I always thought initial quality was a shame, how is it verified? I've brought cars in for warranty work in the past and never received paperwork, I'm sure it was never reported, these results are plus or minus 20% effective at best, which renders them useless.

Acura's Initial Quality? Luke warm

Cosi cosi is really not good enough if they want to be considered something more than they currently are. Lexus, MB, Infiniti; all had 4 stars. Porsche was tops with 5. BMW and Audi had subcategories that were 4 stars. Acura? 3 stars across the board.

Better get cracking guys. People are paying a premium price for something. It better be a premium product with a premium dealer experience. Otherwise, it's just a Honda. My RL was in the shop several times in the first year for annoying things. My dealership looks like a Honda showroom (just quieter).

Before anybody says it; I realize long term reliability is important also. But people don't want to be back to the dealer 3 times in the first 3 months to fix a rattling glove compartment, etc. It negatively affects the "experience" which negatively affects the brand perception which ultimately becomes the brands image.

I'm not a big believer in the "initial quality" surveys either- I mean, Jaguar and Chevrolet are above average??!

Check the 3-year surveys-- I bet Honda and Acura are way up at the top of those surveys along with Infiniti and Lexus, with MB below average and Jag way towards the bottom.

Read an article somewhere this week that Acura's starting to put big pressure on all their dealers to renovate or rebuild with larger/better showrooms. That's part of the equation, but Acura better improve the initial quality a bit and get away from FF drivetrains (09 TSX). Otherwise, they're shoveling shit against the tide trying to improve their status among the topshelf brands.

People, this isn't about "quality" per se, its about "problems per 100 vehicles," says so right under the title of the document. I believe the MINI ranking though. My sister-in-law's 03 Cooper S needed its window regulators replaced 3 times in less than 2 years among other things

Whats really funny is the 2006 ratings

It is kinda hard to believe that almost half of the manufacturers could cut almost half of the problems in a year or 2. Just look at Land Rover in 2006, then 2007, then 2008.

And notice that the average problems per car has dropped significantly across the board- Acura's problems per car have dropped every year, but some other manufacturers improved even more. That's all good for us car nuts and consumers.

I'll still never get a Land Rover, though.

Lets see how these same vehicles are after 3, 5 and 10 years

Initial quality means NOTHING in these surveys anyway.

What counts as a problem? Is 1 engine falling out the same as 1 rattle that the service department technician can't duplicate?

The problem is that Acura = Honda. I know,

But the thing is, Honda competes with Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc. So the standard for that class of cars is much lower. So by comparison, Hondas are better in that department.

Now you take the same Honda, put an Acura badge on it, and then have it compete with Lexus and Audi. It's not going to work. And I doubt Acura's rating will improve now that they keep putting that fake plastic metal shit all over their interiors. Doesn't look good in a Civic, it's not going to fly in an Acura either.

Initial Quality is nice and all but shouldn't the REAL story be what the cars are like, oh I dunno, two years after purchase?

IIRC, the degree of the problem is not quantified. Consumer expectations are also considered in JD Power's surveys: it's a problem if the customer expects a third cupholder in a Porsche 911 and it doesn't have one.

I think these types of reviews are somewhat useful. I highly doubt that cars will get more reliability as time goes on, so maybe this is an early indicator for unreliable cars... not the best, but better than nothing... or worse, going with past perceptions.

The title of these reports is way too misleading.... quality is a highly subjective term, and I think the ratings are based more off of their "problems per 100 vehicles" study.... sooo, that means its a more simple scale (out of 5 stars) of measuring how many problems a car will or won't have.

A Mini with the same interior quality as a Chrysler? Don't tell me you guys buy that.

If I'm right, this is more like a "long term test" study like how some publications own a car for a few months or a year and then give their feedback, except this isn't about the performance, utility, comfort, etc.. its more like what you can expect with regards to potential problems.

MB is not a surprise, after dumping the dead weight (Chrysler). The MB stock shoots straight up and so is the MB vehicle quality.

I'm still annooyed when people jump on the bandwagon and bring up the audi reliability issues when they have improved quite a lot since then. They still have some kinks, but it is much improved.

JD Power also does VDS (vehicle dependability studies) studies , which, IIRC, covers the two previous years of reliability.

Looking at that 2006 report. Does anyone else get the feeling JD Power changed their metrics to get the new lower numbers in 2007 rather than some sort of quantum leap in manufacturing quality?
