they changed the engine so they wouldnt have to use a supercharger to produce those numbers. they'll probably tune the hell out of it as the line progresses.

perhaps...but they will offer this particular engine configuration right? and the c55 option will probably cost tons of money...so whats the point? why offer both if they are trying to replace the 32?

c32 is supercharged or KOMPRESSOR and the C55 is a NA v8 engine. looks like alot of euro manuf. are putting big v8's in small sedans.. i think the next m3/m4 is looking for a v8 as well

Spy Shots: '05 Mercedes C55 AMG
V-8 power comes to the C-Class, again.
by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image

After four years on the market, Mercedes-Benz is giving its current W203 series C-Class models its first major facelift in February 2004. The new design can be recognized by new front and rear skirts, clear glass headlights, a narrower front grille, LED rear lights, and side protection bars for the exterior. Inside, the interior appointments - including seats, fabrics, and the dashboard - will be revised. Air conditioning is going to be standard in all four-cylinder models.

At the same time, the company will replace the top-of-the-range supercharged AMG C36 with an all-new model, dubbed the C55. The new label is indicative of the most important change: the 3.6-liter Kompressor V-6 engine is to be replaced with a normally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 engine, which is expected to generate around 270 kW (367 hp) of power and harks back to the former AMG C43.

The highly individualized, reworked sports model will incorporate all features of the general C-Class facelift and come with full AMG trim, including a spoiler and sill extension kit, a large chromed twin-exhaust system, customized aluminum alloy wheels and a specially tuned sport suspension. Under the bonnet, the 5.5-liter V-8 engine will first be mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, driving the rear wheels. Later, a new seven-speed transmission is expected to become available, but all-wheel drive will not be offered. The C55 will be available, though, as a four-door sedan and a five-door wagon.

"Ordinary" C-Class models can be ordered with the AMG styling package to look like the C43 or C36. But for the first time, the real AMG model will get a unique look: the C55 features a distinct front-end design with a special radiator grille, which is said to meld elements from the C-Class and the CLK coupe.

In the past all C-Class AMG's had a 3-year production run.

C36 1995-1997
C43 1998-2000 (very few 2000’s were imported due to terrible demand for the cheap AMG – E55 stole its thunder)
C32 2002-2004.
C55 2005-2007? (which is when the new W204 comes to market)

I doubt the performance #'s will be that much better. It will probably get better gas mileage though with less noise (no supercharger).

maybe they just want to release it so that it has more hp than current competition...and then once competition ups the HP, MB can just tweak this engine a bit

Mercedes C-Class News **First Drive (page 3)**

C-Class In Family Way
By Craig Cheetham

ndisguised shots of the facelifted Mercedes in the current issue of Auto Express magazine, show exactly what the newcomer will look like.

Due to hit the showrooms next summer, the magazine's spies snapped a prototype on the back of a transporter as it was travelling across Germany. The pictures clearly show how the C-Class is being given a more upmarket look, to bring it into line with E and S-Class models. At the front, a smaller grille combines with a deep spoiler, while the bumper has a distinctive bright chrome insert.

New rear lamp lenses are larger and darker than those of the current car, and the bootlid appears to cut deeper into the back bumper, giving a lower loading lip. Other changes include updated alloy wheels, mirrors and door handles.

Pictured to the right, at the edge of our photograph, is a C32 AMG version of the car, this time in estate form. Its 19-inch wheels and twin exhaust pipes are telltale signs that this is the performance version of the C-Class. Development work is clearly ongoing, as the back of the load-lugger remains partially disguised, with black tape around the tail-lights and bumper. Under the bonnet, engine choices will be identical to those of the current model, starting with the 1.8-litre C180K. A 2.1-litre unit will also be available, as will a pair of V6s, in 2.6 and 3.2-litre tune.

Diesels will include the current 2.2 and 2.7-litre CDI engines, both of which are set to get a power boost. The C32 AMG's unit will also be uprated. At present, the car produces 354bhp, but the revised model is likely to have at least 375bhp, as well as a new transmission with a seven-speed auto option.

