900 Nm, the AMG eight-cylinder unit from the BlueDIRECT engine family (in-house designation M 157) outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new S 63 AMG is 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres lower than that of the predecessor model, even though the engine output has been increased by up to 30 kW (41 hp). The range-topping eight-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is due to come into force in 2015.

AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps

The AMG sports exhaust system in the S 63 AMG has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in "C" (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine's sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

Engine production at AMG

Like all AMG engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the S 63 AMG is assembled by hand in the hand-finishing section at AMG, observing the most stringent quality standards. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the M 157 in Affalterbach according to the "one man, one engine" philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine fitter's signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz's high-performance brand.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 20 kilograms

Following the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the S 63 AMG is the second AMG high-performance model to replace the conventional starter battery with a lithium-ion battery. The new technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kilograms. The high-performance battery is relatively insensitive to cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. The S 63 AMG is the world's first volume produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented "C" mode the ECO start/stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts. In "C" mode the car generally starts in second gear.

In the "S" and "M" transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The optionally available performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive likewise enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 50 Nm, which exploits the frictional connection potential of all four wheels to the full on snow and ice in particular.

The technical basis for the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimised design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 70 kilograms, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.

All variants of the S 63 AMG are fitted with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. There is no irritating understeer when turning into corners.

Two suspension variants: AIRMATIC and MAGIC BODY CONTROL

The S 63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. One new feature is the continuous damping adjustment, which can be controlled independently in the compression stage and rebound stage. It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface conditions. "Comfort" and "Sport" suspension modes can be selected at the push of a button. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S 63 AMG 4MATIC. These measures optimise the vehicle's agility when driving dynamically. With the redesigned front axle and the special all-wheel-drive set-up, the S 63 AMG 4MATIC represents a new dimension in its segment when it comes to driving dynamics.
The S 63 AMG with rear-wheel drive features AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL. The new S-Class is the first car in the world able to recognise road surface undulations in advance. If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects such undulations with the help of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. Both suspension modes – "Comfort" and "Sport" – are also available here. The AMG-specific elastokinematics ensure more directness when driving dynamically.
Both suspension variants available for the S 63 AMG offer hallmark Mercedes comfort on long journeys.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio is the perfect complement as it greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility whilst maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In "Comfort" suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the "Sport" suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels sportily stiff steering assistance – which tends to result in better road feel. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback and steering precision.

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

For the first time, the S 63 AMG is available exclusively with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight whilst increasing strength and lowers the unsprung masses, resulting in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S 63 AMG is fitted with AMG light-alloy wheels that are painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish – size 8.5x19 at the front and 9.5x19 at the rear with
255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tyres respectively.

Optional extras include AMG forged light-alloy wheels, painted titanium grey and polished, with size 8.5x20 at the front and 9.5x20 at the rear paired with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tyres respectively. The AMG light-alloy wheels feature a high-quality, screwable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is elegantly integrated into one of the ten spokes. As an option, these AMG light-alloy wheels can also be supplied painted matt black with a high-sheen rim flange. As an alternative in the same format, there is a "Siena" designer variant with 5 twin spokes, which is painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and has a black wheel bolt cover.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option for the first time

Extremely short stopping distances and spontaneous deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the new S 63 AMG is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimised, fade-resistant AMG high-performance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option for the first time. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhancing driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 420 millimetres and is recognisable by the "AMG
Carbon Ceramic" logo on the specially painted brake callipers.

Design: dynamism and exclusivity fused with sensuous forms

Powerful and exclusive, dynamic and prestigious – the new S 63 AMG also makes a visual impression. The high-performance saloon's design is defined by the impressive blend of hallmark Mercedes sensual forms, classic architecture and a sleek silhouette with classic AMG design features. A large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional radiator grille underlines the special status of the S-Class – with an exciting contrast to this being provided by the front apron with three large air dams. The front apron with the grille painted in high-gloss black displays the stylised "A" that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles and emphasises the exclusivity and power of the S 63 AMG. Flics in high-gloss black on the side air intakes optimise the flow of air to the cooling modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport. The three-dimensional front splitter in silver chrome reduces lift.

Side sill panels with three-dimensional inserts in silver chrome make the vehicle appear closer to the road and create dynamism along the flanks with the brand's hallmark "Dropping Line". Large light-alloy wheels are another trademark AMG feature: they afford a clear view of the AMG high-performance brake system. "V8 BITURBO" lettering in new, contemporary typography on the front wings identifies the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model. This new lettering also appears in the "S 63 AMG" model designation on the boot lid. The design is drawn to a powerful conclusion by the black diffuser insert with trim in silver chrome and the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps.

