Thanks to a WCF reader simply named SW, we now have a picture of what is probably Kia's entrée into the luxury sports sedan segment. Kia's chief designer Peter Schreyer reportedly unveiled this sketch of a car referred to as K9 at a design conference near Seoul last Friday.
Schreyer, best known for designing the original Audi TT when he was still at Audi, is said to have compared the car's design prowess to that of the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Kia's plans do include a luxury sedan codenamed the CH, which is scheduled for launch around 2011 and is the sister car to Hyundai's Genesis sedan (codenamed BH). Contrary to Korean media reports that the K9 is in the same league as the Equus, speculation is that this sketch is actually the smaller CH.
Rumoured engines include a petrol V8 for markets like the US in addition to those already used by the Genesis. It could also sport an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Even a brand like KIA can aspire to make Luxury models benchmarking industry heavy weights like Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series, but Acura can not aspire to be Tier-1. Shows how far behind Honda is in the game.

The long-rumored CH reportedly will be built on a shortened Genesis platform (probably about the same size as the coupe) and thus, will be going up against the 3 Series, G37, etc.

Powering the K9 will be a new high-revving 4.0-liter V-8 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission developed and built by Hyundai and Kia.

Kia: K9 spied
Kia K9 sedan spied, upscale cues include Maserati-style side vents
Remember the proposed Kia K9 luxury sedan? Apparently, it's a reality, as spy shots of the Kia flagship have hit a web forum in Korea. As you can see, the K9's camouflage (which sneakily includes Hyundai Genesis wheels) doesn't obscure a set of Maserati Quattroporte-style fender ports. Just how upmarket is Kia shooting with this? Well, according to the tipster who sent them to us, the K9 is expected to slot into the market space between the Hyundai Genesis and Equus sedans.
If those two are anything to go on, Kia might be on to something. From these photos, it looks like the K9 will not only sport Quttroporte-referencing vents along its fenders, but long, angular headlights and a protruding grille, leaving impressions of the BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XJ - lofty benchmarks, indeed. Thanks for the tip, K7!

for those who don't know kia's KDM names..
K5 = Optima (sonata class)
K7 = Cadenza (name is not confirmed and not out in US.. somewhere in between Azera and Genesis, but closer to Azera)
K9 (somewhere between Genesis and Equus supposedly)

Hyundai/Kia should have just launched their own Lux brand instead of going this route IMO.
Can't speak for NA but in this market its hard enough to get people to pay 30K for a Kia. Good luck at 50.

Kia K9 2013
Netcarshow
Kia revealed the first official photographs of its all-new flagship sedan to be launched during the first half of 2012 in the Korean market. Referred to by its codename "KH" until now, the company also confirmed that the Korean market name will be Kia K9 - while the name for export markets, as well as overseas launch timings, will be revealed later in 2012.
K9 is Kia's first rear-wheel drive sedan. It boasts Kia's "best of the best" design, driving performance and high technology capabilities and is regarded as one of 2012's most eagerly anticipated all-new models in both Korean and overseas markets.
This model's Korean market name, K9, will complete Kia's domestic market "K" series range of passenger cars, whose members also include the front-wheel drive K5 (Optima in overseas markets) and K7 (Cadenza in overseas markets) sedans.
The letter "K" represents not only Kia and the company's home country of Korea, but also refers to the Greek word "Kratos" (meaning powerful, domination and reign) and the English word "Kinetic" (meaning active, dynamic).
The "K" series trio of sedans is a strong statement of Kia's determination to offer consumers the broadest product line-up and establish itself as a major presence in the global automotive industry through ceaseless innovation and technological developments.
The Kia K9's exterior gives solid form to the recently released sketches of the new model, and presents its design concept, "high-tech luxury sedan" image, with futuristic, sophisticated and distinctive charisma.
Kia K9 is the latest continuation of Kia's evolving design DNA, carrying its family-look radiator grille, bold "high-tech luxury car" style LED headlamps, with classic design echoes in its voluminous hood. Viewed from the front, Kia K9 presents an imposing and characterful image.
Furthermore, the sophisticated and bold profile with its simple but strong character line and the innovative and stable rear view with its high-tech LED combination lamps, luxurious chrome garnish and bumper-integrated muffler, completes the parameters for whole new level of luxury car design.
Soon-Nam Lee, Director of the Overseas Marketing Group, said, "K9 is our first rear-wheel drive large sedan, created without compromise in its design, driving performance and new technologies. K9 sets a whole new level of standards and values in the large sedan segment, and its design will be another Kia demonstration of our brand's power to surprise the world."

Very BMW-esque! Nice!
Oh look - a different drive platform coming out of KIA. Imagine...KIA has the balls and ability to produce a RWD vehicle....hmmm
How silly of me to think that a small time company like H/A could produce such a thing.

That looks very good..
So, the story I heard from my friend who works at Hyundai in Korea was that K9 originally was going to cost more than Equus, but Hyundai had to step in and had to downgrade K9 to be lower-scale than Equus.
Regardless, that is very good looking Kia IMO
