Jaguar Concept Eight

Jaguar North America Unveils the Concept Eight at the 2004 New York Auto Show

Known for its beautiful concept cars, Jaguar sprung a surprise at the 2004 New York International Automobile Show with the unveiling of the special Concept Eight show car.

Designed to showcase the spacious rear passenger compartment of the new long wheelbase XJ production models, the Concept Eight features a special set of individual rear seats and a host of unique features for discerning rear seat passengers.

Features that set the Concept Eight apart include a long wheelbase aluminum body, Conker nubuck and aniline leather interior, Purple Haze paint finish, a full-length glass roof, 21-inch alloy wheels, and individual rear lounge seating.

The Concept Eight also has machined aluminum body side vents, aluminum tailpipes, seat-back mounted video screens with DVD system, 860-watt Alpine® 8.2 audio system, a cooler box to chill a bottle of Mumm® champagne for the Waterford®-designed Jaguar champagne flutes, and aluminum trim including shift gate and sill plates. It also includes Dunhill® writing pens, address books, and Leica® D-LuxTM digital cameras secured in the front seat head restraints behind the folding video screens.

"The Concept Eight is not about cramming in half an hour's work on the way to and from the airport," said Julian Thomson, Head of Jaguar Advanced Design. "It is a car that exudes British good taste and calmness. It has a very relaxed but contemporary feel about it. Jaguar is not an 'all work and no play' company and the Concept Eight reflects that. When you ride in it you should get the same feeling of well being that you would enjoy if you stayed in a boutique hotel."

Jaguar's 2005 Long Wheelbase XJ

Unveiled at the 2004 New York International Automobile Show and on sale from September, Jaguar is proud to introduce the new 2005 Model Year version of its XJ sedan. Already renowned as one of the most advanced cars on the road today thanks to its aluminum-intensive monocoque rivet-bonded construction, the 2005 XJ adopts a new long wheelbase format for the North American market and a new range line up offering all the luxury, craftsmanship and thrilling driving dynamics expected of the revered British marque.

The 2005 Model Year XJ range will expand from three to five distinct model derivatives with two standard wheelbase models continuing from the 2004 range, launched in 2003. The flagship Super V8 model returns to the XJ line up after two years away offering unique luxury and craftsmanship features combined with the mighty 390 bhp supercharged powertrain - Jaguar's ultimate luxury/performance "stealth" car.

The long wheelbase XJs - XJ8L, Vanden Plas, and Super V8 - use the same unique, highly innovative aluminum alloy monocoque bodyshell construction as the 2004 standard wheelbase XJs. With the longest wheelbase and longest overall length in its class, and with the whole of its additional body length incorporated behind the B pillars, the long wheelbase XJs have unsurpassed rear head room and 4.4 in. more rear knee room than the standard-wheelbase XJ.

"The long wheelbase models add another dimension to the XJ line-up. These vehicles were designed from the outset to be long wheelbase cars, therefore the 'stretch' seems natural in the styling and feel of the car. It's the largest Jaguar ever built, providing customers with unsurpassed cabin space while maintaining high levels of luxury and performance as one would come to expect from a Jaguar." Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars
"Business trays" on Vanden Plas and Super V8 models, large enough to hold a notebook computer, fold down from the front seat backs to maximize comfort and convenience. Longer rear doors create more room for entry and exit. Also in the rear seating area, an available multimedia entertainment system includes a DVD player and twin 6.5-inch display screens incorporated into the front seat headrests. The system's switchpack permits universal connectivity to external devices, including iPod, MP3, etc. The multimedia entertainment system is standard on the flagship Super V8 and optional on other XJ models. Also standard on Super V8 is the otherwise optional 4-zone climate control system with individual rear seat settings. A wider choice of luxurious interior trims, including new leather and trim options, accompany the host of enhancements to the 2005 XJ range.

The long wheelbase XJs continue to offer the choice of powerful, refined and efficient V8 engines, from a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 to the range-topping 390 bhp supercharged 4.2-liter V8 -- both matched to the advanced ZF six-speed automatic transmission. With only a minimal weight increase over the standard wheelbase XJ's body -- just 53 lbs. -- all models have virtually unchanged levels of performance and fuel economy.

I'm glad to see they finally brought the VDP back with an extended wheelbase. I was a little disappointed when I heard that the VDP wasn't going to be bigger than the XJ8/R since it was always one of its more prominent features (this was before its official release). I really loved all the room we had in our '97 and '99 VDPs, even with the front seats back all the way there was still a good amount of room in the rear.

That Concept Eight is HOT...minus the side vents. Those things are real eye-sores, especially on black. What were they thinking?

Very Hot!

A friend of mine recently got a new XJ.. I was never a huge fan of Jaguar, but I was very impressed with this car. Looks beautiful in person and a great interior. I'd definitely get it over the S class or 7 series

My dad used to own the old jaguar xj6 (when they were cheaper). One thing i miss the the smell of jaguar interiors... they have such a unqiue smell. The smell lasts for a long time too, at least did with us.

the new XJ doesn't smell like that anymore...they have a new leather supplier now. I heard the old one went bankrupt.

Connolly ended production in 2002 and basically sold off what hide was leftover.

I also just noticed that Jag took away the chrome around the tail lights, rear windshield, and front windshield....which was on the 04s. Heard they were considering doing that, looks like they did.

actually, all XJs and XKs had Connolly leather interiors except for the VDP which had a Premium Autolux Connolly leather interior. I'm only certain for the '97 to '01 model years because I still have the sales brochures.

EDIT: bah! you edited your post

Yeah, I realized that the XJs did come with Connolly leather....while VDP and Super V8 came with the softer Autolux.

it looks amazing...but i hate that Jag calls the long wheel base XJR the "super V8." that is such a ghey name. Either call it the XJR-L or a fancy name similar to Vanden Plas

it's not a long wheel based XJR...it's a Supercharged Vanden Plas, I know because that's what they called it until and including the 2001 model year. They didn't start calling it the Super V8 until the '02 model year.

Post 2007 Jaguar XJR Portfolio special edition revealed

Press release...

Jaguar has announced a new special edition 400 hp XJR called the XJR Portfolio. This supercharged performance sedan continues the evolution of the design cues first seen on the Concept Eight show car which starred at the New York International Auto Show in 2004. The XKR Portfolio features similar design cues to the the long-wheelbase XJ Super V8 Portfolio, including 20-inch polished wheels, side power vents and Satin American Walnut or aluminum trim. The XJR Portfolio’s interior is upholstered in Ivory, Champagne or Charcoal leather. The XJR Portfolio will be available in a choice of four colors — Liquid Silver, Midnight black, Ebony, and Blue Prism. In-car entertainment is provided by the 12-speaker Jaguar Alpine Premium sound system – including 320 watt amplifier, subwoofers and CD changer.

Love that car, but I would need to replace my entire wardrobe before driving it. I'd look ridiculous behind the wheel wearing what I have now.

Jag has great style.