Interior: beguiling appointments, design and quality

Like the exterior design, the S 63 AMG interior is a beguiling combination of the sportily exclusive atmosphere of a true AMG automobile with classic Mercedes values such as improved interior dimensions, new control logic, new ergonomic touches, ease of use, safety, appeal and aesthetics. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electrical adjustment, Memory function and seat heating offer the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Fine nappa leather in AMG V8 design with lavish perforations and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exquisite and luxurious atmosphere on board. Special touches include the embossed emblem on the armrest of the front centre console and the high-quality analogue clock in IWC design, which for the first time features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and metal appliqués on the dial.

The AMG sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim, perforated leather in the grip area and aluminium shift paddles allows perfect vehicle control. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT colour display as an AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials: in addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG logo in the speedometer with 330 km/h scale (left) and the "V8 BITURBO" lettering in the rev counter (right).

Selecting "Warm up" in the AMG main menu brings up two round dials indicating the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures. Vehicle configuration, for example activation of a certain transmission and suspension mode, is effected in the AMG main menu "Setup" by means of buttons on the centre console. An animated S 63 AMG on the TFT display between the speedo and rev counter gives the driver visual feedback. The upper section of the display contains a permanent gear indicator and, when manual transmission mode "M" is selected, also an upshift recommendation. At the lower edge, the activated transmission mode, the ESP® mode and the suspension set-up are displayed.

Traditionally the top of the Mercedes-Benz product range is occupied by the grand coupé. With the Concept S-Class Coupé the company will provide a concrete vision of the next model generation at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt: with its gorgeous appearance and self-assured style it embodies the design philosophy of sensual clarity. In the interior with its spectacular architecture and truly exclusive appointments the four-seater defines the state of the art of modern luxury.

Design: sensual clarity at its most beguiling

Sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury – this was the focus for the designers, and is the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The aim is to create clear contours and smooth surfaces that stage high tech while exuding emotional appeal. The sensual clarity is reflected in the core design values of tradition, emotion and progressivism. These are the guiding star, and are accentuated differently depending on the model. Mercedes-Benz creates a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde, between tradition and progressivism. Each model series has an assigned role and a very specific character, depending on the attributes on which the design focusses. And yet a Mercedes-Benz is always recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz. Because in addition to incorporating new stylistic developments, and in the interests of keeping tradition alive, the designers draw from a gene-pool of styling features typical of the brand.

"Design needs the sublime! Because design is the best brand ambassador. At the centre of our work is sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury, because this is precisely what gets to the heart of our brand philosophy – the bipolarity of intelligence and emotion", says Wagener.

The exterior: flowing profile of perfect proportions

The flowing profile of the Concept S-Class Coupé embodies sensual clarity in a modern way. It is characterised by typical rear-wheel drive proportions, which are emphasised by the Mercedes-typical signature, the dropping line. The long bonnet with distinctive lines and powerdomes, the cowering greenhouse with high beltline, the accentuated wheel arches as well as the 21-inch wheels (tyres at front 265/35 R 21, at rear 295/35 R 21) and the visually broad rear substantiate the claim of the Concept S-Class Coupé as a masterpiece of automotive refinement. With a wheelbase of 2945 mm the coupé measures 5050 mm in length, 1958 mm in width and 1409 mm in height.

Positively arched surfaces give the Concept S-Class Coupé a sensual character. The sculpted appearance lends it classic elegance that forms a perfect symbiosis with the modern-progressive design idiom.

The view from the side is marked by the dropping line in keeping with the emotional character of the vehicle. It underscores the brand-typical proportions like a signature. The lines are deliberately reduced to the basics. This creates a timeless clarity.

The creative interaction of various design elements lend the Concept S-Class Coupé a superior and self-assured front: at the centre of the vehicle front is the three-dimensional and further evolved diamond radiator grille, whose structure is defined in this case by rectangular, dark chrome-plated elements. It bears the central Mercedes star and one blade.

The full-LED headlamps with their iconic eyebrows as daytime driving lamps lend it an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze. On the Concept S-Class Coupé the eyebrows have been further advanced with a semicircular counter-swish. The diamond-look of the headlamps and the tail lamps underline the luxurious appointments of the show car.

