Lexus: IS News

Both N55 and B58 are reliable, at least in my own personal experience... it is the electronics that worry me... But with cars being packed more and more tech.. Soon it will not matter much where the cars come from, they all going to have more issues than 10 or 20 years ago..
It just hit me the other day, as more cars have LED brake light, turn signal and headlights, when they go out, you can't just go to autozone and spend $5 on a bulb anymore
Yes they are supposed to last a long long time, but a lot of times, they don't

I think the bigger part is that many manufacturers actually source their electronics parts from the same place regardless of the model the part ends up in. You just happen to spend more for a BMW branded part than a Toyota branded part even though the part it self is identical. That said, the reliability would be pretty similar.
As far as LED's go, they only burn out due to heat or broken solder joints (or both). If this was going to happen, it would likely happen within the warranty period. If not, you're good for several thousand hours of run time so, provided you're not riding the brakes, you should be fine.

Yeah I would say that BMW engines have traditionally been incredibly solid for the most part. It's everything else around them - electronics and cooling system - that falls apart with mileage.
I have seen my fair share of E36 M3s with 200k+ miles on them

Lexus is making the Black Line Special Edition treatment available again, this time offering it on the F Sport version of the 2019 IS 300 sports sedan.
The package adds 18-inch, split-spoke wheels with the "black vapor chrome" finish that also appear on the flagship LS sedan, plus back side mirrors. Inside, you get black Nuluxe seats with red accents and contrasting red stitching, which also appears on the center console and armrests, plus red accent panels flanking the center stack. There's also a heated, black wood-trimmed steering wheel highlighted by what Lexus says is "distinctive shades of black that were created by a Japanese calligraphy shop dedicated to perfecting ink for more than 200 years." All Black Line versions are equipped with navigation and triple-beam LED headlights.
The Black Line Special Edition will be available on both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions, with choice of three exterior colors: ultra white, obsidian and atomic silver. Rear-wheel-drive versions use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and comes with an eight-speed automatic, while AWD versions are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 260 hp and 236 lb-ft mated to a six-speed automatic.
Lexus earlier this month showed an NX F Sport Black Line edition at the Chicago Auto Show. For the IS 300 F Sport, Lexus will cap Black Line edition production at 900 units for 2019 and make it available in dealerships starting in March. There's no word yet on pricing.

I know they're projectors at least, but do any of the luxury automakers have halogens as standard equipment these days?
IIRC back then, certain entry level models came with halogens standard, with HIDs as an upgrade.

The 13-15 ES models didn't come with HID Headlights unless you opted for the Luxury or Ultra Luxury Package. My parents have a 2014 Premium Package and the projectors are halogens. The discontinued CT came with projector halogens with optional HIDs too.
All 2016+ Lexus have HIDs with optional LEDs based on the equipped package.

Lexus reportedly has no plans to build an IS F for the next generation of the sedan. Scott Thompson, the brand's boss in Australia, told Motoring: "there’s no plans at the moment [to release another one]."
Thompson doesn't provide an explanation for not building an IS F. However, he hints that it comes down to demand for the performance version of the brand's products. He admits that the percentage of F trim models that the company delivers in Australia is “smaller than our [German] competitors," according to Motoring.
The next-gen Lexus IS reportedly arrives in the latter half of 2020, and there are a lot of rumors surrounding its powertrain range. Some speculation suggests the model would get the same BMW B58 3.0-liter inline-six from the Supra where it produces 335 horsepower (250 kilowatts) and 365 pound-feet (495 Newton-meters). However, there's also a report of the IS using Toyota's newly developed inline-six
The other engine options might allegedly include turbocharged 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinders. In addition, some markets would reportedly get a 2.5-liter hybrid powerplant.
The new IS' underpinnings would be a rear-drive version of the TGNA modular platform. The switch reportedly helps slice off around 342 pounds (155 kilograms) compared to the existing sedan
There were previously rumors about a new IS F coming in 2022. It allegedly would have used the LS's 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and 10-speed automatic. Presumably, Lexus' engineers would have tweaked the output to top the 416 hp (310 kW) the mill makes in the brand's flagship sedan.

The Japanese luxury divisions have fallen off a cliff in regards to sedans. Ironically the TLX is the best of the bunch for Japanese luxury sedans in terms of prospects with the new TLX design (including type-s). Currently the South Koreans with the Genesis makes the most compelling sedans as an alternative to the Germans.

