Maserati: Kubang news **Revealed (page 1)**

Audi may be tapped to build Kubang SUV for Maserati

By LUCA CIFERRI | Automotive News Europe

TURIN -- Audi may build Maserati's new Kubang sport-utility in Germany.

Maserati senior officials confirmed to Automotive News Europe that the Italian company is currently evaluating whether to base the production of the Kubang on Audi's A8 aluminum structure.

Audi would build the Kubang at its aluminum and lightweight construction center in Neckarsulm, Germany.

The Kubang, which was unveiled in January at the Detroit auto show, is a radical development for Maserati, best known for its sporting coupes and GT cars.

The Kubang is named after a Javan wind (taking Maserati back to its tradition of naming cars after trade winds).

In early September, Audi and Maserati signed an agreement to cooperate on technical, distribution and financial service matters.

Maserati knew it would have to subcontract its production of the Kubang. Its refurbished plant in Modena, Italy, is at full capacity with the current product range; the Spyder, the Coupe and the new Quattroporte sports sedan.

The Modena plant has a total capacity of about 10,000 units a year, the same volume the Kubang is expected to generate.

Audi would take over the complete aluminum vehicle manufacturing, receiving various components from Italy including Maserati's 4.2-liter V-8 engine.

Maserati will decide by the end of the year if the Kubang will be built. The 5-door vehicle, which Maserati calls a GT wagon, has a length of 5-meters and four wheel drive.

Maserati said the Kubang could go into production within 30 months of its approval.

Trident cans Kubang 4x4 - - Source: Autocar

Maserati has unexpectedly killed plans to build the Kubang off-roader, unveiled at the Detroit show in January 2003.

A senior Maserati executive told Autocar: ‘The numbers are too big for us. It’s too soon to be building an SUV, we must concentrate on the new Spyder and Coupé. When we have our feet firmly on the ground we will look again at the SUV, but it won’t be the Kubang.’ Maserati had hoped to build 10,000 Kubangs a year.

Maserati considers less expensive models

Maserati considers less expensive models

Italian carmaker Maserati is considering diversifying its lineup with more affordable cars, an SUV, and diesel models, according to WhatCar? magazine. CEO Karl-Heinz Kalbfell said the Kubang Concept shown in 2003 could be introduced as a production model. He also said the company aims to introduce affordable models between 50,000 and £65,000. Maserati also said today it will offer a regular automatic transmission with its Quattroporte sedan in response to complaints over its clutchless-manual gearbox

I like Maserati!

That would be funny if Ferrari, Lotus, and Lamborghini made an SUV. It could be the fastest SUV on the planet.

Lambo used to make offroad vehicles years back. They had the LM002 make it to production, but these vehicles were not made for speed.

Check them out here:

Maserati: SUV news

http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/11/news..._SUV/index.htm

Coming in 2012: Maserati SUV with Ferrari engine

DETROIT (CNNMoney) -- Maserati will get its own SUV model next year, built on the platform of Jeep Grand Cherokee at the Chrysler Group plant in Detroit, the companies announced Tuesday.

Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of both Jeep parent Chrysler Group and Maserati parent Fiat, said the new vehicle will debut in 2012, and that it will contain an engine designed by another Fiat unit, Ferrari.

"It will be a rock and roll engine," he said. It may come in both a V-8 and a V-12 version.

Tuesday's low-key announcement at the Detroit auto show was made during a radio interview with Marchionne and in various briefings with groups of reporters. There was no prepared statement from Chrysler or Fiat, nor was there any artwork of what the vehicle might look like.

Maserati is a high-end sports car line, known for handmade craftsmanship, powerful performance and prices in excess of $100,000.

can some one please explain to me why....
in a time of uncertainty, these manufactures are still coming out with big suvs with big engines?
I mean they're cool and all but a waste?
are they going to be like the LFA and have each one spoken for before they get produced?

Maserati Kubang

Autocar

The Maserati Kubang SUV concept, unveiled today at the Frankfurt motor show, is the company's answer to the success of the Porsche Panamera.

The sleek four-door integrates Maserati's trademark rear haunches into a coupe-esque body with a shallowly raked rear.

Described by Maserati the "the first tangible look at Maserati's future", the Kubang is the firm's first attempt at a sports luxury SUV since the Kubang concept at Detroit in 2003.

(I think it is a mistake of the reporter: Panamera meant Cayenne of course...")