The side profile is defined by the dome-shaped stretched roof line and the frameless doors. An elegant, three-dimensional chrome frame surrounds the glass areas that are uninterrupted by B-pillars. This underscores the Mercedes-typical coupé look. In designing the pillared exterior mirrors the designers took opportunity of the liberties offered by a concept car and made them especially slim, giving them an elegant appearance.

A muscle above the rear axle protruding from the side wall generates a sense of lightness and dynamic spirit even at a standstill. The positively arched surfaces and lines of the side walls flow into the rear end with a dramatic tapered effect.

The rear end with its surfaces, broad shoulders and distinctive character lines rounds out the emotional overall appearance. Moving the license plate to the lower bumper section allows positioning the three-pointed star more prominently on the smooth boot lid. This is complemented by a chrome trim strip modelled with love of detail. It runs horizontally across the boot lid and continues past the tail lamps, creating visual width. The arrangement of the LEDs in two horizontal rows within the two-piece tail lamp represents high tech and at the same time is reminiscent of the relief-type design on earlier models.

The interior: dynamic flow of lines

Sculpted elegance and simplicity also characterises the interior. The white instrument panel exudes sensual clarity. Its curved shape is reminiscent of a whale fluke just before it re-enters the water. Like the entire interior it is dominated by flowing lines: the upper and lower wave create a clear structure.

The architecture of the instrument panel is spectacular: Thanks to a new airbag packaging the designers were able to give the lower part of the instrument panel an extremely sculpted shape. The upper section of the instrument panel seems to float sensually in front of the dashboard as a so-called top layer. The instrument panel seamlessly transitions into the doors in a wrap-around design. The wavelike motion continues in the door panels.
The ventilation nozzles, which among other places are housed as a four-piece cluster in the centre of the instrument panel, have a futuristic and highly detailed design: fins that route the air stream surround an oblong hole. The ventilation nozzles are designed to add contrasts and are made of a mix of white aluminium with a ceramics-like appearance and brushed and polished aluminium.

The aluminium control elements have a functional and clean design, and provide an exciting contrast to the organic and avant-garde shapes that surround them.

On top of the free-form surface under a reduced hood are the 30.7-cm (12.3-inch) screens familiar from the new S-Class. They have an aspect ratio of 8:3. In the Concept S-Class Coupé the fully glazed colour displays are even slimmer and seem to float even more freely. As high-tech elements they offer an exciting contrast to the sensual landscape of the instrument panel. The colour scheme of the displays is bluish and consequently sporty and modern.
A touch screen showing four world clocks is located on the centre console. The driver can choose which clocks to display: To do so, the driver first scrolls on a globe in the display and selects a time zone before a drop-down menu offers the corresponding city selections. The world clock concept was designed and implemented by designers and engineers at the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center in Palo Alto, California, USA.

The central command unit on the centre console looks like a shiny jewel. Its extremely high-quality "black diamond" surface creates depth of field. The "black diamond" method uses the chemical CVD (chemical vapour deposition) gas phase process to deposit a precious metal on a high-sheen chrome surface at temperatures of 1000°C. The metal reacts with the surface to form a layer that is highly scratch-resistant and has a high adhesive strength.
The door panels of the Concept S-Class Coupé are made from aluminium. Using computer algorithms delicate topographic lines were milled into the metal and mimic the contours of the door-mounted control elements. This creates an interesting light pattern with tiny sparkling highlights. For this creation the designers drew their inspiration from rock formations in Utah, USA. The progressive perforations of the loudspeakers were also generated using algorithms and display some intelligent aesthetics of mathematics.
Like the entire interior the seats have a highly dynamic and natural "flow of lines" and continue the sculpted design of the shapes. The front seats evoke associations of haute-couture tailoring because their sculpted shape embodies sensual lines reminiscent of figurines in fashion design. In the upper section of the seat the side bolsters envelope the occupant like a collar. The vertical lines of the seats come courtesy of an array of delicate piping. Piping on the side bolsters provides contrast and like the perforation of the seat surfaces is a factor in the sporty-elegant impression.

The choice of colours and materials plays with the extroverted contrasts of anthracite and white as well as aluminium, and bolsters both the timeless modernity and avant-garde nature of the design and the claim of the Concept S-Class Coupé to ultimate exclusivity, high quality and perfection. In this spirit the instrument panel and seats are made from supple calfskin. The roofliner of the vehicle is made from hand-woven silk and consequently underscores the exclusive character of the interior.

