Kia: Cee'd Concept News

Kia Cee'd - - By JASON STEIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS - - Source: Autoweek

The Cee'd concept will reveal the look of the new lower-medium car that Kia plans to build at its new 1.1 billion euros plant in Zilina, Slovakia, starting in December.

The concept is a teaser that is a "starting point for a new design DNA for Kia," the carmaker says. It has styling cues from the Sorento medium SUV and Picanto minicar.

The name Cee'd (pronounced seed) represents the car's "seed" for future growth in Europe, a Kia press statement said.

The five-door hatchback concept is powered by a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.

It was styled at Hyundai/Kia's design center in Russelsheim.

The production version will appear at the Paris auto show in September.

Kia will reveal a sporty wagon concept at the Frankfurt auto show intended to preview design elements of the next Cee’d compact and a possible standalone model.

The concept has what Kia calls "extended hot hatchback styling." Kia says the look updates the current three-door Pro-Cee’d version of the Cee’d model, suggesting that Kia might offer a fastback model of its new compact instead of a three-door, just as sister company Hyundai has done with the new i30 compact.

"We don't make concept cars for no good reason," a Kia source told Automotive News Europe. "It's up for very serious consideration as a standalone model."

Kia's sister brand, Hyundai, will also debut in Frankfurt a fastback version of its latest i10 compact car.

The standard version of the new Cee'd hatchback could debut at Geneva auto show in March, the source said.

The current Cee'd was launched in 2012 and is built in Zilina, Slovakia for European sales.

The Frankfurt concept features flush door handles, a rear light bar running the width of the car and sculpted wheel arches that give it a sportier look.

That's a sexy looking profile. Doubt the end product will look like that though with the large wheels and flush door handles.

Acura needs to hire away their designers.

https://www.motor1.com/news/244159/2...ceed-gt-spied/

Fat exhaust tips: check; large wheels: check; sports suspension; check; big vents: check. It's a hot hatch all right.

The apostrophe is gone, but thankfully the “GT” suffix is here to stay. The same day when Kia officially announced a new Ceed GT, our spies caught on camera a prototype undergoing testing on public roads. That was mid-April, and now, almost two months later, another one has been spotted out in the open. Luckily for us, some of the camouflage has been removed to grant a better look at the hot hatch’s racy body.

It’s got all the ingredients you’d want, from the pair of generous exhaust tips and large wheels (18-inch?) to the spoiler lip lurking from underneath the front camo where we can also catch a glimpse of the enlarged air vents. The prototype also sits visibly lower than the regular Ceed and that’s a sign of a stiffer suspension setup to improve handling.

There’s still a thick amount of double-layered disguise applied at the back where we can observe the zipper and the lock making sure the Ceed GT’s derrière remains hidden. Additional camo has been applied onto the doors and the hood, but we’re expecting these body panels to be carried over from the lesser versions of the compact hatchback.

While the previous-generation i30 Turbo has been promoted to an N model with up to 272 horsepower for Hyundai’s latest-gen hatch, the Ceed GT will not be going down the same road. Kia has said the new one will have roughly the same output as its predecessor, so we’re looking at somewhere in the region of 200 horsepower. Don’t hold your breath for a more intense derivative as it won’t happen because Kia has done the projections and has reached the conclusion that there wouldn’t be enough demand for it.

As to when we’ll get to see it without the frustrating camoufalge, our guess is March 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show. Meanwhile, the Ceed family will grow to include a “shooting brake” set to premiere at the beginning of October during the Paris Motor Show. Why the quotes? Because it won't be a true shooting brake because it will retain the regular wagon's rear doors. Essentially, it will be a more stylish take on the already revealed Sportswagon and we definitely won't mind seeing it in GT guise later in its life cycle.