I like the Genesis lineup, but those ginormous grilles are a bit much

At the risk of moving this convo further from the main topic of this thread, I'll just add that btwn the TLX and G70, I'd take the latter based on both looks (front grill notwithstanding) and base-level drivetrain layouts (RWD vs FWD). I just think the TLX still has too much front overhang in comparison to the G70. Moreover, the G70 looks more squat and muscular, at least to my eye.
That said, I do wonder if anyone has impressions about the application of Acura's SH-AWD on the TLX vs. Genesis's AWD system in the G70?

Same, I would take the G70 overall as well. Option to have a manual transmission is great too, even though it's not available with the V6 last time I checked.
SH-AWD has true torque vectoring, not brake-vectoring. I think Quattro with a sports diff is likely the closest comparison.

The Japanese Luxury Sedans are about 1 full Generation behind the Germans... from styling, tech and performance... basically everything...
I dont know wtf happened to all of them.. it seems they all suffer from the same diseases.. it is like they stopped trying about 5 years ago...

Acura TLX very competent sedan when you consider all season tires. It is quieter than BMW 5 series.
Easily beat its EPA figures.
i dont know how it is behind in styling.
https://www.motortrend.com/cars/acur...t-test-review/
Still, it managed a commendable 0.92 g of lateral acceleration and a 25.8-second figure-eight time.
The bigger issue, however, was the tires. Acura sells the TLX A-Spec with Michelin Green-X tires that simply didn't offer enough grip to encourage driving the car hard. Swap those out, and the TLX would probably be more fun.

The optional V6 loves to rev and at full throttle it manages to sound like something you'd hear in a much more expensive car. It's no trick to beat 35mpg on the freeway with either one.

You wanna hear what a V6 TLX sounds like? Go drive your V6 TSX.... it sounds the same... actually i dont think your TSX is a V6...so never mind...
A-Spec and GREEN tires should never be mentioned in the same sentence.... unfortunately for Acura, those are actually on the car
I could get 35mpg on the hwy too.. so who cares...

if some thing works. if it is from year 2000. it does not matter. why change.
TLX standard safety feature has superior rating. no need to order complex options to get front collision avoidance.
it is light weight sedan. SH-AWD weighs 3800lbs fully loaded.

Safety is part of integration into body structure with effective collsion avoidance.. There is nothing in TLX that make it 5 years behind that German trio. infact it surpass them once you consider handling performance with all season tires.
Mirrors look like Truck mirrors so far out of body.
oversize steering and all that clutter in car does not make advance in design.

Seriously... That old Auid still wins over that pregnant looking center console. and screen Resolution from window's XP era.
I swear my 01 CLS had the same looking GPS map as the 2020 TLX...

This is not old Audi but 2019 or 2020 year.
I only use screen for backup camera. and very little use of navigation in last miles of street if going to any unknown new destination. there is no statistical evidence that low resolution screen is causing accidents or cannot work.
The wheel tire combo look oversize for the body and always comes out to generate that so called handling. it make the tire worse wear as the suspension becomes older.

Lexus will unveil a new generation of its IS sedan on June 9 and has released a single teaser image to build excitement.
The new sedan will arrive as a 2021 model and that's all Lexus is willing to say right now. The teaser image suggests more expressive styling, at least as far as the taillight graphic is concerned.
Motor Trend reported in May that the redesigned IS is based on an updated version of the rear-wheel-drive platform found in the current IS which arrived for the 2014 model year.
The platform, known as New N, made its debut in the current IS and has reportedly been given a thorough update for the new IS. According to Motor Trend, the platform received various structural and suspension upgrades to enhance its driving characteristics—including a wider rear track.
Most of the development is said to have taken place on the Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama which contains a series of tracks including one designed to simulate the effects of driving on the Nürburgring.Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama in Aichi, Japan
New designs are likely for the exterior and cabin. Look for the exterior to be influenced by the LS, while the interior should take on a much more luxurious look and feel to help the IS fill the void of the soon-to-be-dropped GS.
According to Motor Trend, the current engines will carry over, meaning a base IS 200t with a 241-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, a mid-range IS 300 with a 260-hp 3.5-liter V-6, and a range-topping IS 350 with a 311-hp 3.5-liter V-6.
Sadly, there are still no plans to bring back the high-performance IS F. The current IS never received the F treatment and the same will be true for the next one. All is not lost, however. According to Motor Trend, Lexus is considering filling the void with an IS 500 powered by the 416-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 found in the LS 500. A hybrid option is likely at some point as well.