The technology: intelligent assistance systems and a seeing suspension

The Concept S-Class Coupé is powered by a V8 Biturbo engine. This engine produces 335 kW (455 hp) from a displacement of 4663 cc. The peak torque is 700 Nm.

The Concept S-Class Coupé is equipped with the "Intelligent Drive" technology from Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to two "camera eyes" the stereo camera can get a three-dimensional view of the area up to about 50 metres in front of the vehicle, and as "6DVision" can detect the position and movement of objects. It monitors the surroundings ahead of the vehicle over a range of up to 500 metres. These data are combined with the data from the radar and ultrasound sensors. A multitude of assistance systems monitors the surrounding traffic for the driver. This helps to reduce the burden on the driver and other road users are also protected.

The suspension makes use of the new stereo camera as well: like the new S-Class, the Concept S-Class Coupé can detect surface undulations in advance. If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects such undulations with the help of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. Using the camera images and vehicle status information, the control unit continuously calculates the best control strategy to cope with uneven stretches such as long undulations.

The infotainment system also meets the highest standards: the MoodGrid software from music recognition service Gracenote makes it possible to listen to whatever music fits the mood. Finding suitable songs no longer requires the driver and passengers of the Concept S-Class Coupé to awkwardly search through their collections of digital music. Based on a selected mood the software compiles a pre-selection of songs. This compilation not only includes familiar songs, but music from a catalogue containing 18 million tracks – adapted to the individual taste and the respective mood. The navigation system based on the Garmin NaviCore also offers more convenient orientation with a modern design and a 3D view.

Twelve cylinders, twin-turbocharging, 463 kW (630 hp) of output and 1000 newton metres of torque – the new S 65 AMG sets new standards as the most powerful vehicle in its segment of the market. Exceptional performance and outstanding dynamism – these are the hallmarks of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine. With its reduced fuel consumption and compliance with the EU 6 exhaust emissions standard, the new V12 saloon is fit for the future. The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL comes as standard with ROAD SURFACE SCAN, the world's first suspension with eyes. It goes without saying that the S 65 AMG offers supreme exclusivity in design and equipment specification. Two innovations, the head-up display and the touchpad, represent further enhancements in terms of comfort and safety.

The S 65 AMG is the only high-performance 12-cylinder automobile from a German premium manufacturer – and it is a car with a pedigree: the first generation of the S 65 AMG was launched in 2003, with the second generation being produced from 2006 until 2013.

The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivers 463 kW (630 hp) with a maximum torque of 1000 newton metres – figures that enable the S 65 AMG to outperform all other vehicles in its segment. This superiority is highlighted by the car's performance: the S 65 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The strengths of the 12-cylinder biturbo engine from Mercedes-AMG include its effortless acceleration in all speed ranges as well as its refined operation with the distinctive V12 sound typical of AMG. In short: the S 65 AMG impresses with its superior and stylish performance.

Compared with the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by 2.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined). With a fuel consumption of 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined), the new S 65 AMG is the world's most fuel-efficient V12 high-performance saloon in terms of power and torque. The range-topping 12-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is not due to come into force until 2015.

Opening the bonnet reveals the exclusive carbon-fibre/aluminium engine cover, which is a further sign of the exceptional status of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine. Two AMG logos on left and right together with a centrally positioned Mercedes star create a lasting impression. The 12-cylinder engine is assembled by hand at AMG's engine production facility in compliance with the most rigorous quality standards according to the philosophy "one man, one engine". Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine technician's signature underneath the Mercedes star offers unmistakable proof of the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz's high-performance brand.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

As before in the SL 65 AMG high-performance roadster, AMG combines the 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Unlike in the direct predecessor of the S 65 AMG, which featured an AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission, the seven-speed automatic transmission with its wide ratio spread guarantees a noticeably lower engine speed level. This makes a key contribution to reducing the vehicle's fuel consumption. The efficiency of the power train is further significantly improved by the fuel-economy converter, reduced-friction bearings and transmission oil heat management.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC has three individual driving programs, which can be selected at the press of a button in the centre console:

Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). In modes S and M the emphasis is on sportiness: maximum emotive appeal combined with truly perceivable dynamics is ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection during upshifts under full load; this shortens the shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts. The ECO start/stop function is always activated in transmission mode "C".

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 20 kilograms

Like the S 63 AMG, the S 65 AMG features a lithium-ion battery. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kilograms. The high-performance battery is relatively insensitive to cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG are the world's first volume-produced vehicles with such a battery concept.

