Yikes, from this angle, I think the GS's dash looks very plain. Just plastic all around and I can't stand that aluminum trim surrounding the nav screen. I just realized it doesn't have the wood steering wheel of previous GS pics, maybe that's why it looks so barren.

Hope thats a bad angle, otherwise it looks as if it would be hard to see out of the rear window!

If it's the same motor as in the Avalon then it makes 280hp.

Now that you've mentioned it... the rear window does look pretty small... but I'm pretty sure Toyota thought about it already. I doubt their expert engineers would make a mistake that obvious.

If Lexus wants to draw in the tunerish crowd, they'll tune that motor a little (intake/headers maybe) and push it to 300hp so as to tout it around as a high hp car. And Lexus is smart enough to do it, but that might cannibalize on the GS430 sales and raise some insurance issue (not that many GS buyers will care about the latter). Regardless, it'd be really nice to see the base GS produce as much power as the highest powered Acura... it'd be a nice slap in the face for Honda (which deserves it for losing touch with the performance crowd).

but 300x325 out of a 4.3 V8?

they should crank the tuning a little bit...better able to compete/surpass with BMW's 4.4 V8

The black interior looks nice but that grey does not look luxurious at all, I don't see interior color being a problem in either the RL or M-series.

IMO it's the vast expanse of plastic on the dash + the dull grey color. At least in the RL the down market look of the plastic center console is balanced by the metal trim on the center stack. In the GS, the whole dash is just plastic, no matter how high in quality.

Damn Right. I don't see any soul coming out of the GS like I do in the M. I can't wait to check out both cars in person.

vtec took some shots...the badge in the back looks like it says GS 300, so I guess the rumors were true. No 350 for the US.

Lexus Readying Second Hybrid -- By Paul A. Eisenstein - - Source: The Car Connection

Toyota’s luxury arm, Lexus, plans to roll out a second hybrid-electric vehicle with a media preview scheduled during the upcoming New York Auto Show. The GS450h will be the first luxury sedan with a hybrid powertrain, and the first HEV in any form on a rear-wheel-drive platform. Its Big Apple unveiling is scheduled to occur about the same time the first Lexus hybrid, the RX400h crossover, hits showrooms. Company officials are being tightlipped about specific details, but Lexus will start with the new GS430, and mate a version of its Synergy Drive system to the sedan’s already beefy V-8. Where early hybrids, such as Toyota’s breakthrough Prius, focused on delivering maximum mileage, Lexus is taking a different tack. The RX400h will trade off a bit of fuel economy to increase acceleration. And in the GS450h sedan, the emphasis will be on “pure performance,” hinted Lexus General Manager Denny Clements, noting that electric motors deliver maximum torque during initial acceleration. Expect to see the hybrid roll onto the market about a year after the launch of the new, gasoline-powered GS models.

Hmm...maybe Honda should preempt this move by slapping a nice big beefy IMA electric motor on the RLs 3.5L engine...

The ventilated front seats are a steal for that price. Same for the rain sensors and headlamp wipers. Even the rear sunshade sounds worth the money.

What is PCS I wonder?

Bottom line well equipped RWD V6 is 45K and the same for the V8 is 55K. Not bad.

Knee airbags sound necessary to have. Good job Lexus.

Out of Infiniti Acura and Lexus it seems this car is seriously lacking in wood or aluminum accents, takes away from the overall luxury appearance of the interior.

PCS is currently available on the LS430. Taken from the Lexus website:

'No car can predict accidents, but now the LS can react to them the instant before they happen. The Pre-Collision Safety (PCS) System [3] uses radar to detect possible obstacles ahead. Sensors then determine in advance whether a crash is unavoidable. Once an accident is calculated to be inevitable, a computer immediately activates the Pre-Collision seatbelt, which restrains the driver and front passenger, and the Pre-Collision Brake Assist, which applies maximum braking force once the brake pedal is pressed.'

I just wish they would make the AWD in the GS430.

I think it has enough wood accents. IMO, I would've like to see the RL with wood on its center console.

Thanks. PCS.

The reason you dont see a GS430 in AWD trim is price and weight. Same for the M45 and others.

The better question is, why dont the others have it when the E500 has it? The answer is: because the E500 4Matic does not sell well at all. Plus you have the A6 being Quattro and the STS and you got three options already available. There is not much demand for that type of vehicle considering the added cost, complexity and weight. Hence you see the others stay away.

I like the face of the gauges, it looks like something out of a Rolex watch. The rest of the interior looks nice and well executed.

True. I did comment on it looking cheap without wood on the dash, although I like the wood center console with leather wrapped on the sides.

my god, i just want to throw up everytime i see the new gs. it's just big ang bulbous and its styling is horrible. why take cues from the first generation? that thing was ugly and bland. who gives a crap if it was designed by the italians. they should have took cues from the second generation and improved those. too bad they didn't. i'm sure the interior will be typical lexus, with great fit and finish with quality materials.

interior appearance
M > RL > GS
exterior appearance
M/RL > GS
engines
M45 > GS430 > RL > M35 > GS300

I saw a black LS430 on my way to work today. It was a production model complete with the standard equipment of old people inside it. Didn't know it was out.

But then again, this is Malibu.

Lexus learns from BMW example, plans to make more changes, more often to lineup - - By MARK RECHTIN | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek

But Toyota has applied for trademarks for the names "GS 460" and "GS 350," which could indicate midcycle displacement increases.

An actual review, unlike that BS from Edmunds.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp?article=8081

On paper, the GS430 certainly seems to deliver. Thump the throttle, and you’ll watch the speedo needle sweep past 60 in an impressive 5.7 seconds. Top speed is a solid 149 mph.
Not surprising, I think the auto mags give Lexus interiors too much hype. I'm glad someone is bold enough to point out some little details:
Technology aside, those gauge pods weren’t quite as sophisticated looking as we’d have expected, and while the overall interior is incredibly well-apportioned, we were surprised by some small, disappointing details using the sort of cheap black plastic normally found in entry-level automobiles.
And performance for the V6:
For those who don’t need quite that much power, there’s also an all-new, 245-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 in the GS300. It’s still quick, turning 0-60 times of 6.8 seconds.
