For sure. I didn't look into the details, but from a cursory glance I remember the CTR forum had two separate threads; one for "good dealers" (selling at MSRP or less) and "naughty dealers" (selling over sticker).
Won't surprise anybody, but I remember the naughty dealer thread had many, many more posts.
That was really slimy of that dealer though. How far along did he get? Was he on a flight over there?

Easier said then done. Had a friend line one up in AZ for sticker (he lives in Socal, none of the local dealerships would play ball at all). Wire over a deposit, and on his way there he got a call letting him know they were refunding him his deposit because it got sold to someone else over sticker.
That happens all the time in the car industry... it happened to me several times as well.
Your friend could have asked the sales person for their next allocation and left the deposit there, and i dont see any reason why they would say No, since they already agreed to the price this time.
You can't expect them to serve the CTR to you on a silver plater at MSRP when everyone else is charging 3k over... you will have to work for it...
That is why if someone is willing to offer you one at MSRP, you go get it right away...It also has to do with the sales ppl that you deal with.
If they are professional, they would put a SOLD sign on the car as soon as the deposit is received.
Too many variables... but the bottom line is CTR can be had at MSRP and it is a lot easier now than 1 or 2 years ago.

Definitely not cheap. $30-$35k. One can get a base/mildly loaded MB CLA or Audi A3. These are may be down on power on paper, but in the real world they are probably just as fast as the Mazda 3 Turbo.
If one wants decent performance and a nice interior, the VW GTI is also cheaper...

With the prior gen CLA, I'd have the Mazda. The new CLA/A is quite nice inside (though I'd give a slight edge to the A, bit more roomy).

As nice i think Mazda is... Unless it is a CTR competitor or Golf R competitors, it has no business in the mid $35k segment.
Now if they tune it and call it a Mazdaspeed 3, then that is a different story.
Even fully loaded up the ass Civics (other than CTR) are still under $30k....

The 2022 Mazda3 gains a new Carbon Edition model to give the vehicle a more stylish appearance. Plus, there's a new exterior color option.
The Mazda3 Carbon Edition gets a Polymetal Gray exterior, which is a shade with a dark blue hue. It rides on 18-inch wheels with a black finish. The heated side mirrors and antenna have a gloss black finish. Inside, there's red leather upholstery.
The Carbon Edition also features a Bose 12-speaker stereo with aluminum speaker grilles and a three-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio. It has features from the Preferred trim level like a power moonroof, a memory function for the side mirrors, and an eight-way power driver seat.
The Carbon Edition exclusively comes with the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox driving the front wheels. The powerplant makes 186 horsepower (139 kilowatts) and 186 pound-feet (252 Newton-meters) of torque.
Prices start at $26,400 (excluding $1,015 destination) for the sedan or $27,400 for the hatchback.
The new paint color option is Platinum Quartz Metallic. It's available on the S Select, S Preferred, S Premium, Turbo, and Turbo Premium Select trim levels. The 2022 Mazda3 announcement doesn't specify if this color adds an extra cost to the vehicle. Motor1.com reached out to Mazda for clarification.
In addition to the 2.5-liter engine, the entry-level powerplant is the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 155 hp (116 kW) and 150 lb-ft (200 Nm) and hooks up to a six-speed automatic driving the front wheels. There's also the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter turbocharged powerplant with 250 hp (186 kW) and 320 lb-ft (434 Nm) that connects to a six-speed automatic and comes with all-wheel drive.
UPDATE:Mazda responded to our question about the new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint color. "Platinum Quartz Metallic is a normal paint option, so there is not an additional charge," a spokesperson told Motor1.com.

Twinned with the CX-30 crossover, the Mazda3 has entered 2024 with a starting price of $24,170 excluding taxes. The destination freight charge is $1,165, bringing the total to $25,335 for the base specification of the four-door sedan.
By comparison, the 2023 model used to retail at $22,550 plus $1,065 back in August 2022. What are you getting for the higher price, though? In the 2.5 S, upgrades include Rear Door Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Blind Sport Monitoring.
Only the Mazda3 Sedan is available in 2.5 S guise. This most basic of trim levels also includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go function, Smart Brake Support, Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning, Driver Attention Alert, and High Beam Control as part of the i-Activesense suite of driver-assist and safety features. Three years of Mazda Connected Services also needs to be mentioned, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to three months or 2GB in trial mode.
Six audio speakers complement an 8.8-inch infotainment display, whose functions are controlled by means of the Commander multi-function knob on the center console. Push-button start, remote keyless entry, USB-C ports, rain-sensing wipers, cloth seats in black, LED exterior lights, a matte-finish grille, as well as 16-inch wheels pretty much seal the deal.
Prospective customers who need all-wheel drive can have it as long as they're fine with the 2.5 S Carbon Edition, the 2.5 Carbon Turbo, or the range-topping 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. The Carbon Turbo is another novelty for 2024, which builds on the Carbon Edition with a few tasteful additions. For starters, the name implies a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder lump rather than the standard free-breathing mill.
Compatible with both regular unleaded and premium fuel, the force-fed engine delivers 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet (434 Nm) on full song as long as you fill up with 93 octane. Switching to 87 octane isn't a biggie at all, with Mazda quoting 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet (420 Nm) of torque.
The Skyactive-Drive six-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ AWD system are standard, as is Zircon Sand Metallic. This version of the Mazda3 also flaunts 18-inch wheels in black, side mirrors in black, terracotta leatherette and red stitching for the interior, and – get this – a larger infotainment display. When mirroring your phone via cordless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the 10.25-inch unit can be controlled via touch. Qi wireless phone charging is standard as well.
Those in the market for a manual-equipped Mazda3 will have to make do with one configuration. The Mazda3 Hatchback 2.5 S Premium, that is, whose Skyactiv-MT is an available item. This grade comes in front-wheel drive if you pick the manual or all-wheel drive if you go for the automatic transmission.