AMG sports suspension with MAGIC BODY CONTROL

The S 65 AMG features as standard the AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL. The new S-Class is the first car in the world able to recognise road surface undulations in advance. If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects such undulations with the help of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. The "Comfort" and "Sport" modes are available for a driver-defined suspension setup. While AMG-specific elastokinematics on the 4-link front axle and multi-link independent rear suspension make for greater directness when a dynamic driving style is adopted, the AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL ensures the proverbial Mercedes long-distance comfort.

The S 65 AMG is equipped as standard with ESP® Dynamic Cornering Assist. Targeted braking intervention at the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. There is no irritating understeer when turning into corners.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio is the perfect complement this greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility while maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In "Comfort" suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the "Sport" suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels a more sportily stiff level of steering assistance. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback from the roadway and steering precision.

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

For the first time, the S 65 AMG is available exclusively with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength. The result is lower unsprung masses, giving advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S 65 AMG is fitted with AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, ceramic, high-gloss polished – front: 8.5 x 20, rear: 9.5 x 20, tyre sizes 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20.
The multi-spoke light-alloy wheels can be considered a reinterpretation of the traditional spoked wheels from the 1930s – such as the ones used in the legendary 540 K Mercedes dream car. The exclusive forged wheels on the S 65 AMG fascinate through their exceptional design: each of the 16 spokes is twisted, which causes the light-catching contours to radiate to the centre of the wheel hub. The effect: the wheel gives the impression of being even bigger. An additional high-grade detail is the screw-in, fully integrated wheel bolt cover of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The design also allows an unobscured view of the AMG high-performance braking system.

The matchless visual superiority of the AMG forged wheels is due to an elaborate finishing process: initial polishing is followed by manual grinding of the light-alloy wheels. Two polishing stages using different grinding pellets ensure the desired deep sheen. Having been cleaned, the wheel undergoes final treatment, including sealing with clear varnish.

Alternatively, three other AMG forged wheels of the same size are optionally available. The 10-spoke design is available painted in titanium grey and polished or painted in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange – and likewise features a screw-in, fully integrated wheel bolt cover of forged metal.

Alternatively, AMG forged wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and a black wheel bolt cover are available.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system as an option
Extremely short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the S 63 AMG is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite braking system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is also available as an option. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and has higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system has front brake discs with a diameter of 420 millimetres and is recognisable by the "AMG Carbon Ceramic" logo on the specially painted brake callipers.

Design: Sensual clarity is combined with dynamism and exclusivity

The S 65 AMG shows off its exceptional status not just with regard to its technology, but also in terms of design. The sensual clarity typical of Mercedes-Benz, with its classic architecture and flowing profile, is combined with expressive elements typical of AMG. Luxurious and stately, powerful and exclusive, dynamic and prestigious – the S 65 AMG is a true eye-catcher with a self-assured presence. The large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional V12 radiator grille with its six twin louvres in high-gloss chrome underlines the car's special status. An exciting contrast to this is provided by the front apron with its three large cooling air intakes. The front section sports the AMG-typical, stylised "A" to emphasise the powerful exclusivity of the S 65 AMG.
High-gloss chrome – this design element is used to exclusive effect in the S 65 AMG. An eye-catching appearance, especially in combination with dark paint colours, is guaranteed by the grilles and flics (air deflectors) on the side air intakes. The three-dimensional front splitter in high-gloss chrome reduces lift on the front axle, while the gap above the front splitter ensures an effective flow of air to the separate engine oil cooler behind it. Also in high-gloss chrome are the inserts in the side sill panels and the trim of the high-gloss black rear diffuser insert. Customers who attach greater value to an understated look have the option of ordering the grilles and flics in high-gloss black.

Further exclusive design features include the "V12 BITURBO" lettering on the wings and the "S 65 AMG" model badge on the boot lid – both in new, modern typography. The AMG sports exhaust system with its two chrome-plated, separate twin tailpipes is a source of fascination both visually and acoustically.

