"Interior of the Year" Awards - Audi, GM win

Audi, GM Car Interiors Win Awards - - by Joseph Szczesny - - Source: The Car Connection

...

Meanwhile, eight different vehicles, including two from Audi and two from GM, walked away with honors during the sixth annual "Interior of the Year" awards competition. The Audi A4 and the Audi A6 were the media choice for the popular and premium-priced cars. The Honda Odyssey was the media choice for interior of the year in the popular priced truck, and Land Rover LR3 was the media choice in premium-priced truck category.

The 2005 "industry-choice" winners were the Ford Mustang in the popular-priced car category; the Cadillac STS in the premium-priced car category; the HUMMER H3 in the popular-priced truck category; and the Mercedes M-Class in the premium-priced truck category.

See for this to make sense we'd need to know what other vehicles competed and...lost.

GM interior designs aren't necessarily bad, but their choice of material and quality control are extremely lacking.

That said, they're definitely not deserving of an award.

The STS's interior is actually pretty nice, not deserving of an award but nice.

I don't think anyone who goes for a Mustang care much about the interior though.

And the new GT500 Mustang will have the whole upper dash, armrest, door rests etc. covered in leather.

Click on the links for the highs res pics:

This was from the press release from media.ford.com:

Lathered in black leather, even on the dash

The GT500 gives new meaning to the term "leather interior" as the dash, seat borders and door panels are completely wrapped in Black Ebony leather. Also wrapped in ebony leather are the shift lever, shift boot and parking-brake handle.

Shelby Cobra GT500 dash and door panels are wrapped in black leather, accented by red leather seat and door trim.

For visual contrast, the GT500 features satin-aluminum finished trim (rather than traditional chrome) and new "SVT Red" leather seat inserts and door-trim panels provide a marked contrast to the rest of the leather-trimmed cabin, creating a very special driving environment.

So will the STS-V and XLR-V, almost every surface will be covered in leather.

Also, word is that much of the fancy materials in the GT500 concept will not make it to production.

No more or less than other cars out there, like the CLS500 or Eclass......has a big plastic Navigation unit stuck in the dash.

Granted, I think there is a little too much space between the slots in the STS......but in person the interior is nice.

I read it awhile back (can't even remember what I did 2 days ago), the article just stated that chances are the real fancy interior will not carry into production.

Granted, I'm sure there will be highlights over the standard GT....but a leather wrapped upper dash? That would be a first for a $40k muscle car.

Black plastic is ok if done tastefully......FLAT black plastic is cheap! Give it some deatailing with buttons & switches. MB interior is far superior. Cadilliac is not a bad interior. In fact it is probably the best GM has put out in some time, but it is nowhere near Audi, or MB.

Last I checked, the XLR was only around $65k and there was minumum of GM parts bin stuff in it.

I agree, but it wouldn't stop me from buying the STS.......its a great car.

Can't wait for the STS-V, that is going to be some ride.

Yea, but that interior is closer to $100,000, not $80,000. Plus that one has the Nappa Leather interior option ($3,000).

I think the Caddy could have been better when compared to the SL, but it was still done extremely well.

Hmm...after looking at the SL interior again, I remember why I didn't like it much in the first place. It's very "busy". I've always been a fan of minimalist design so the much cleaner, simpler look of the XLR just appeals better to my sense of aestheicism.

I take it that you are a big fan of the current BMW minimalist interiors. I myself like a more intricate interior, but I do appreciate the minimalist look if done tastefully. There is a fine line between minimalist and cheap....the XLR is walking that fine line for a car around 80k.

The STS won over the RL? No way.

How is the A4 a "popular-priced" car?

Finally, what's up with mixing pickups with SUVs? Terrible reporting in my opinion.