Prices are expected to be about the same as those of the current range to keep the C-Class in demand until an all-new version makes its debut in 2008.

Stuttgart, Feb 02, 2004
Four years after launch, Mercedes-Benz is significantly enhancing the technology, equipment and design of the successful C-Class. The newly sports-tuned chassis, steering and six-speed manual transmission make the C-Class an even more agile performer. From spring 2004, a four-cylinder powerplant with compressor supercharger and an output of 141 kW/192 hp will be added to the engine line-up for the Saloon and Estate models. The C 220 CDI will develop 110 kW/150 hp, thus making it 5 kW/7 hp more powerful than its predecessor, whilst the new C 55 AMG developing 270 kW/367 hp is the first car in this Mercedes-Benz model series to feature an eight-cylinder engine.
The C-Class interior is enhanced further by a new thingypit design featuring exceptionally well designed controls and the THERMATIC automatic climate control system, which comes as standard. Also standard is the new paint which is based on nano-particle technology and offers greater scratch resistance. Optional hitech equipment includes bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light function, steering-wheel gearshift buttons for the automatic transmission and a new range of audio/navigation systems.

Available in Saloon, Estate or Sports Coup¨¦ guise, this Mercedes model series features a new-look front section ¨C bumper, radiator grille and headlamps ¨C that gives the cars a dynamic appearance even when stationary.

Sales of the current C-Class ¨C which was launched in May 2000 offering state-of-the-art technology, a high level of long-distance comfort and sporty agility ¨C have now topped the 1.26 million mark. Never before has Mercedes-Benz sold so many cars from the same model series in such a short space of time.

By introducing this major model enhancement package, the Stuttgart-based manu-facturer is augmenting the tried-and-trusted features of the C-Class, whilst at the same time raising standards, especially in terms of dynamism, comfort and perceived value.

Exterior: new-look front section, wider tyres and paintwork with greater scratch resistance

Major styling elements that define the cars' dynamic looks include the newly designed front bumper, featuring a prominent lower air intake with sports-car over-tones, as well as the new radiator grille which now has three louvres, giving a wider and hence more powerful feel. These louvres are either painted or feature an even more dynamic perforated design, depending on the model and appointments. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class will have clear-lens headlamps fitted as standard.

Further aspects which reinforce the dynamic nature of the C-Class include the wider track width ¨C increased from 1493 mm to 1505 mm ¨C as well as standard-fit 16-inch wheels and wide 205/55 R 16 tyres. Furthermore, the CLASSIC and ELEGANCE lines are equipped with the sportier side skirts and the rear bumper from the AVANTGARDE model.

Added lasting shine will be provided by the newly developed clearcoat which is based on nano-particle technology, offers greater scratch resistance and increases the renowned long-term value of this Mercedes model series. This paint finish is part of the extensive standard package.

Interior: new thingypit design and strong appeal throughout

The enhanced interior of the C-Class is a testament to the great care and meticulous attention to detail displayed by the Mercedes designers. This is immediately apparent in the tasteful use of chrome trim around many of the controls on the dashboard. It is also reflected in the newly developed switches and the modified seats which feature a different design for each line and provide added comfort.

Four circular dials with white lighting, which are designed in the style of high-class chronometers and easy to read, form the centrepiece of the all-new thingypit. A vertically arranged central display situated between the speedometer and rev counter works in tandem with the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel, thus allowing the driver to customise numerous settings. The climate-control module has been enhanced in terms of visual appeal and ergonomic design. Large, easy-to-use dials make it easier to alter the settings and also contribute to the upgraded look and feel of the interior.

Even the standard CLASSIC model comes with new fine-wood trim as standard, thus further improving the appearance of the centre dome and centre console. Meanwhile there is a choice of trim for the AVANTGARDE line: aluminium (standard) or bird's-eye maple (optional). Standard equipment for this model variant includes seat covers made from a combination of fabric and a new material called ARTICO.

The C-Class Sports Coup¨¦ underlines its youthful and dynamic credentials with a new three-spoke steering wheel featuring silver control buttons, aluminium appliqu¨¦s in the centre console and sports seats.