Exciting equipment and appointments together with supreme quality in the interior

Exclusivity and luxury, combined with emphatically sporty design elements – the interior of the S 65 AMG fascinates through its exceptional feel, highest-grade materials and exquisite quality. The defining features are the upholstery in exclusive nappa leather with seat upholstery layout in an exclusive diamond-pattern design. The delineated perforations in the leather upholstery of the AMG sports seats are a special highlight: there are intentionally no perforations in the nappa leather wherever there is contrasting topstitching. The result is extraordinarily neat seams and an unrivalled impression of quality. Other features of the Exclusive package include the nappa leather roof liner, leather-lined dashboard, door centre panels in a diamond-pattern design, leather-clad roof grab handles, additional wood trim and AMG stainless-steel door sill panels illuminated in white. Customers ordering Exclusive nappa leather upholstery are able to choose between black, satin beige/espresso brown, nut brown/black, porcelain/black and crystal grey/seashell grey.
Exclusively developed AMG sports seats provide the guarantee of optimal long-distance comfort. Electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control are standard features. As an additional bonus, newly contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed. High-quality AMG badges on all four seat backrests are part of the standard specification, while embossed AMG emblems can be found on the front and – in the case of individual rear seats – also on the rear centre console. Further AMG emblems are included on the trim of the seat backs.

The 2-spoke AMG sports steering wheel allows perfect vehicle control. The distinctly contoured steering wheel rim is covered with nappa leather, with perforated leather in the grip area. The insert is provided with characteristic AMG lettering. Aluminium shift paddles allow manual gear selection. To the right of the AMG sports steering wheel between the air vents is a high-quality analogue clock in an exclusive IWC design: this features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and genuine metal appliqués on the dial. High-grade chrome-plated door pins with AMG logo round off the exquisite S 65 AMG interior.

AMG instrument cluster with animated round dials

The AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials appears on the high-resolution TFT colour display. In addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, the typical AMG look includes the AMG logo in the speedometer with 360 km/h scale (left) and the "V12 BITURBO" lettering in the rev counter (right). An animated AMG start-up display is shown on the right-hand display. The AMG main menu has a digital speedometer and a permanent gear display in the upper section. In transmission mode "M", the driver is also prompted to perform an upshift shortly before the rpm limit is reached. Two additional round dials provide information on the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures when the driver selects "Warm up" from the AMG menu. "Set Up" displays the transmission and suspension mode as well as the activated ESP® mode. Visual feedback is by means of an animated S 65 AMG on the TFT display between speedometer and rev counter.

Head-up display for enhanced comfort and safety

Two new innovative developments are fitted in the S 65 AMG as standard: the head-up display and the touchpad. The head-up display projects important information such as vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation information, traffic signs and information from DISTRONIC PLUS onto the windscreen. The virtual colour display of size 21 x 7 centimetres appears to float on the bonnet at a distance of about two metres from the driver. This means that the head-up display is perfectly positioned in the driver's field of view. He or she is able to take in relevant information without having to look away from what is happening on the road ahead. In addition, the display shows the digital speed, engine speed and currently selected gear. In manual transmission mode, a coloured upshift bar and the possible gears for a manual gear change are projected onto the windscreen.

The brightness of the high-contrast display is automatically adjusted to suit the ambient brightness. The driver can also adjust the brightness to his or her preference. The position of the head-up display on the windscreen is height-adjustable and can be saved using the memory function.

Innovative touchpad for significantly easier operation

The new, innovative Mercedes-Benz touchpad makes it significantly easier to operate radio, telephone and navigation system. Unlike in conventional systems, the touchpad makes it possible to operate all infotainment functions. The input area is approximately 6.5 x 4.5 centimetres in size and is integrated into the handrest with a cover for the keypad. The touchpad can be controlled in the same way as a smartphone or tablet PC: it can recognise one- and two-finger gestures, swipe gestures and zoom gestures through intuitive widening and narrowing of the fingers. It is also possible to enter letters, numbers and special characters using handwriting. Every language available in COMAND Online is possible. The touchpad is designed with high-quality surfaces in high-gloss black and silver shadow.

The control surface of the new touchpad is integrated in the handrest of the central control unit, allowing safe and comfortable input. Behind the touch surface are three touch-sensitive keys which can be used to control important functions quickly and directly: back function, favourites menu, audio quick menu. The user receives clear haptic feedback when operating the touchpad control surface and the keys. Another highlight is the new hand resting recognition feature: a three-dimensional sensor signal is evaluated in order to detect whether the driver's hand is simply resting on the handrest or whether the driver is actually making an input with one or two fingers. This prevents incorrect inputs and improves the safety of operation. The driver can choose at any time which input method they prefer. As an alternative to the touchpad, the driver can also use the COMAND controller and LINGUATRONIC for the control of radio, telephone and navigation system.
