I hope that with a short, short rear end like this it's a hatchback.... though I'll bet you it's a sedan. Oh gosh, imagine trying to open the trunk with such a narrow opening? What can fit through that narrow, narrow opening?

7/8 scale GS with the same features. If you don't need the size and like to save 10k+ the IS would be a good bet for Lexus afficianados.
We'll have to wait for the price and drive for a real conclusion.

I think it looks pretty good too. Now the REAL question is whether this can undercut a similarly-powered BMW by $10k.
With that list of equipment, I'm starting to wonder about how they are going to be pricing this car. It'd almost be too good to be true if it included all that equipment with a base price just a hair over $30k.

When you think about it, once all the engineering is paid for, all of those features are cheaper to make and put in if its spread over several cars like GS and IS. So the IS buyers benefit from all the features and the GS buyers get stuck paying the higher bill.
Another fine example of lackluster crowdpleasing design strategy from Lexus, but that's more or less what everyone's doing now. I wish they'd do something different like what Acura did with the TL.
I just don't like the triangles in the front bumpers. The headlights turned out to be nothing more than the current LS's headlights stretched and pulled thinner.
Overall, I don't think it's a bad looking car.

hmmm... the price is the one that I really wanna know.
If the price is right for this one, it might sell. Especially with the equipement listed.
Is this a Geneva introduction?
Junkster, who would prefer the IS over the TSX if it was the same price

IF... and big IF, since Toyota is a pretty conservative company in terms of business tactics... they price this the same as a TSX, that means 27,500 for a comparable (maybe a few options not included) IS250, that would drive some other makers pretty nutty...
Think about choosing between the IS, the TSX, the BMW 1 series... with similar price and the options advantage to IS, the BMW 1 series might lose steam before it even gets on the ground here in the states. And that hatchback body ain't gonna turn heads here in the US.
Junkster, who figures a well-equiped IS will be 30k
OMG, i feel like ive done something wrong just by looking at this damn thing. This car is 100% not a lexus, but than again, lexus is 100% not lexus. Look at this damn thing, its back looks like a tsx, the side looks like a scion/mazda 3, the front fenders are 100% 5 series, the front bumber is BMW m series lookingand the headlights are probably from something else, ARGH!!! and why havent they gotten in trouble for this, its very, very obvious.
and now im gonna go turn my self in..........................

looks like somebody here needs some tranquilizer. JK, I agree though, although every car has some influence, Lexus has always been closer to other models of other companies in terms of look. Look at their entire lineup..
The LS looks like an S-Class, the LX looks like a Land Rover, the SC looks like an old SLK. Toyota's JDM interiors resemble MB in many ways, too. It's incredibly obvious.

I'm wondering if it's still as small as the outgoing IS... if it's only marginally bigger, charging 35k would be suicidal.

Not sure about suicide. Look at the a4 and the 3 series.
You'll get lexus quality and service. I dont know......if they are smart and still offer the bigger engine with a stick....I'd look at one if finances were in order.

IS350... yes, 35k might not be so bad...
I was thinking it's still gonna have a 2.5 inline.
A4 offers AWD... 3 series is large compared to others in the entry market, especially with the new 3.
The IS squarly directed towards the European market, so it's gotta bring alot with the bargain price that Europeans expect from Japanese makers. And Lexus needs all the help they can get in their European division...

The next IS - what we know so far (updated 24 Feb 2005).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some information is starting to trickle out on what we can expect regarding the 2nd-generation Lexus IS. Thus far, I see 3 areas of discussion that I'd like to post and, hopefully, get feedback and comments from my fellow Roundtable panelists. First, I'd like to discuss:
EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS:
Starting from the widely-held premise that the Lexus LF-C concept is a preview of the next IS, here's how the exterior dimensions compare between the LF-C and the current IS:
Wheelbase: 110.0 in. (almost 5" longer than the IS)
Length: 178.7 in. (2.1" longer than the IS sedan / 1.7" longer than the SportCross)
Width: 73.0 in. (5.1" wider than the IS)
Height: 53.5 in. (2" lower than the IS sedan / 3.2" lower than the SportCross)
Now, let's compare these numbers to the IS's two strongest rivals in North America, the upcoming 2006 BMW E90 3-Series and the Infiniti G35:
Wheelbase: 110 in. (Roughly midway between the BMW's 108.7" and Infiniti's 112.2")
Length: 178.7 in. (Barely longer than the BMW's 178" sedan, and still shorter than the G35's 182.2" coupe/186.5" sedan)
Width: 73.0 in. (Definitely the widest of the bunch. Both the Infiniti G35 coupe and the new BMW 3-Series are 71.5" wide)
Height: 53.5 in. (A tiny bit lower than the current BMW coupe, and 1.3" lower than the G35 coupe)

Geneva is correct.
