Honda: S660 News

The Honda S660 Concept is headed to the Tokyo Motor Show - and is supposed to be a smaller version of the S2000.

Specs supposedly are 1900 lbs, mid-engine, RWD, 67hp from a 660cc petrol engine (no hybrid or electric here) but a CVT transmission (no 6-speed?).

According to the article however the car may be headed to other continents with a larger engine, and Honda may have 2 additional sporty cars planned for a total of 3 mid-engined sports cars with the potential of a FR-S fighter.

Agree - I don't think this will have me selling my S2000 - but I think its a positive to see Honda building a mid-engine RWD car and if the rumor is true that they'll build another car to be a FR-S fighter - that would hopefully be a true S2000 replacement.

The article mentioned three mid-engined models. NSX, S660, ???

That would be very interesting. As it stands though, 67 hp through a CVT is going to disappoint pretty much everyone, at least on paper. If it really will be turbocharged, around 100-110 hp should be more than enough for that weight.

If Honda does with turbocharging for the S2000 replacement, then I can't wait to see what it will be like.

To my eyes, a car like that shouldn't have that big of a grille.

Nice IF true.

I doubt Honda would bring the 67hp version oversea. It would be a waste of effort in doing so. I agree with Costco that ~100hp with 1900lb and 6MT/DCT would be quite nice if the price is kept below USD$20k. Any higher than that and there will be tense competition.

They gotta keep the price low. As with any new car, you have to be compete not only against other new cars in the category, but used cars that at least approximate the category.

Seeing as there aren't plenty of 67 hp or even 100 hp roadsters, I think this competes with older miatas on some level, which are pretty easy and cheap to find.

I don't think it looks bad, I've seen a lot worse.

To me it looks a little square, almost like it could be squashed a bit.

IMO Honda's design team needs to step their game up. The car looks about as ugly as the MR-2 when Toyota redesigned it after the '92 model. It seems like lately all their concept cars resemble the CRZ in some way, shape, or form. And with cars like the FR-S to compete against, they'll be left behind if they keep designing cars that look this crappy. C'mon Honda....nobody in the US is gonna buy this garbage. Especially with 67 hp...

I swear to god no one bothers to actually read up on Honda products before they just blindly bash them on this forum anymore, especially in Automotive News and Car Talk. It's been said once already, but I'll say it again, it has 67 HP and a CVT because those are the requirements for being classified as a Kei-car in Japan, which is what this was designed to be. It's also said in the actual articles linked about this car that if Honda exports it, a bigger engine will be added for markets like the US and EU.

Personally, I kinda like this thing and the way it's styled. I also think the CR-Z looks good, but just has a poor powertrain that holds it back in the worst way.

The bigger news than this car is the fact that Honda has 3 sports models in the pipe, this, the NSX and an FR-S fighter (the name S1000 was thrown around). They seem to be waking up to the fact that they need sporty models, even if they aren't necessarily high volume.

If it's going to be 1900 lbs, that's considered fat for a kei car, considering it's a 2-seater soft-top convertible.

A smaller S2000?!?!? Why smaller?

The S2000 looks 100x's better than this.

...and yeah, 67 bhp is never coming stateside.

Post To Enter Production

Remember, Honda hates you.

From here: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...orbidden-fruit

Rejoice or mourn, depending on your take: the mid-engine Honda S660 sports car will be built, according to a new report. But it probably won't be heading to the U.S.

With the exit of the S2000 from Honda's range in 2009, there have been no true sports cars from the brand--the closest offering being the Civic Si. But the S660 certainly fills the sports car bill, packing a mid-mounted, turbocharged 660-cc three-cylinder engine rated at a meagre but adequate 64 horsepower.

How is 64 horsepower adequate? Because the S660 is pint-sized. Kei-sized, actually, designed to fit just about anywhere in the increasingly crowded realm of Japan. It also weighs less than 2,000 pounds.

The car will be produced on contract at Yachiyo Industry's Yokkaichi plant starting next year, reports Response.jp via Autoblog.

Despite the tiny dimensions and small engine output, we just can't help but think a mid-engined, rear-drive sports car from Honda is precisely what the doctorordered for the brand's long-abandoned fans. Sure, there's always the Acura NSX, but price--and the question of when it will finally be ready for production--rule it out for many.

At least Honda is still consistent with what they have been doing for many years now: providing reliable appliances with wheels for human transportation.

Remember way back when Honda was building sporty driving machines?

It's not coming to the US. When was the last time a Kei-car was sold here in big numbers?

This is like complaining about the Tata Nano. None of you were going to buy it, let alone see it stateside anyway.

Just a bunch of whining and postulating because it's a Honda and has an "S" prefix to its name

That's like a grandpa's story. Where...you put your little guy on your lap...look upwards thoughtfully, puff some smoke from your pipe...and tell him of the days when Honda actually made COOL cars.

It was a mythical time...when Honda actually pissed off Ferrari...when they made cars people bought posters of to hang up in their rooms.

Exclamation Production Form

Honda's journey for a Beat replacement that started with the all-electric 2011 EV-STER Concept and continued with the more realistic 2013 S660 study, is ending with the production S660.

As evidenced by these photos shot at a Japanese port, Honda is ready to ship the production 2015 S660 to dealers across the country.

The sporty, pint-sized roadster is very close to the 2013 concept of the same name, with only a few modest exterior modifications such as the headlamp and tail light clusters, the grille, the smaller wheels, and if we're not mistaken, the less heavily sculpted door lines.

Honda also toned down the interior design a few notches removing the futuristic steering wheel, seat designs and the smaller touchscreens.

The 3.4-meter (134 in.) long S660 revives the spirit of the mid-engine Beat roadster, employing a 660cc (0.66-liter) 3-cylinder turbocharged engine with around 63-horses positioned behind the driver, paired to either a CVT, or as you can see in the photos, a 6-speed manual turning the rear wheels.

There have been rumors floating around of an export version named S1000 fitted with a –you guessed it- 1,000cc or 1.0-liter turbocharged engines featuring a slightly wider body and bigger wheels and possibly around 100 or more horses, but we wouldn't get our hopes up for a North American landing any time soon.

Dear Honda,
What we want is the second coming of the S2000 that's got ~275hp and revs really high but incorporates some more modern technology.
Sincerely,
Global Enthusiasts

Dear Global Enthusiasts,
Here's a fugly 63hp three cylinder car that revs to 7k rpm. It's got some modern technology and you'll have all the time in the world to use it because it will take forever to get up to speed.
Fvck you all,
Honda

there is NOTHING attractive about that car. Just when I thought Honda was getting their shit together... they come out with a 67hp, slow as hell, ugly piece of shit. Wow.

For comparison- my 1999 Civic SiR weighed 2600lbs and the engine was rated at 160hp/111lbft. And it was balls to the wall slow. Seriously, there isn't much on the roads that couldn't beat this thing.

Granted, the s660 is about 700 pounds lighter... but it also has about 100hp less. Who knows about torque for now...
