Lexus performance line
Mean, Green Lexus On Way
hings look set to get highly charged at Toyota. The company intends to enter the performance saloon market with a family of Lexus models that will all feature hybrid technology.
Engineers are currently working on two machines, one of which will be a new version of the flagship LS. However, first to hit the road will be the GS350 GT, which was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show. Expected in August 2005 and aimed at the Mercedes E55 AMG, it will mark Lexus' first anniversary of sales in Japan, and sport a 300bhp 3.5-litre V6 mated to a 170bhp electric motor. Offering an astounding 470bhp, the car will feature all-wheel drive and be capable of around 60mpg.
But if you think that sounds impressive, then just wait another 12 months, when Lexus' ultimate hybrid - the LS500 GT - will appear. Combining a 400bhp 5.0-litre V8 with a 200bhp electric motor, the car will offer at least 600bhp and be targeted at the Mercedes S-Class flagship, the S600L.
Thanks to predicted improvements in battery technology, economy of more than 50mpg is expected - double the standards set by traditional petrol engines of equivalent performance.
But the march to bring eco-friendly performance technology to Lexus models won't stop there. The firm's popular IS will inherit a new flagship when it is replaced in 2006. The IS350 GT will offer a tuned version of the 3.5-litre V6 that will be in the GS. However, it's not clear if it will sport a hybrid powerplant, although it may integrate some of the bigger system's fuel-saving technology, including engine stop and start systems which save fuel in stationary traffic.
For now, the cost of hybrid technology means it's likely to be reserved for Toyota and Lexus' most expensive models. However, at the Geneva Motor Show this month, one Toyota insider told us that the company was committed to hybrid cars, and that ultimately they will be available right across both ranges. Peter Lyon

I find the predicted economy a little hard to believe and we have to wait till 2006 for an IS? The current IS will be selling for 25k by then with all the reabates they'll need to get them off the lot.

What you have to remember is that any hybrid's total advertized HP numbers are not really equivalent, preformance wise, to a similar car in which the HP numbers that are derived from the gas engine alone. So that 470 HP GS350 GT will not have the performance of a similar size/weight car with a 470HP V8 engine in it. Milage, that's another story.
This is the first I heard of a GS350. I guess I should have paid better attention at the Lexus portion of the Geneva show.

The only catch to all of this, is that the electric motors have no gearing and "peaks" are more or less determined by wheel speed rather than the usual rpm.

Lexus is coming out with some awesome cars. The new G class looks absolutely beautiful, it was in need of a major make over. The other classes have stepped up a bit too. I think the Japanese do some of the best Luxury interiors, they're beautiful.

The amazing thing about an electric motor is the TQ it can generate instantly with no need to wait for RPM to get higher. Im wondering whats the TQ numbers are going to be on these two cars.

I seriously doubt autoexpress's numbers on these hybrids. Not impossible, but sound too good to be true. A 100HP less on both sound a bit more realistic and still great. Guess we'll know more around the time of the Tokyo autoshow in October or latest around next Summer when Lexus launches in Japan.

Lexus Looking at Performance Badge - - By Paul A. Eisenstein - - Source: The Car Connection
Lexus is looking at both ends of the powertrain spectrum and along with its fast-growing lineup of hybrid-electric vehicles, the Toyota division may also launch a high-performance brand-within-a-brand, along the lines of the Mercedes-Benz AMG series and Cadillac’s new V series. “It is being seriously studied,” Lexus General Manager Denny Clements told TheCarConnection.com. He quickly added that, “I’m not telling you we’re going to do it,” though Clements stressed that he is “absolutely” in favor of the idea. “We need to have a flagship in every segment, like AMG.” A hint of what might come was offered during the recent Detroit auto show, when Lexus lifted the covers on the LF-A supercar. The 200 mph two-seater is officially being referred to as a concept vehicle, though Clements acknowledged, “We really want to build the car,” which borrows on the know-how Toyota has gained through its efforts on the Formula One racing circuit. If priced around $125,000, the Toyota Group Vice President estimated there’d be a market for as many as 100 a month. The LF-A underscores the effort by Toyota to create more passion around the Lexus brand. “An imperative now is to create more buzz,” said Clements. “It’s not about volume. It’s about image.”
